Summary

This book explores the concept of S-Risks, or suffering risks, and delves into their significance, distinguishing them from conspiracy theories and alarmism. It categorizes S-Risks into agential, natural, and incidental types, discussing the disjunctive nature and various factors influencing them. Examining technological progress, the existence of powerful agents, and unintended consequences, the book addresses societal values, ethical considerations, and specific risks like COVID-19, gain-of-function research, computer hacking, and social media impact. It thoroughly covers AI-related S-Risks, existential risks, misincentives, goal misalignment, adversarial AI, autonomous weapons, economic disruptions, surveillance, and privacy concerns. Additionally, it explores S-Risks associated with climate change, energy, activism, natural disasters, biological engineering, quantum technological outcomes, cosmic phenomena, social and economic experiments, cultural or memetic risks, and global consciousness networks. The book concludes by proposing a classification system for S-Risks and grouping S-Risk profiles.

The first edition of the 'small ADHD consultation', published in 2014, was originally created to provide my patients with a quick overview of the broad field of ADHD symptoms in adults as summarised as possible. It was important to me to integrate accompanying disorders and therapeutic options such as medication and coaching strategies. It is not uncommon for the underlying ADHD symptoms to be masked by disorders that develop later (such as obsessive thinking, anxiety, panic attacks and addictions). Only abnormalities in childhood, such as dreaminess or motor restlessness with impulsiveness, allow conclusions to be drawn. Patients and friends were kind enough to embellish this book with their contributions, sketches, pictures and poems. The significantly expanded 3rd edition of the 'Little ADHD Consultation' is due to the increased needs and demands of my patients and the new findings concerning ADHD. New topics such as neurofeedback, medication overview, neurobiological aspects and autistic accompanying phenomena as well as legal aspects and cannabis medication have been included. I wish you many A-HA experiences with this expansion.

The time for effective change is shrinking.
In this book, writer, researcher and advocate Gerry Gillespie outlines how we can create a global solution, and it starts between our ears. In order to restore our world ecosystems and our vital soils, he wants to change how we think about our trash. Readers will learn why we all need to change our mind about waste management systems, how to reconnect our organic waste to local soil and food growers, and why this leads to more local jobs.
With chapters about source separation, soil management and climate change, and practical approaches to zero waste, Gillespie presents a practical, logical argument for one way to save the world and grow a local economy. In economic and environmental terms, clearly explains how, if waste were collected as source-separated products, more than half of it could be returned to soils as quality compost and biological products. A very large percentage of the remainder can be put back through recycling, re-manufacturing and reusing. And it’s not just theoretical. Gillespie details how this reduction of waste is already being achieved in parts of the world and how we could do it globally … if we could only think differently.
Advocates, nonprofit directors, waste managers, landfill directors, environmentalists, entrepreneurs, eco-farmers and anyone searching for environmental solutions and opportunities with source separation should not only read this book … we must figure out how to change our thinking, and put Gillespie’s plan into action.

When the tech platforms promised a future of "connection," they were lying. They said their "walled gardens" would keep us safe, but those were prison walls.
The platforms locked us into their systems and made us easy pickings, ripe for extaction. Twitter, Facebook and other Big Tech platforms hard to leave by design. They hold hostage the people we love, the communities that matter to us, the audiences and customers we rely on. The impossibility of staying connected to these people after you delete your account has nothing to do with technological limitations: it's a business strategy in service to commodifying your personal life and relationships.
We can - we must - dismantle the tech platforms. In The Internet Con, Cory Doctorow explains how to seize the means of computation, by forcing Silicon Valley to do the thing it fears most: interoperate. Interoperability will tear down the walls between technologies, allowing users leave platforms, remix their media, and reconfigure their devices without corporate permission.
Interoperability is the only route to the rapid and enduring annihilation of the platforms. The Internet Con is the disassembly manual we need to take back our internet.
