Summary

While awaiting execution in his prison cell, Socrates is visited by his friend Crito, who has arranged a safe escape. Socrates refuses to flee, engaging Crito in a dialogue about the nature of justice and the citizen's obligation to the laws of the state. He argues that responding to injustice with further injustice is wrong, and that he must abide by the legal verdict of the city that raised him. It is a powerful examination of civil obedience and the social contract.

Recollections of Life in Ohio is the autobiography of William Cooper Howells (1807-1894), father of the American novelist William Dean Howells. The Howells were Welsh woolen mill owners. William Cooper's father brought the family to America in 1808--at a time when Great Britain actually forbid skilled workmen from emigrating, thus putting the father's practical knowledge of mill machinery in great demand. Small scale industries--paper and woolen mills, flour mills, and distilleries were sprouting apace with farms in the newly opened lands of Ohio, where the Howells settled in 1813. This was a time and place where neighbors joined together to raise log barns and husk corn, where local peach brandy was a staple drink, and where religious revivalism permeated the social fabric, fanned by itinerant preachers such as Johnny Appleseed. The Howells were originally Quakers, but William Cooper's father converted to an "enthusiastic" brand of Methodism, and William Cooper in later years followed the teachings of Swedenborg.William Cooper Howells' recollections see him herding the family pig down the road with a noose around its hind leg, acting as "corner man" at a log barn raising, curing tobacco in a smoke house, grubbing stumps, fighting snakes, and wrestling with what it meant to be "religious" at the camp meetings to which father took him. Early on, William Cooper showed a literary bent and an interest in politics. He became a printer and a newspaper man and, in the 1870's and 80's served as U.S. consul in Quebec and Toronto. The novelist William Dean Howells writes of his dad in the introduction to the Recollections: "My father was always a very close and critical observer, both of nature and human nature and equally a lover of both. He was not a poet in the artistic sense, but he was a poet in his view of life, the universe, creation; and his dream of it included man, as well as the woods and fields and their citizenship." Recollections of Life in Ohio is a fascinating and enjoyable read for anyone interested in U.S. frontier history.

Lieutenant-General James Longstreet, commander of the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, was a brilliant tactician and strategist. Prior to the Civil War there were many technological developments, of which the rifled musket and cannon, rail transport, and the telegraph were a few. Longstreet adapted to these technological changes and the disparity between the belligerents making recommendations on how the war should be fought. Unfortunately, his advice was not heeded and given the weight it deserved. In contrast to many other southern generals, Longstreet advocated for defensive warfare, using entrenchments and trying to maneuver the enemy to assault his position, conserving manpower, resources, and supplies.

Longstreet was a pragmatic and methodical general and had his suggestions been utilized there would have been a better outcome for the South. Many historians and biographers have misunderstood Longstreet and his motives, not focusing on the total picture. This work offers a fresh and unique perspective on Lieutenant-General James Longstreet and the Civil War. This narrative takes a new viewpoint of the Civil War and the generals who tailored their designs to pursue the war, analyzes Longstreet's views of the generals and the tactics and strategy they employed, and examines why Longstreet proposed and urged a new type of warfare.

In a series of essays that explore the notion of what brings significance to our existences, clarifying why we have this longing beyond the present moment and an insatiable dissatisfaction with where we are, scholar Frank Martela tackles the subject of finding meaning in life.
With beautiful decorative elements and an engaging design, the book approaches its subject in a readily digestible form. It grapples with some of life’s most pressing questions, like ""Is happiness a worthy goal?"" and ""What is the foundation for meaning in a secular society?"" and ""Is life an existential void?"" yet Martela answers these questions and more in a relaxed, conversational tone and with a wry sense of humor, placing some of life’s greatest philosophical concerns and quandaries into a modern-day context.
Martela quickly and concisely gets to the heart of the matter: your place in the world and how to find meaning in life as countless thinkers and philosophers have done before, yet the emphasis here is on what we do with the life we have and how we can make it more meaningful. Part prescriptive and part armchair philosophy book, A Wonderful Life is accessible to everyone, from the well-read scholar to the apprentice as well as anyone curious about how to extract the greatest meaning and sense of purpose from their existence.

"Falling in love usually happens when you least expect it. But love isn't the only thing that happens without warning."
Lexi saw him for the first time in the fourth-floor pediatric cancer clinic. He was tall, handsome, and had a full head of dark hair-nothing like the little kids she was used to meeting during her routine hospital visits. No, Ricky was wholly unexpected. He stared at her, mesmerized by her stunning blue eyes. She looked at him carefully, wondering what his motivation for hanging out in a cancer clinic could be. He smiled confidently, unbothered by her bald scalp. Lexi softly returned the smile. Neither of them aware how this moment would entwine them forever.
In a beautiful and heartwarming true story, author Emily Gould weaves the narrative of her daughter's incredible life. The story of Lexi and Ricky begins with a chance meeting but grows into a perfect tale of real teenage romance, the good and the ugly of cancer treatments, and the inspiring power of love overcoming all odds.
