Beschreibung

R. D. Blackmore's "Tales from the Telling-House" is a captivating collection of narratives that intricately weave together folklore, rural life, and the rich tapestry of English countryside culture. Written in a lyrical yet accessible style, the stories draw deeply on local traditions and oral storytelling, rendering vivid depictions of characters and landscapes. The text resonates with Blackmore's affinity for nature and the quaint charm of rural England, situating itself within the Victorian literary context where naturalistic observations and moral lessons coalesce in an enchanting manner. R. D. Blackmore is a notable Victorian novelist best known for his acclaimed work "Lorna Doone." His background as a writer and his immersion in the Devonshire landscape undoubtedly informed his storytelling approach in "Tales from the Telling-House." Blackmore's early experiences in the pastoral settings fueled his desire to capture the authenticity and rhythm of rural life, as well as the idiosyncratic characters who inhabit it. He championed the dialect and folklore of the region, breathing life into the narratives through rich descriptions and regional idioms. Readers will find "Tales from the Telling-House" an essential addition to the study of Victorian literature and an entrancing read for anyone drawn to the beauty of storytelling. This collection not only showcases the depth of Blackmore's literary skill but also serves as a mirror reflecting the values and traditions of a bygone era, making it a compelling exploration of humanity through the lens of folklore.

William Hope Hodgson was born in Essex, England on November 15th, 1877.

Over his short career he produced a large body of work which explored and covered many genres. From horror, to science fiction, to stories on the sea, where he had spent much of his early life.

In 1899, at the age of 22, he opened W. H. Hodgson's School of Physical Culture, in Blackburn offering tailored exercise regimes for personal training.

Eventually the business shut down and he immersed himself in writing. An article in 1903 ‘Physical Culture versus Recreative Exercises’ led the way into fiction writing. In 1904 came his first short story ‘The Goddess of Death’. It was the beginning of an intensely creative period in his life.

He wrote novels, poetry and many, many short stories including series on the Sargasso Sea and Captain Gault.

One of his most memorable creations was his Carnacki, Supernatural Detective creation. This fused together his passion for sleuthing and interest in the Occult. It was a memorable success.

When war drew its shadow over Europe Hodgson received a commission as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. In 1916 he was thrown from a horse and suffered a serious head injury; he received a mandatory discharge, and returned to writing.

Hodgson recovered sufficiently to re-enlist but at the Battle of Ypres in April 1918 he was killed by an artillery shell.

Bucharest, before and during World War II, where Bernard Davidescou lives with his parents and his older brother on Triumph Street, in the middle of a courtyard block inhabited by a dozen Jewish families and two Christian ones. When Romania, under General Ion Antonescu's dictatorship, allies itself with Hitler and invades the USSR, the Jews in Bucharest face the threat of being sent to the Nazi extermination camps, after having survived the terror of the fascist Iron Guard. However, each Sunday morning, young Bernard, age twelve, passionate about politics and history, amazes the adults in the courtyard, Jews and Christians alike, with his analysis of the political situation in Romania and the development of the war on all fronts.

'Rue du Triomphe' is the story of this young boy and his dreams and torments during this dark period of human history, while also chronicling a family in crisis, the discovery of sexuality and first loves, and the distraction offered by the cinema, religious searching and idealistic aspirations for a better world.

    DARK NIGHT IN BIG ROCK

Smoke Jensen is mighty proud of his son Louis for finishing law school. But he can't help being a little disappointed that Louis isn't returning to the Sugarloaf Ranch. Instead, he's setting up his own law practice in nearby Big Rock—a career choice that turns out to be every bit as dangerous as fending off cattle rustlers. The boy's first case lands him smack in the middle of a heated dispute between two riled-up ranchers over water rights. If Louis can't settle them down, the whole thing could blow up into a bloody range war. Then a scheming con man shows up in town to stir up trouble—and ends up dead. Now Louis has to defend his sister's boyfriend on murder charges. What's worse, the real killer is still out there. And he's ready to slaughter again . . .

Smoke Jensen's son may be a lawyer now. But if there's one thing he learned from his daddy, it's that in places like Big Rock, men live and die by one law alone: the law of the gun . . .
