The first biography of George Washington's extraordinary nephew, who inherited Mount Vernon and was Chief Justice John Marshall's right-hand man on the Supreme Court for nearly thirty years.

In Washington's Heir, Gerard N. Magliocca gives us the first published biography of Bushrod Washington, one of the most underrated Founding Fathers. Born in 1762, Justice Washington fought in the Revolutionary War, served in Virginia's ratifying convention for the Constitution, and was Chief Justice John Marshall's partner in establishing the authority of the Supreme Court. Though he could only see from one eye, Justice Washington wrote many landmark decisions defining the fundamental rights of citizens and the structure of the Constitution, including Corfield v. Coryell—an influential source for the Congress that proposed the Fourteenth Amendment. As George Washington's personal heir, Bushrod inherited both Mount Vernon and the family legacy of owning other people, one of whom was almost certainly his half-brother or nephew. Yet Justice Washington alone among the Founders was criticized by journalists for selling enslaved people and, in turn, issued a public defense of his actions that laid bare the hypocrisy and cruelty of slavery.

Timeless words of wisdom from the eighteenth-century teacher who transformed the world of education with his groundbreaking ideas.    Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi rose to prominence during the Age of Enlightenment, bringing the spirit of equal opportunity and respect for human personality into the classroom, just as Thomas Jefferson imbued such virtues into the Declaration of Independence. The foundation of Pestalozzi’s educational philosophy rested on six principles: the inner dignity of the individual; the promise of potential in each child; love as the basis of education (as opposed to punishment); his doctrine of Anschauung, experience-based learning; appropriate action following Anschauung, and an emphasis on repetition of said action.   This philosophical grounding influenced the great remaking of American education from 1830 to 1860, resulting in changes that have been felt through the centuries and remain relevant today. The Education of Man gathers Pestalozzi’s enduring thoughts on subjects as wide-ranging as humanity, teaching, poverty, justice, truth, and nature, including such observations as . . .  People are led by custom and catchwords, but facts they are wont to overlook.  The man who seeks to rule as a father before he has learned to love as a brother will never be a patriarch.  Sooner or later, but of a certainty in the end, Nature will take her toll for what men do against her.  Learning is not worth a penny when courage and joy are lost along the way.  The world grows poor in seeking to avoid poverty; the man who strives for riches most earnestly is seen to be the poorest.

Embark on an exciting journey to the past to meet the Anglo-Saxons!
The Anglo-Saxons were people from Northern Germany who came to Britain in waves and quickly established their own kingdoms between the time of the Romans and the Normans. At first glance, it may seem like the Anglo-Saxons did not contribute much to British history. They didn’t even have a writing system until Christian missionaries arrived!
So, why are the Anglo-Saxons so important to British history? Some people may think of this time as a dark time full of feuding kings. Although there were a lot of kings and plenty of fighting, the Anglo-Saxons also laid the foundation for modern English society. They created the structure needed to form one country out of different tribes. When the Normans took over in 1066, they built on top of Anglo-Saxon social and political structures.
For years, people have focused on leaders like King Alfred the Great or events like the Norman Conquest. But the Anglo-Saxons were more than just a few leaders or events. They structured a nation that would go on to conquer vast swaths of the modern world, and their ingenuity still structures life as we know it today.
It’s time to sail back into history and learn about the many facets of the Anglo-Saxons. In this new and captivating history audiobook, you’ll learn what made the Anglo-Saxons special and how they still shape our lives today.
Here are some of the questions you will uncover in this audiobook:
    Was King Arthur real?
    What made Wessex so special?
Which Germanic tribes came to Britain as the Anglo-Saxons?
    Who was St. Augustine?
Where did the Normans come from?
Who was the first King of England?
Why did William the Conqueror come to England?
What is the difference between modern and Old English?
