Summary

Plato's "Theaetetus" is a profound dialogue that delves into the nature of knowledge, probing the question, "What is knowledge?" Through an engaging conversation between Socrates and the young mathematician Theaetetus, Plato presents a captivating exploration of epistemology, offering three notable definitions of knowledge: perception, true belief, and justified true belief. The narrative is marked by its Socratic method, characterized by dialectical reasoning and critical interrogation, which invites readers into the philosophical inquiry that remains relevant in contemporary discussions of knowledge and belief. Plato, a pivotal figure in Western philosophy, deeply influenced by Socratic dialogues and the intellectual currents of Ancient Greece, penned "Theaetetus" during a period of rich philosophical discourse in Athens. His background as a student of Socrates and his engagement with mathematics and metaphysics shaped his exploration of knowledge, revealing the tensions between perception and reality. Plato's philosophical ambitions aimed not only to define knowledge but also to encourage readers to critically examine their own epistemic foundations. "Theaetetus" is an essential read for anyone intrigued by the philosophical pursuits of understanding knowledge in its multifaceted dimensions. Scholars, students, and casual readers alike will find value in Plato's rigorous examination of epistemology, which resonates across millennia, bridging ancient philosophy with modern thought. This dialogue is not merely a historical artifact; it is a vital text that continues to challenge and inspire philosophical inquiry.

    What if virginity wasn't a fact—but a strategy?
In a world obsessed with chastity, control, and feminine mystique, The Virgin Strategist exposes the raw mechanics behind one of society's most powerful illusions: the untouchable woman. This isn't a book about sex—it's about the absence of it, and the social currency that "not giving in" can generate.
From purity culture to OnlyFans rebrands, this book explores how modern women wield the idea of virginity—real or fabricated—as a weapon of control, manipulation, and upward mobility. Whether she's a born-again good girl, a celibate tease, or a single mother suddenly setting moral boundaries, the Virgin Strategist isn't lying. She's surviving. She's performing. And she's winning.
Drawing from psychology, sociology, and unapologetic real-world case studies, this brutal analysis dives into:How celibacy can command more power than sexThe female fear of being "too available"Faux purity as brandingLong-distance virginity performancesEmotional withholding and religious re-inventionAnd the emotional toll of always pretending to be "clean"
The Virgin Strategist is not for the faint-hearted. It is for readers who want to understand the game behind the innocence, the strategy behind the smile, and the power behind the "no."
Dead serious. Laughably real. Disturbingly true.

A powerful account of Jewish resistance in Nazi-occupied Europe and why such resistance was so remarkable.

Most popular accounts of the Holocaust typically cast Jewish victims as meek and ask, "Why didn't Jews resist?" But we know now that Jews did resist, staging armed uprisings in ghettos and camps throughout Nazi-occupied Europe. In Hope and Honor, Rachel L. Einwohner illustrates the dangers in attempting resistance under unimaginable conditions and shows how remarkable such resistance was. She draws on oral testimonies, published and unpublished diaries and memoirs, and other written materials produced both by survivors and those who perished to show how Jews living under Nazi occupation in the ghettos of Warsaw, Vilna, and Lódz reached decisions about resistance. Using methods of comparative-historical sociology, Einwohner shows that decisions about resistance rested on Jews' assessments of the threats facing them, and somewhat ironically, armed resistance took place only once activists reached the critical conclusion that they had no hope for survival. Rather than ask the typical question of why Jews generally didn't resist, this powerful account of Jewish resistance seeks to explain why they resisted at all when there was no hope for success, and they faced almost certain death.

A riveting look behind the mask of an NHL goalie, The Save of My Life offers understanding and hope to anyone living with mental illness
By the time he was twenty-two years old, goaltender Corey Hirsch had realized his childhood dream of playing in the NHL, won an Olympic medal and drunk from the Stanley Cup. While he excelled on the ice, out of the net Hirsch was plagued by persistent dark thoughts and ceaseless anxiety. On days when he could barely get out of bed, he was able to push aside the endless loop of dark thoughts running inside his brain long enough to win a game. But as soon as he got back home, the agonizing cycle started all over again. And it continued, until finally he was able to confide in a team trainer who helped him get the professional treatment he needed. Diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, Hirsch was able to embark on the rocky road to recovery. As one of the first professional athletes to talk openly about mental health, Hirsch wrote about his OCD for the Players’ Tribune. His piece remains one of their most-read articles ever.
As Hirsch says, “I am not insane. I am not a bad person. I am not weak. I have an illness, and there is a treatment.”

The story of Abraham, the first Jew, portrayed as two lives lived by one person, paralleling the contradictions in Judaism throughout its history

In this new biography of Abraham, Judaism's foundational figure, Anthony Julius offers an account of the origins of a fundamental struggle within Judaism between skepticism and faith, critique and affirmation, thinking for oneself and thinking under the direction of another. Julius describes Abraham's life as two separate lives, and as a version of the collective life of the Jewish people.

Abraham's first life is an early adulthood of questioning the polytheism of his home city of Ur Kasdim until its ruler, Nimrod, condemns him to death and he is rescued, he believes, by a miracle. In his second life, Abraham's focus is no longer on critique but rather on conversion and on his leadership over his growing household, until God's command that he sacrifice his son Isaac. This test, the Akedah (or "Binding"), ends with another miracle, as he believes, but as Julius argues, it is also a catastrophe for Abraham. The Akedah represents for him an unsurpassed horizon—and in Jewish life thereafter. This book focuses on Abraham as leader of the first Jewish project, Judaism, and the unresolvable, insurmountable crisis that the Akedah represents—both in his leadership and in Judaism itself.
