Summary

In "Following the Color Line," Ray Stannard Baker embarks on an incisive exploration of race relations in the United States during the early 20th century. The book, rich in journalistic integrity and narrative drive, combines personal anecdotes, investigations, and a call to social consciousness, reflecting the fervors of the Progressive Era. Baker employs a journalistic yet literary style, intertwining factual reporting with compelling narratives that highlight the systemic injustices faced by African Americans, making a formidable contribution to American literature and social criticism. His work serves as both a documentary and a poignant critique of the sociopolitical landscape at the time, examining the intersections of race, class, and policy across various states. Baker, an esteemed journalist and reformer, was instrumental in advocating for social justice issues, and his own experiences as a white man witnessing the pervasive inequalities deeply informed his writing. His commitment to racial equity is evident throughout his career, which encompassed reporting from diverse communities and engaging with the unfolding dynamics of race. Inspired by the potent changes of his time, Baker enables readers to confront the delicate and often painful realities surrounding race in America. "Following the Color Line" is essential reading for those seeking a deeper understanding of the historical context of race relations in the U.S. This profound work not only resonates with ongoing conversations about race but also serves as a pivotal reminder of the struggle for equality. Baker's insightful analysis and passionate prose make this a timeless contribution to both American literature and social advocacy, inviting modern readers to reflect on the enduring implications of his findings.

China's rise is altering global power relations, reshaping economic debates, and commanding tremendous public attention. Despite extensive media and academic scrutiny, the conventional wisdom about China's economy is often wrong. Cracking the China Conundrum provides a holistic and contrarian view of China's major economic, political, and foreign policy issues.

Yukon Huang trenchantly addresses widely accepted yet misguided views in the analysis of China's economy. Huang explains that misconceptions arise in part because China's economic system is unprecedented in many ways—namely because it's driven by both the market and state—which complicates the task of designing accurate and adaptable analysis and research. Further, China's size, regional diversity, and uniquely decentralized administrative system poses difficulties for making generalizations and comparisons from micro to macro levels when trying to interpret China's economic state accurately.

This book not only interprets the ideologies that experts continue building misguided theories upon, but also examines the contributing factors to this puzzle. Cracking the China Conundrum provides an enlightening and corrective viewpoint on several major economic and political foreign policy concerns currently shaping China's economic environment.

"A gripping account of survival and a condemnation of the conditions that marginalize and endanger the unsheltered." —KIRKUS
"Superb... Sharp dialogue, incisive observations, and polished prose." —BookLife EDITOR'S PICK
Her mother was a hacker-for-hire and drug dealer to Silicon Valley's elite; after everything went wrong she was homeless and alone on San Francisco streets at the age of thirteen. Fleeing her mother's life on the run from a double-crossed cartel and fresh out of witness protection, she joined Silicon Valley's children foraging food from San Francisco's trash cans and sleeping in abandoned cars -- while tech's earliest generations of workers partied, broke laws, and spat on homeless kids begging for spare change under the glow of tech's latest creations.
A Fish Has No Word For Water is a memoir about what it's really like for homeless kids, the strength of chosen family, and a hard love letter to San Francisco.
This memoir of survival unflinchingly shows Silicon Valley's children begging in the shadows of tech's shining towers, the surprising care circles formed by adults in San Francisco's LGBTQ community, and a city that is a mosaic of technologies and peoples that should not be together, but are. It upends stereotypes about children who survive abuse, young sex workers, LGBTQ youth, resilience in the face of immense grief and trauma, and how communities form to overcome some of the deadliest forms of discrimination. It reveals to readers that there was never a case for tech's shine in the first place.
Most of all, it is a story of tremendous resilience and how we can remake trauma into an invitation to be part of a larger world.

    Farewell Address Oval Office

On January 11, 1989, Reagan gave the following farewell address to the nation from the Oval Office. The two things I’m proudest of are the economic recovery which created 19 million new jobs and that America is respected again in the world.
In 1980 pundits said our economic policies would cause inflation and collapse while our foreign policies would lead to war. Instead, tax cuts created “the longest peacetime expansion in our history” and “an explosion in research and new technology.” We knocked “down protectionist walls abroad instead of erecting them at home.”
We rebuilt our defenses and saw a new peacefulness around the globe. “Countries across the globe are turning to free markets and free speech and turning away from the ideologies of the past.”
I went into politics to protect something precious. “Our Constitution is a document in which ‘We the People’ tell the government what it is allowed to do. In the 1960s the government was taking our freedom with rules and regulations and confiscatory taxes.
People are “not free unless government is limited. There's a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: As government expands, liberty contracts.”
Are “we doing a good enough job teaching our children what America is and what she represents in the long history of the world?” “America is freedom -- freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of enterprise. And freedom is special and rare.” Let’s start with more attention to American history.
I see America as a “shining city upon a hill” teeming with all kinds of people living in harmony, with ports humming with commerce, with doors open to anyone with the will to get here, a beacon and magnet for all who must have freedom.

The instant bestseller from Djamila Ribeiro that sparked a major Black feminist movement in Brazil

In a society shaped by the legacies of enslavement, white supremacy, and sexism, who has the right to a voice? In this elegant essay, Djamila Ribeiro offers a compelling intervention into contemporary discussions of power and identity: the concept of "speaking place." A crucial component of conversations on race and gender in Brazil, speaking place is the idea that everyone has a social position in the world and that what we are able to say, and how it is received by others, depends on it. Ribeiro traces the history of Black feminist thought through several centuries, examining the ways that Black women have been silenced, ignored, and punished for speaking.

Building on feminist standpoint theory, and in conversation with the works of Sojourner Truth, bell hooks, Audre Lorde, and others, Ribeiro invites all of us to recognize where we stand, to imagine geographies different from those we've inherited, and to speak a more humane world into being.
