Summary

"Thalaba the Destroyer" is a remarkable narrative poem published in 1801, showcasing Robert Southey's mastery of the romantic literary style that integrates myth, adventure, and moral exploration. Set in a fantastical landscape, the poem follows Thalaba, a young hero on a quest to thwart the evil wizard, after the tragic death of his wife. Southey's intricate use of meter and rhyme complements the poem'Äôs vivid imagery and rich symbolism, encapsulating the turbulent spirit of the Romantic era, where individualism and the sublime often intersect with themes of nature and the supernatural. The seamless blend of Eastern mystique and Western narrative tradition illustrates Southey's ambition to forge a new poetic identity, making a profound statement on the struggle between good and evil. Robert Southey, one of the Lake Poets alongside Wordsworth and Coleridge, was deeply influenced by his historical and cultural context. His extensive travels and interest in folklore and mythology significantly shaped his vision for "Thalaba the Destroyer." Southey'Äôs commitment to social justice, reflected in his political writings, also informs the moral undertones of the poem, creating a compelling narrative that challenges conventional heroism and celebrates resilience in the face of adversity. Readers drawn to richly layered poetry and those fascinated by the interplay of myth and morality will find "Thalaba the Destroyer" an indispensable addition to their literary repertoire. Southey's innovative narrative invites contemplation and provides a window into the complexities of human existence, making it a timeless piece of literature that resonates with contemporary themes.

A small asteroid has hit the capital city. Thousands have been displaced. And in a town far away, a young man called Vin is finding it hard to talk. The only person who seems to notice is Rach, who resolves to find out what's troubling him and help him find his voice again.
But when Rach's family take in an articulate and charismatic survivor of the asteroid incident, Vin's silence is no longer her first priority. How does it feel when the suffering of others seems more legitimate than our own?
James Fritz's Lava is a timely play about grief and the power of expression, rocking with raw emotion and sharp humour. It premiered at Nottingham Playhouse in 2018, in a co-production with Fifth Word who commissioned the play. It was revived on tour in 2022, including a run at Soho Theatre, London.
'Compassionate, warm and funny... Fritz's work pairs structural playfulness with emotional intelligence and inky wit... his plays are contained and compassionate, and frequently find reservoirs of humour in places you wouldn't expect' - The Stage

"This book has shaped this piece of text [ITSELF] already—by neighbouring it (& in my mind) co-opted it, made it something other than an essay—part of SWANSEA culture—We obey these local rules slavishly—and fail to exploit them—[NOT SURE WHAT I'M ON ABOUT HERE]"Authorial violence: Swansea Automatic was published 10 years ago, around the last year of the snake to 0 acclaim except for by those who read it of course. I even did a little residency, which was more like squatting ina little shop on the High Street, Swansea but as time has passed, I came to consider this one of my few, if not only book that can boast the synthesis of my extreme late modernist tendencies and some attempt to fit into the aesthetic of popular fiction. nonetheless it doesn't pull too many punches, it's comedy, it's poetry, it's deconstructed pros,e even philosophy, textual analysis, cynghanedd, and more.Spinning Around the dirty first person narrative is the self-referential Vonegut and recycled psychogeographic of the Fiery Elephant of Johnson, Brooke-Rose, and Sinclair. An attempt to exercise the Demon of Swansea from my formative years. But actually set in North Wales just as much. Swansea is a dream city that could just as easily be London, Glasgow, Belfast, Lublin or Cairo...A second bite the cherry: a second edition is occurring, along with the audiobook and kindle edition and the album (movie!), hopefully generatinga hammer blow on the collective unconscious of our post-media universe. Swansea Automatic justifies itself to me because 2015 was also the very last gasp of the fin de siècle of the apocalyptic contemporary, where the post beats, post flaneur metanarratives where still just about alive. It's rare for me to look back, but I had an idea this one could be a cult book somehow. Help it become so and consume as such, cultishly.
