Summary

Queen Serena and her allies have fled the massacre, taking Princess Linka with them.

For Jean, it's heartbreak; for his friends, far worse. Leaving the Arctic ice behind, Jean and the others must come to terms with their losses, as they close in on the Baltic home of the hated Duke Gorgon.

As the lies around him unravel, Jean marches from one infuriating revelation to another. Finally, he must do what he's never done before: place his trust in others.

For only at the end of all things, as the sun dies and Shangri-La falls, will Jean know what it means to step into eternity.

Lettice Galbraith is yet another of those mysterious women of British literature of whom little was recorded.
Lizzie Susan Gibson was born on the 27th January 1859 in Kingston-Upon-Hull in Yorkshire into a comfortable middle-class family.
Her education was primarily private but at fifteen her father died, and life became rather different.
After several years in London, she moved with her mother to Reigate in Surrey.
In 1885 she published her first story anonymously and her pseudonym ‘Lettice Galbraith’ only appeared from late 1892.
Although her canon of works is small, she mainly achieved her reputation on a single volume of ghost and supernatural stories entitled ‘New Ghost Stories’.
After her mother’s death in 1901 she moved to London and continued to write, this time moving on from the short story to the novel, as well as reverting to her given name.
For the last two decades of her life, she did not continue her literary career.
Lettice Galbraith died on 8th July 1932 at Downe, then in Kent. She was 73.

The Saturnalia carnival marks three years since Nina walked away from Philadelphia's elite Saturn Club—with its genteel debauchery, arcane pecking order, and winking interest in alchemy and the occult. In doing so, she abandoned her closest friends and her chance to climb the social ladder. Since then, she's eked out a living by telling fortunes with her Saturn Club tarot deck, a solemn initiation gift that Nina always considered a gag but has turned out to be more useful than she could have ever imagined.

For most, the Saturnalia carnival marks a brief winter reprieve for the beleaguered people of the historic city, which is being eroded by extreme weather, a collapsing economy, and feverish summers—whose disease carrying mosquitos are perhaps the only thing one can count on. Like Thanksgiving or Halloween, Saturnalia has become a purely American holiday despite its pagan roots; and nearly everyone, rich or poor, forgets their troubles for a moment.

For Nina, Saturnalia is simply a cruel reminder of the night that changed everything for her. But when she gets a chance call from Max, one of the Saturn Club's best-connected members and her last remaining friend, the favor he asks will plunge her back into the Club's wild solstice masquerade, on a mysterious errand she cannot say no to.
