Beschreibung

In "Plato: Complete Works," readers are presented with a comprehensive anthology that encapsulates the breadth of Plato's philosophical discourse. This volume includes dialogues such as "The Republic," "Phaedrus," and "Symposium," showcasing his inventive use of Socratic method and dialectical form. The literary style blends dramatic narrative with rigorous philosophical inquiry, offering insights into ethics, politics, education, and metaphysics, all reflective of the tumultuous socio-political landscape of ancient Athens. Plato's works serve not only as foundational texts in Western philosophy but also as profound meditations on the nature of truth and the ideal society. Plato (c. 427-347 BCE) was a student of Socrates and a teacher of Aristotle, shaping the trajectory of Western thought. His unique historical context'—an Athenian citizen during the Peloponnesian War'—shaped his views on democracy and governance. Influenced by Socratic ideals and the quest for absolute truth, Plato endeavored to capture profound philosophical concepts through dialogue, allowing readers to engage critically with the material. Murray Morgan's classic history of the Olympic Peninsula, originally published in 1955, evokes a remote American wilderness "as large as the state of Massachusetts, more rugged than the Rockies, its lowlands blanketed by a cool jungle of fir and pine and cedar, its peaks bearing hundreds of miles of living ice that gave rise to swift rivers alive with giant salmon."

Drawing on historical research and personal tales collected from docks, forest trails, and waterways, Morgan recounts vivid adventures of the area's settlers—loggers, hunters, prospectors, homesteaders, utopianists, murderers, profit-seekers, conservationists, Wobblies, and bureaucrats—alongside stories of coastal first peoples and striking descriptions of the peninsula's wildlife and land.

Freshly redesigned and with a new introduction by poet and environmentalist Tim McNulty, this humor-filled saga and landmark love story of one of the most formidably beautiful regions of the Pacific Northwest will inform and engage a new generation of listeners.

I guess during the time I was struggling with middle school peers and worried about what other girls thought of my clothes, something nasty happened approximately 6,500 miles away, which is only an 8-hour flight from where I used to live. Who would have thought that even in the 90s, such atrocities would be committed? The movie Hotel Rwanda has depicted some sad displays of human cruelty, although the brutality of it has mostly been censored for the sake of wider audiences. When you read the descriptions of the Rwandan genocide, and try to imagine the scope of the death toll and methods being used to commit the war crimes, you can’t help but feel deeply saddened and disgusted by what human people are capable of.
Throughout the Rwandan Civil War, between April seventh and July fifteenth, 1994, the Rwandan genocide happened. Equipped militias murdered members of the Tutsi minority ethnic group, and some moderate Hutu and Twa, throughout about 100 days. According to the most regularly accepted academic estimates, between 500,000 and 800,000 Tutsis passed away. The death toll (consisting of Hutu and Twa casualties) is approximated to be around 1,100,000.
How did all of this happen? How did it get so far? And happened during and after this short time period, in which so many lives were claimed? Let’s find out in this comprehensive book about the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

What if words aren’t just signs—but symbols of truth?
Cratylus by Plato is an early and enduring exploration of language, etymology, and the connection between names and reality. This modern translation brings clarity and life to the dialogue between Socrates, Cratylus, and Hermogenes as they debate the origins and accuracy of words. Is language merely a social convention, or does it reflect the essence of things?
    What you'll discover inside:
    •	A Riveting Dialogue on Language and Truth – Socrates leads a spirited debate on the nature of names.
    •	The Origins of Linguistic Philosophy – Engage with Plato’s pioneering ideas on semantics and reality.
    •	A Modern, Accessible Translation – Readable and resonant for today’s listeners.
    •	Philosophy That Still Speaks Today – Timeless questions about communication, meaning, and perception.
Cratylus challenges us to look beyond the words we use—and ask what they truly reveal.

Stealing My Religion - Not Just...

We think we know cultural appropriation when we see it. Blackface or Native American headdresses as Halloween costumes—these clearly give offense. But what about Cardi B posing as the Hindu goddess Durga in a Reebok ad, AA's twelve-step invocation of God, or the earnest namaste you utter at the end of yoga class?

Liz Bucar unpacks the ethical dilemmas of a messy form of cultural appropriation: the borrowing of religious doctrines, rituals, and dress for political, economic, and therapeutic reasons. Does borrowing from another's religion harm believers? Bucar sees religion as an especially vexing arena for appropriation debates because faiths overlap and imitate each other and because diversity within religious groups scrambles our sense of who is an insider and who is not.

Stealing My Religion guides us through three revealing case studies—the hijab as a feminist signal of Muslim allyship, a study abroad "pilgrimage" on the Camino de Santiago, and the commodification of yoga in the West. Reflecting on her own missteps, Bucar comes to a surprising conclusion: the way to avoid religious appropriation isn't to borrow less but to borrow more—to become deeply invested in learning the roots and diverse meanings of our enthusiasms.
