Can you remember the first time you encountered true darkness? The kind that remains as black and inky whether your eyes are open or closed? Where you can't see your hand in front of your face?

Jacqueline Yallop can. It was in an unfamiliar bedroom while holidaying in Yorkshire as a child, and ever since then she has been fascinated by the dark, by our efforts to capture or avoid it, by the meanings we give to it and the way our brains process it.

Taking a journey into the dark secrets of place, body and mind, she documents a series of night-time walks, exploring both the physical realities of darkness and the psychological dark that helps shape our sense of self. Exploring our enduring love-hate relationship with states of darkness, she considers how we attempt to understand and contain the dark, and, as she comes to terms with her father's deteriorating Alzheimer's, she reflects on how our relationship to the dark can change with time and circumstance.

Darkness captivates, baffles and appals us. It's a shifty thing of many textures, many moods, a state of fascination and of horror, an absence and a presence, solace and threat, a beginning and an end. Into the Dark is the story of the many darks that fascinate and assail us. It faces the darkness full on in all its guises and mysteries, celebrating it as a thing of beauty while peering into the void.

Henrietta Dorothy Huskisson was born in January 1851 in Gillingham, Kent.
Little reliable information on her life is available and almost nothing on her early life.
The first concrete information concerns her marriage at age 18 to the solicitor Isaac Edward Everett.
It was only at the age of 44 that she began her literary career under the pseudonym of Theo Douglas, a popular device in a society that still frowned upon women writing for income.
During her lifetime she was a popular author and wrote 22 books and those were published by 17 different publishers.
Although she wrote some historical novels her main output was centered on fantasy and supernatural themes.
Henrietta Dorothy Everett died in Weston-on-Trent in Derbyshire in September 1923.

    NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!
“Savagery appeased can only grow. Once you give in to it, it must escalate, like a fire searching for air.”
The man who won the Pulitzer Prize for GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, who wrote the classic films THE VERDICT and WAG THE DOG sounds his alarm about the Visigoths at our gates.
In RECESSIONAL he calls out, skewers, mocks, and, most importantly, dissects the virus of conformity which is now an existential threat to the West.
A broad-ranging journey through history, the Bible, and literature, RECESSIONAL examines how politics and cultural attitudes about rebellion have shifted in the United States in the last generation. By screaming down freedom of thought and expression, Mamet explains, we kill invention and democracy – the foundations of security and growth.
A wickedly funny, wistful and wry appeal to the free-thinking citizen, RECESSIONAL is a vital warning that if we don’t confront the cultural thuggery now, the commissars and their dupes will transform the Land of the Free into the dictatorship at which they aim.

Anthony (251-356CE) lived in Egypt, and became one of the fathers of Christian desert monasticism. When he was about 18 years old, and having inherited a large fortune, he heard a sermon about Jesus challenging the rich young ruler to "go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven; and come, follow Me." (Matt 19:21) Antony immediately sold all he had, and went out into the desert to life a life of poverty, chastity and obedience. For the rest of his life, he fought demons, performed miracles, becoming a legend in his own long lifetime. (Summary by Matthew James Gray)

    Pamela Edwards was going blind.
What job could she do without vision?
How would she support herself and her children?
When Pamela received her retinitis pigmentosa diagnosis, it sent her world into chaos. As a single mother of three small children, she had to fight. Giving into the blindness was never an option. She needed to find a way but feared time was not on her side. With the help of those closest to her, she found the resources and confidence to persevere.
Consumed with self-doubt, Pamela pursued training and education to help her function in daily life without vision. Every experience taught her something new about herself and helped her to go on another day. Despair consumed her, but she reached deep within and searched her inner soul. She wrapped herself in music. She found joy in her children. She prepared for a future without sight. And she journaled almost every day. But with each passing day, month, and year, she waited for the morning when she would wake up to complete darkness.
Many years later, with a small field of vision remaining, Pamela revisited her personal journals from the years when she struggled to make it through the day. She saw them in a new light. The grief that had overwhelmed her had not kept her from finding joy and purpose in life. The journey brought her full circle in her healing and self-growth. Through every bittersweet hardship, she was transformed. She replaced the days of feeling inadequate with days of creative self-expression. Now, she sees her life for what it is and what it has always been.
    A kaleidoscope of beauty.
