Summary

In "For the Honor of the School," Ralph Henry Barbour crafts an engaging narrative centered around the trials and triumphs of adolescence within the academic sphere. Set against the backdrop of a prestigious boarding school, Barbour employs a rich, descriptive style that captures the complexities of school life, friendship, and rivalry. The novel intertwines themes of honor and integrity as it follows the protagonist's journey to navigate challenges, embodying the moral and ethical dilemmas often faced by young individuals. With its vivid characterizations and spirited dialogue, Barbour's work exemplifies early 20th-century American literature, reflecting contemporary societal values and the burgeoning emphasis on youth development during this period. Ralph Henry Barbour was an American author known for his affinity for youth literature and his personal experiences in boarding schools. His background as a student and later as a teacher provided him firsthand understanding of the dynamics of student life and the profound impact educational institutions have on character formation. This deep connection to the setting is evident in the authentic portrayal of the adolescent spirit, making the narrative resonate with readers both young and old. I highly recommend "For the Honor of the School" for those who appreciate coming-of-age stories infused with ethical questions and spirited camaraderie. This book is not only a nostalgic journey into the past but also serves as a significant exploration of values that are timeless and universally relevant.

It was all very confusing, the reasons for the war, the nature of the enemy. The Yucconae had been contacted on one of the outlying planets of Proxima Centauri. At the approach of the Terran ship, a host of dark slim pencils had lifted abruptly and shot off into the distance. The first real encounter came between three of the yuk pencils and a single exploration ship from Terra. No Terrans survived. After that it was all out war, with no holds barred. Now though, the Yucks had made their mine fields sentient, they could seek out and destroy Terran ships. The only response was to put a human brain into a ship. The results were, to say the least, surprising to everyone. No one expected what would happen. Least of all the generals who thought up the idea. The human brain in the spaceship had ideas of his own and they did not include listening to the generals.

Fíasól is a seven-year-old crab living in Green Grove in Grasby. Well, she is not actually a crab. She is a girl born in the Cancer star sign, and in her opinion that stinks. So she’s decided to adopt a brand new star sign for herself, it’s called the Flowery Butterfly and is a sign made specially for people who don’t want to be Cancerians.
She lives in Green Grove with her mum and dad, her big sisters Pippa and Bidda, and a couple of poodles, Hansína and Jensína.
Fíasól’s best friend is called Ingo. He is nine years old and lives in the house diagonally opposite hers. Harold, Herbert and Heba live in the house directly opposite. They are also specially good friends of Fíasól’s.
“I’ll never have to leave Green Grove,” Fíasól sometimes says. “I’ve got all my friends here, my stuff, my bed, and the food of course.”
“You’ll need to go to school,” her ten-year-old sister Pippa retorts.
“Yeah, but then I’ll come straight back home because everything I need is here,” Fíasól replies.
“What if you need to see the doctor?” Pippa asks.
“Then I’ll just make a call and get the doctor to come and see me here,” Fíasól says.
“But what if…” Pippa continues, and so it goes on, the sisters bickering day in and day out.
“Oh, I have such an amazingly big imagination,” Fíasól sometime says, sounding pleased with herself. She is right of course.
“You are queen of your very own enormous imagination,” Fíasól’s mum says to her. “But you’ll have to be careful not to let your ideas fly so high that you lose track of them and they come to a sticky end.”
If you live in a big world of imagination you’re either doing just fine, or you’re in trouble. The thing is, it’s often so difficult to recognise whether an idea is good or bad. Good ideas can get you into trouble and bad ideas can look as if they’re rather good, to start with.
