Summary

Our 80th issue has some great tales for you, starting with an original mystery by Hugh Lessit (thanks to Acquiring Editor Michael Bracken) and a great reprint by Jim Thomsen (thanks to Acquiring Editor Barb Goffman). Plus we have a pair of detective novels, the first featuring New York-based private investigator Nick Carter, and the second another original Hardy Boys mystery. If you read the later editions, you will be shocked to find how much was changed from the originals. These are not the watered-down Hardy Boys most of us read as kids. Give it a read.

On the science fiction and fantasy side, we have a Frostflower & Thorn tale by Phyllis Ann Karr, as she brings her famous duo to a world created by M. Coleman Easton...in collaboration with Easton. Great fun. Plus classic SF by Mike Curry, Robert Silverberg, Robert F. Young, and Murray Leinster.

   Here’s this issue’s complete lineup:

Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure:

“The Shade Tree Mechanic” by Hugh Lessig [Michael Bracken Presents short story]“Clear as Glass” by Hal Charles [Solve-It-Yourself Mystery]“The Ride Home,” by Jim Thomsen [Barb Goffman Presents short story]The Little Glass Vial, by Nicholas Carter [novel]The Tower Treasure, by Franklin W. Dixon

Every lock has a key, every riddle an answer.

Jack's always been about finding the answer, the key, to everything, but his riddles and locks were always larger than the people in his life suspected. What holds everything together? How could the ancients' understanding of the elements connect to our modern understanding?

If Jack understood that, would it mean he could control them?

But answers come with consequences, and knowledge always has a price.

Jack's thirst for knowledge and his will to succeed no matter the danger leads him to discover that truth. When he makes his greatest revelation, his lab is burned to the ground and he finds himself at the sharp end of a very dangerous situation.

With the presumption he is no longer among the living giving him some breathing room, Jack must do the only thing he knows how. He must search for the answers.

What will finding those answers cost him? How far is he willing to go to get them?

Life's a game. At least it is for everyone stranded in Viridian Gate Online, the only RPG where you can swap the apocalypse for an avatar and a fist full of magic . . .

Jack Mitchell knows he won't survive the impact of the massive asteroid hurtling towards Earth. He's not one of the handful of lucky lottery winners scheduled for rescue. But he did luck into a NexGenVR capsule, which means Jack can risk a one-way trip to the world of Viridan Gate Online (V.G.O.), an ultra-immersive fantasy role-playing game. Taking that leap of faith, though, means permanently trapping his mind in the game and killing his body in the process.

Worse, one in six die during the transition, and even if Jack beats the odds, he'll still have to navigate a world filled with vicious monsters, domineering AIs, and cutthroat players. And when Jack stumbles upon a secret conspiracy to sell off virtual real estate to the ultrawealthy—transforming V.G.O. into a new feudal dark age—the deadly creatures inhabiting Viridian Gate's expansive dungeons will be the least of his concerns.

If Jack can't game the system, he's going to be trading in a quick death for a long, brutal one. Oh well, at least he gets a dragon . . .
