Sinopsis

We live in a remarkable world: science and technology has shifted our understanding of what's possible and transformed our lives. Rain dances and sun worshipping have been replaced by quantum computers, speed-of-light rockets, and our ever-closer inching towards genuine artificial intelligence.
But somehow, more and more of us are feeling hopeless; we are still ruled by political systems that haven't hugely changed since they fell into place hundreds, arguably thousands, of years ago. The part of our society that makes decisions on everything from our health to our work is almost completely dysfunctional.
Politicians aren't held to account by truth, aren't striving for shared visions of human thriving, and are allowed to mix and mash their policies based upon sound bites and media furores rather than actually progressing humankind. All the while having to focus on short-term goals rather than sustainable ideas.
How Moral Philosophy Broke Politics argues that a rational, evidence-based framework for ethics can be developed, by drawing all of our moral opinions back to three basic principles that underlie all of our concerns. By doing this we can rationally judge and weigh new policies and decisions in a way which is accountable and, whilst still debatable, much easier to find consensus on.
If we were to accept this new framework then we would be much better off not just in politics, but in all those areas of life which politics affects. The world has changed unrecognisably in the last thousand years, whilst politics hasn't changed much at all. We need to start using reason to develop it into something useful.

'Pentridge was a place of murder and mayhem. A bluestone hell. The worst prison Australia has ever seen.' Andrew Kirby, former inmate

Welcome to Pentridge, Australia's most infamous prison.
In the long-awaited return to his bestselling true crime series on life behind bars, James Phelps has finally turned his attention to HM Prison Pentridge - the bluestone behemoth that was home to Victoria's worst criminals for more than a century.
Beginning with a gang of guards and a handful of convicts, for more than 145 years Pentridge housed a who's who of Australian criminals and Melbourne's underworld including Ned Kelly and Mark 'Chopper' Read.
From solving the mystery of Ned Kelly's missing skull to the shocking truth about who really cut off Chopper's ears - Australia's Most Infamous Jail includes true and uncensored accounts of inmates (including a convicted serial killer, a mass murderer and the real Romper Stomper), guards, archaeologists and even a former governor-general. This is gritty, true crime storytelling, on steroids - about what life was really like behind the bluestone walls of Pentridge.

A technological, strategic, and tactical history of ancient naval ships from Alexander to the battle of Actium.

The period covered in this book is well known for its epic battles and grand campaigns of territorial conquest, but Hellenistic monarchies, Carthaginians, and the rapacious Roman Republic were scarcely less active at sea. Huge resources were poured into maintaining fleets not only as symbols of prestige but as means of projecting real military power across the Mediterranean arena.

Taking the period between Alexander the Great's conquests and the Battle of Actium, John Grainger analyzes the developments in naval technology and tactics, the uses and limitations of sea power and the differing strategies of the various powers. He shows, for example, how the Rhodians and the Romans eschewed the ever-larger monster galleys favored by most Hellenistic monarchs in favor of smaller vessels. This is a fascinating study of a neglected aspect of ancient warfare.

The traditional view of leadership has often focused on authority and power, but in the modern world, leadership is about influence, empathy, and vision. It’s about guiding others through uncertainty and inspiring change through action. The leaders we need are those who can adapt to new circumstances, challenge the status quo, and unite others in pursuit of a common goal. To nurture these qualities in young people, we must first understand what leadership truly entails in today’s world.
Parents and mentors are the primary sources of influence for the next generation. They hold the responsibility of laying the foundation for young minds to grow into strong, confident, and ethical leaders. While natural talent and charisma certainly play a role in leadership, the development of leadership qualities is largely a result of intentional guidance and opportunities for growth. From a young age, children must be exposed to values such as integrity, responsibility, and empathy, which are at the heart of effective leadership.
Leadership is not something that can be taught in a classroom alone; it is cultivated through experiences, challenges, and real-world application. Encouraging children to take initiative, make decisions, and face obstacles head-on provides them with the tools they need to become self-assured leaders. It’s also essential that they learn how to inspire and uplift those around them, as true leadership is about empowering others to succeed.

We broke our new series on learning Thai down into different learning stages. Start with the "Lower Beginner" books followed by the "Beginner" and "Upper Beginner" books. Next, progress to the "Intermediate" series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the "Conversations" series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Thai.
In Unit 1 you will hear Thai decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Thai speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Thai. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Thai at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Thai, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.
In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.
