Summary

The English Poet Laureate from 1913 to 1930, Robert Bridges produced verse noted for its restraint, purity, precision and delicacy, yet strength of expression. It represents a distinct theory of prosody and his devout faith underpinned much of his work. Although he published several long poems and poetic dramas, his reputation rests upon the lyrics collected in ‘Shorter Poems’, while ‘New Verse’ features experiments using a metre based on syllables rather than accents. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of literature’s finest poets, with superior formatting. This volume presents Bridges’ complete poetical works (except for one poem), with related illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1)

Award-winning author Verlyn Flieger takes readers through a series of insightful short stories exploring tragic aspects of human nature. A few of the tales are dark, others a bit lighter, but all celebrate the creativity of storytelling. The second part of the book is a collection of new poetry unearthing the wonders of language, the mundane, and grief and mourning as part of life—the dark spot within the light. Death is the inevitable, inescapable result of mortality, and grief is the price the living pay for that condition. Readers are invited to join in the journey, take some comfort in the knowledge of shared darkness, and know that even within the dark moments, there is always at least a speck of splintered light.

Is it really a woman of your superiority who speaks of the proprieties of society? Are not women like you above all that? Was I to come delicately and hypocritically to offer your husband the sum he stood in need of? That is a course that would have been unworthy of him, of me, and of you. No, you know it well, the proprieties and dignity are nothing any longer, when passion or necessity predominates. William Blake's highly personal messages of humanity and social conscience are as relevant today as in 18th-century London. Although Blake's works were ignored or dismissed until long after his death, their directness and unsentimental simplicity will strike a chord with many today.
