  Passive aggression is a form of indirect expression of hostility, where individuals communicate negative feelings, frustration, or anger without openly addressing them. Rather than confronting an issue head-on, the person engages in behaviors that subtly undermine or resist others, often making it difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of tension. These actions are often seen as passive because the aggressor avoids direct confrontation, preferring instead to express their displeasure in subtle, often disguised ways. While passive aggression can sometimes seem harmless or even humorous, it can cause significant distress and damage to relationships over time. 
  Understanding passive aggression requires an exploration of the psychological mechanisms behind it. People who exhibit passive aggressive behavior often struggle with direct confrontation. This may stem from fear of rejection, a lack of assertiveness, or an inability to express anger healthily. In many cases, these individuals are unable or unwilling to articulate their true emotions and instead choose passive-aggressive tactics to deal with frustration. This behavior can manifest in a range of actions, including procrastination, forgetfulness, silent treatment, sarcasm, and even sabotage. 
  One of the challenges of dealing with passive aggression is that it is often hidden beneath seemingly innocuous actions or words. For example, someone might agree to help with a task but intentionally delay or perform it poorly, thus conveying their resistance without direct confrontation. Similarly, someone might offer backhanded compliments or use sarcasm to indirectly express contempt while maintaining a facade of politeness. These subtle acts of hostility can leave the recipient confused, frustrated, and unsure of how to respond, as the negative feelings are often not openly acknowledged.

  Georgia, the last of Britain's American mainland colonies, began with high aspirations to create a morally sound society based on small family farms with no enslaved workers. But those goals were not realized, and Georgia became a slave plantation society, following the Carolina model. But looking at the Salzburgers, who emigrated from Europe as part of the original plan, provides a very different story. 
   
   
   
  The Good Forest reveals the experiences of the Salzburger migrants who came to Georgia with the support of British and German philanthropy, where they achieved self-sufficiency in the Ebenezer settlement while following the Trustees' plans. Because their settlement comprised a significant portion of Georgia's early population, their experiences provide a corrective to our understanding of early Georgia and help reveal the possibilities in Atlantic colonization as they built a cohesive community. 
   
   
   
  The relative success of the Ebenezer settlement, furthermore, challenges the inherent environmental, cultural, and economic determinism that has dominated Georgia history. That well-worn narrative often implies (or even explicitly states) that only a slave-based plantation economy could succeed. With this history, Auman illuminates the interwoven themes of Atlantic migrations, colonization, charity, and transatlantic religious networks.

  "I set out to study and practice Vipassana meditation in India fifty years ago. Then, as now, I characterized myself as both a spiritual seeker and a writer. During the six months that I sojourned in meditation centers and monasteries, observing the strict rules of retreat, I nevertheless spent several hours a day feverishly filling notebooks by lamplight with tightly packed script legible only to me, recording my internal experiences.
   
  I wanted to tell a story, because I am by nature a story teller, but on my return to America I was a bit disconcerted to find that my detailed accounts read like data recorded by a naturalist hidden in the bush observing the behavior of a strange creature in the wild, information that would have little interest to anyone except an extreme specialist in the field.
   
  Up until then my unpublished works were lightly fictionalized autobiographical accounts of my young life, but fiction wouldn’t be accurate enough to tell this tale.
