Sinopse

( newly updated TOC )

The Harvard Universal Classics, originally known as Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf, is a 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature, compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot and first published in 1909.

Eliot had stated in speeches that the elements of a liberal education could be obtained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. (Originally he had said a three-foot shelf.) The publisher P. F. Collier and Son saw an opportunity and challenged Eliot to make good on this statement by selecting an appropriate collection of works, and the Harvard Classics was the result.

Eliot worked for one year with William A. Neilson, a professor of English; Eliot determined the works to be included and Neilson selected the specific editions and wrote introductory notes. Each volume had 400–450 pages, and the included texts are "so far as possible, entire works or complete segments of the world's written legacies." The collection was widely advertised by Collier and Son, in Collier's and elsewhere, with great success.

Eight years later Eliot added a further 20 volumes as a sub-collection titled 'The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction', offering some of the greatest novels and short stories of world literature. The exhaustive anthology of the 'The Harvard Classics' comprises every major literary figure, philosopher, religion, folklore and historical subject up to the twentieth century.

At 8 a.m. on February 3, 1975, Eli Black leapt to his death from the 44th floor of Manhattan's Pan Am building. The immigrant-turned-CEO of United Brands—formerly United Fruit, now Chiquita—Black seemed an embodiment of the American dream. United Brands was transformed under his leadership—from the "octopus," a nickname that captured the corrupt power the company had held over Latin American governments, to "the most socially conscious company in the hemisphere." How did it all go wrong?

Eli and the Octopus traces the rise and fall of a business leader and his influence on the nascent project of corporate social responsibility. Born Menashe Elihu Blachowitz in Poland, Black arrived in New York at the age of three and became a rabbi before entering the business world. Driven by the moral tenets of his faith, he charted a new course in industries known for poor treatment of workers, partnering with labor leaders to improve conditions. But risky investments, economic recession, and a costly wave of natural disasters led Black away from the path of reform and toward corrupt backroom dealing.

Matt Garcia presents an unvarnished portrait of Black's complicated legacy. Exploring the limits of corporate social responsibility on American life, Eli and the Octopus offers pointed lessons for those who hope to do good while doing business.

Shadowman - Records of a Life...

    Johnny Daukes

Johnny Daukes’ memoir Shadowman tells the story of a young life corrupted by sexual abuse and a subsequent journey writing music, comedy and film that amounted to an unconscious recording and processing of that early trauma. The author’s experiences playing in bands, writing and performing radio and TV comedy and refusing to be defined by the inexplicable events of his youth makes for a fascinating, compelling and frequently hilarious dissection of an unconventional life.
Shadowman becomes more complex and outrageous with every chapter: The malign presence in the family of the Catholic sect Opus Dei, the abuser becoming part of the family through marriage, the terrible realisation as further victims come to light. And yet all the time, Johnny Daukes walks a fine line between making your heart break and your sides ache.
With frequent reference to lyrics, sketches and scripts that he wrote throughout his career, at the time unaware of their true significance; this is a memoir that laces brutality with hilarity, trivia with profundity and showbiz excess with lacerating self-analysis.
Written with an irreverence that conceals big questions about pain, art, memory and love, this is a unique book that is melancholy but never mawkish and at its heart is an affirming appetite for life. The rich and eclectic production of the audiobook betrays Johnny Daukes’ background as comedy writer, musician, voice artist and recording engineer and it oozes the rackety gallows humour of a true maverick.
"What a unique book Johnny Daukes' Shadowman is. On the surface it's memoir, but at its heart it's a book that wrestles with big questions about pain, art, memory and love." Mat Osman
"Shadowman is an emotional and powerful read, deeply honest and very personal, and at times bearable only by Johnny Daukes' ability to find comedy in horrific circumstances. An astonishing piece of work." David Quantick

A fascinating journey through the history of one of the transatlantic world’s most popular hymns

Sung in moments of personal isolation or on state occasions watched by millions, “Amazing Grace” has become an unparalleled anthem for humankind. How did a simple Christian hymn, written in a remote English vicarage in 1772, come to hold such sway in all corners of the modern world? With this short, engaging cultural history, James Walvin offers an explanation.

The greatest paradox is that the author of “Amazing Grace,” John Newton, was a former Liverpool slave captain. Walvin follows the song across the Atlantic to track how it became part of the cause for abolition and galvanized decades of movements and trends in American history and popular culture. By the end of the twentieth century, “Amazing Grace” was performed in Soweto and Vanuatu, by political dissidents in China, and by Kikuyu women in Kenya. No other song has acquired such global resonance as “Amazing Grace.” Behold a compelling story of music and social change.

“The doctor can make the incision, but I’ll make the  decision.” — Shirley Temple Black“I have a streak of stubbornness and a loud voice.” — Rose Kushner“I believe that one must leave the world a better place than you found it.” — Evelyn Lauder

There was a time when women’s health was repressed and breast cancer wasn’t discussed, but Shirley Temple Black, Rose Kushner, and Evelyn Lauder refused to be silenced. Their courage ignited a movement that changed the way society addresses breast cancer. When these “radical sisters” were diagnosed, they faced a medical world of myths, outdated protocols, and a shocking lack of research. Breast cancer awareness was absent, and treatment options were scarce. Yet, Shirley, Rose, and Evelyn—empowered by their diagnoses—became trailblazing advocates for breast cancer research, early detection, and women’s health. Their efforts opened the conversation and set the stage for a new era of breast cancer advocacy.Radical Sisters, researched by award-winning biographer Judith L. Pearson, chronicles their powerful journeys. Taking cues from the women’s health and AIDS movements, these inspirational women demanded a shift in how society viewed breast cancer: a cause worthy of public attention and action.More than 300,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. They stand on the shoulders of these brave women, whose legacy has empowered generations to advocate for better healthcare, increased research, and greater awareness.
