Summary

For her sixth birthday, animal-loving Alicia is given her first pet, a guinea pig she names Annie. But while Alicia is making a vegetable-fruit cake for Annie's birthday, Annie disappears. Where is she? Alicia can hear her younger brother and sister – the dynamic duo, Jackson and Jillian – arguing in the bathroom. AND, she hears squeaking. Will Alicia be able to avert a near-disaster and make sure Annie stays safe? "Alicia and Annie" is written for read-aloud and for early readers. A healthy recipe, and interactive questions to promote memory recall and emotional intelligence are included. ABOUT THE THREE BOOK SERIES: I was in my classroom when a student asked, “I wonder what my sister is doing right now?” The student’s question made me think about a child’s emerging concept of time: that of being aware of life happening elsewhere, outside of the child’s own experience. Each book in the Sapphire Family Series is told from a different point of view: that of the twins, in "Jackson and Jillian," their older sister, Alicia in "Alicia and Annie," and big brother, Mason in "Mason and Invincible Igor." All three books take place during the same period of time, early evening. Although the books can stand alone, read together they offer a three-dimensional exploration of sibling interactions and family dynamics. Reading a story from different points of view is a first step in thinking beyond oneself. My intention is that the Sapphire Family Series will offer children compelling characters with whom they can identify and grow, and present positive, realistic family dynamics that will delight them.

Stop, You're Killing Me! by Darius John Granger - As a private eye I get a lot of screwballcases, but nothing to match my own; my wife and kid trying to kill me—and neither aware of it!
It's funny how a silly little habit can save your life.
I got into the car that morning and was thinking of nothing in particular—except maybe the cases I hoped to be getting downtown in my one man private dick office. We live at the top of the city's highest hill, my wife and our son Sam, who's seventeen, and myself. At least it's the highest hill in the residential district and the highest one I know of. So out of habit I patted the brakes to test them as the car began to roll down the slight incline of the driveway.
    The brakes didn't hold.
Had I started down Jackson Hill, down the long half mile slope which levels off at the busy intersection of MacArthur and Houston Avenues, I'd have streaked through the intersection out of control. I don't know what the odds for survival are in such a circumstance, but I'd hate to have to test them.
As it was, I shook my head in surprise and pulled the handbrake, bringing the Olds to a stop at the foot of the driveway. I climbed out and bent down to take a look at the right front wheel. In a few seconds I knew what the trouble was. Brake fluid. There wasn't any. But that didn't make sense because I'd had the car—brakes included—overhauled only last week.
Which meant someone had drained the brake fluid from the Olds.
I checked the other front wheel and it was the same. No brake fluid. I sat there in the car for a few minutes smoking a cigarette before I went into the house to call the local service station and have them tow the Olds in.
It was the third time in less than a month that someone had tried to kill me.

Jake and Tom's maternal great-grandfather dies suddenly. Their mom immediately travels out of state to help make arrangements for the funeral. Jake, Tom, and their father are to follow in two days when their dad can take off from work, and stay for a few days. This, of course, creates a problem for Tom ( who, as we know, is a Controller and needs to get to a Kandrona every three days.)Tom resists. But his father insists. They're going, and they're staying for at least three days. No arguments. Jake, too, for his own reasons, would rather not go, but he's much more interested in the fact that Tom is in a bind. How should he play it? What should he do? Jake is so worried about whether he should hope Tom's Yeerk starves to death, possibly forcing the Yeerks to kill Tom, that he completely misses the other possibility. When Jake gets home the next evening, he finds a note from his dad crumpled in the trash. It had obviously been stuck to the refrigerator; someone had snatched it off, and thrown it out hurriedly. Their father says he's going with Tom to a meeting of The Sharing. Tom had used obligations to The Sharing as his excuse for not wanting to attend the funeral. Jake figures out that Tom must have convinced their father to offer an in-person excuse to his superiors at The Sharing.Jake is in a panic. The note doesn't say where the meeting is. Or when it starts. But Jake is sure of one thing: Tom is going to force their father into involunatry infestation. It's Tom's escape from the bind he's in. For once, Jake's quick-thinking tactical mind freezes up. How is he going to save his dad without exposing himself, the other Animorphs, and Ax to the Yeerks...?
