Summary

An encyclopedic collection of profiles of the people who shaped New Jersey’s coastline—from architects and businessmen to sports figures and entertainers. The Jersey Shore evokes images of boardwalks and beach resorts, but its beginnings were far different. In the mid-nineteenth century, visionary entrepreneurs transformed the sleepy agrarian and maritime communities of the Garden State coast with a series of energetic new visitors and venues. Artists, politicians, athletes, entertainers and ordinary residents all played a hand in revitalizing the region. Major development of resorts began in Atlantic City in 1854, and it grew into “America’s Favorite Playground.” Joel Hayward was principally responsible for the formation of Ocean County, and the Albert brothers popularized Pinelands folk music. In the twentieth century, construction became more residential, and beloved businesses like the Smithville Inn started to cater to long-term patrons. New Jersey historian Randall Gabrielan traces the stories of the people who turned the Jersey Shore into the summer and residential destination that it is today.

A little book of timeless wisdom by the founder of TinyBuddha.com: An “engaging, thought-provoking book” that explores life’s biggest questions (Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project).   What is the meaning of life? Why are relationships so hard? What does it take to be happy? The answers to these and life’s other questions are explored in author Lori Deschene’s Tiny Buddha.   In 2008, Deschene began asking life’s biggest questions on Twitter. The many insights that came flooding back to her became the starting point for this uniquely modern guide to life’s most ancient mysteries. Through the process of engagement, research, and personal reflection, Deschene learned that these questions unite us. And while no one answer is right for everyone, the simultaneous lack and abundance of answers is the answer.  Tiny Buddha combines many of the responses Deschene received with her own insightful essays and lessons from wise teachers throughout time, as well as practical tips and exercises to help you bring more meaning and intention to your life. Deschene also shares her own experiences overcoming depression, isolation, self-loathing, and a sense of meaninglessness. The result is a guide that helps readers discover the endless possibilities of a life lived mindfully in the present, connected to others.

New York Times Bestseller: A Pulitzer Prize–winning author retraces the voyages of Captain James Cook: “Alternately hilarious, poignant, and insightful.” —Seattle Times

Captain James Cook’s three epic journeys in the eighteenth century were the last great voyages of discovery. His ships sailed 150,000 miles, from the Arctic to the Antarctic, from Tasmania to Oregon, from Easter Island to Siberia. When Cook set off for the Pacific in 1768, a third of the globe remained blank. By the time he died in Hawaii in 1779, the map of the world was substantially complete.

Tony Horwitz, author of Confederates in the Attic, vividly recounts Cook’s voyages and the exotic scenes the captain encountered: tropical orgies, taboo rituals, cannibal feasts, human sacrifice. He also relives Cook’s adventures by following in his wake to places such as Tahiti, Savage Island, and the Great Barrier Reef to discover Cook’s embattled legacy in the present day. Signing on as a working crewman aboard a replica of Cook’s vessel, Horwitz experiences the thrill and terror of sailing a tall ship. He also explores Cook the man: an impoverished farm boy who broke through the barriers of his class and time to become the greatest navigator in British history, whose voyages helped create the “global village” we know today.

“With healthy doses of both humor and provocative information, the book will please fans of history, exploration, travelogues and, of course, top-notch storytelling.” —Publishers Weekly

“Horwitz retells the sailor’s story and tries to re-create first contact from the point of view of the locals—Tahitians, Maoris, Aleuts, Hawaiians, and others—and judge the legacy of his landing . . . thought-provoking . . . brims with insight.” —Booklist

“A rollicking read that is also a sneaky work of scholarship . . . new and unexpected insights into the man who out-discovered Columbus. A terrific book.” —Nathaniel Philbrick, National Book Award winner and New York Times–bestselling author of In the Heart of the Sea

“Well-researched, gripping, and peppered with humorous passages.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“Part Cook biography, part travelogue, and very much a stroke of genius.” —Philadelphia Inquirer

W. Bush and Bill Clinton, and his masterly orchestration of 1994's "Gingrich Revolution" and the Contract with America, which catapulted him to national prominence and forever changed congressional and national politics.Drawing upon untold stories from Gingrich and those who know him best—political allies and opponents, Washington insiders and political iconoclasts, Capitol Hill staffers and colleagues—Shirley has crafted a fascinating, humorous, humanizing, and insightful account of a true American original.

In 2017, David got what he thought was a mild touch of the ‘flu. This book is the story of why David would make a lousy doctor. Contrary to the book’s title, David had lymphoma and it was terminal. But A Mild Touch of the Cancer isn’t your standard ‘how I survived’ compendium. It is a hilarious tale, written while battling one of life’s greatest challenges. It’s a book about living with optimism and positivity, by a self-proclaimed Genetically Modified Organism. David’s book documents a year of gruelling treatment, which at one point nearly made him sell his house in order to raise the necessary $1M for trial CAR-T cell treatment in Boston, US. It was this treatment that saved his life. It’s not just a book for those living with cancer – it’s for anyone that enjoys an uplifting story of survival against the odds – and a good laugh.
