"Ballet History" explores the rich and captivating evolution of ballet, from its origins in Renaissance courts to its modern-day status as a globally celebrated art form. The book traces ballet's development through pivotal periods, such as the Romantic era, which saw the rise of the ballerina and ethereal themes, and the Ballets Russes, known for its groundbreaking choreography and design. Readers will gain insight into the rigorous training methodologies, the physiological demands placed on dancers, and the cultural values that have shaped ballet across generations. The book approaches the topic through a blend of historical narrative, technical analysis, and cultural commentary. The Collapse of the Soviet Union...

The Soviet Union, once the most powerful socialist state on the planet, dominated global politics and economics for much of the 20th century. From its establishment in 1922 until its disintegration in 1991, the USSR stood as a superpower, rivaling the United States in military strength, technological innovation, and ideological influence. The Soviet Union was not just a political entity; it was the manifestation of a grand vision of socialist governance that sought to reshape the world. Its rise to power was marked by revolution, war, and the forging of a unique socio-economic structure that stood in stark contrast to the capitalist world.

However, by the late 1980s, the Soviet Union faced insurmountable challenges. The centralized economy, which had initially driven industrial growth, was beginning to falter under the weight of inefficiency and stagnation. The military and political dominance the USSR had long enjoyed began to erode, and the ideological tenets that had once inspired its citizens no longer resonated with the younger generation. The political leadership, while still powerful, was marked by infighting, and the population grew disillusioned with the government’s inability to reform. Amid this turmoil, Mikhail Gorbachev ascended to the position of General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1985. Gorbachev’s policies of perestroika (restructuring) and glasnost (openness) sought to address the growing dissatisfaction and revive the Soviet state, but they inadvertently exposed the deep-rooted problems that had been festering for decades.

The decision to allow greater political freedom and economic flexibility unintentionally sparked a wave of unrest throughout the Soviet republics. Nationalist movements, long suppressed, began to rise, and demands for greater autonomy became louder...

A powerful account of Jewish resistance in Nazi-occupied Europe and why such resistance was so remarkable.

Most popular accounts of the Holocaust typically cast Jewish victims as meek and ask, "Why didn't Jews resist?" But we know now that Jews did resist, staging armed uprisings in ghettos and camps throughout Nazi-occupied Europe. In Hope and Honor, Rachel L. Einwohner illustrates the dangers in attempting resistance under unimaginable conditions and shows how remarkable such resistance was. She draws on oral testimonies, published and unpublished diaries and memoirs, and other written materials produced both by survivors and those who perished to show how Jews living under Nazi occupation in the ghettos of Warsaw, Vilna, and Lódz reached decisions about resistance. Using methods of comparative-historical sociology, Einwohner shows that decisions about resistance rested on Jews' assessments of the threats facing them, and somewhat ironically, armed resistance took place only once activists reached the critical conclusion that they had no hope for survival. Rather than ask the typical question of why Jews generally didn't resist, this powerful account of Jewish resistance seeks to explain why they resisted at all when there was no hope for success, and they faced almost certain death.

Ms. Donna Haskins is an African American woman who wrestles with structural inequity in the streets of Boston by inhabiting an alternate dimension she refers to as the “spirit realm.” In this other place, she is prepared by the Holy Spirit to challenge the restrictions placed upon Black female bodies in the United States. Growing into her spiritual gifts of astral flight and time travel, Donna meets the spirits of enslaved Africans, conducts spiritual warfare against sexual predators, and tends to the souls of murdered Black children whose ghosts haunt the inner city.

Take Back What the Devil Stole centers Donna’s encounters with the supernatural to offer a powerful narrative of how one woman seeks to reclaim her power from a lifetime of social violence. Both ethnographic and personal, Onaje X. O. Woodbine’s portrait of her spiritual life sheds new light on the complexities of Black women’s religious participation and the lived religion of the dispossessed. Woodbine explores Donna’s religious creativity and her sense of multireligious belonging as she blends together Catholic, Afro-Caribbean, and Black Baptist traditions. Through the gripping story of one local prophet, this audiobook offers a deeply original account of the religious experiences of Black women in contemporary America: their bodies, their haunted landscapes, and their spiritual worlds.
