Summary

"Le Papillon and the Candle" is an award-winning musical composition, recognized as one of the winners of the “Fables of Leonardo da Vinci in Music” competition, organized by theCarano4Children foundation and judged by Stefano Cucci on behalf of Maestro Ennio Morricone. This work is a vivid musical interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's fable The Butterfly and the Candle, written in both English and French, with the two characters expressing themselves in different languages. Eclectic in style, the piece blends simple, lyrical melodies sung by children with virtuosic accompaniment and demanding solo passages. This composition exists in four distinct versions: one for soprano, baritone, and piano; another adding a children’s choir; a third incorporating a string quartet alongside the choir, soloists, and piano; and a purely instrumental version for string quartet. Optional staging ideas enhance the theatrical nature of the performance. For instance, the soprano could light a candle during the opening piano bars and hold it throughout the performance, while the baritone blows out the candle at the conclusion. Countless other staging possibilities exist, and performers are strongly encouraged to explore these to bring additional dramatic depth to the piece.

In the spring of 2022, the renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company boldly, and perhaps cavalierly, re-emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic with a brand new, 43 million dollar, state-of-the-art theatre. Director Yasen Peyankov insisted he cast the premiere production - a brand new, adaption of The Seagull - with as many Steppenwolf ensemble members as possible. This meant coaxing one non-actor, director and writer Eric Simonson, into coming back to the stage after a 33 year absence. Taking a leap in the dark, and battling the demons of stage-fright, confidence and homesickness, Simonson took up the challenge and started on a journey into the great theatrical unknown. Part diary, part history of the Chicago Theater Renaissance, this memoir takes the reader behind the scenes of a Steppenwolf classic, and inside the head of a man desperate to rediscover the joy and craft of acting.

The Chronicle – Book Three (July to September)

This is history... but not as you know it! At Waterloo, women are stripping the corpses of their valuable shoes and stockings yet the Highlanders are left in mass graves with their coarse tartan socks still on. Roy Strong attending a private dinner with the Prime Minister notes that Margaret Thatcher in floaty chiffon is "the apotheosis of the boss's wife, with the appeal of cosmeticised putty." Even at the  coronation of George IV, Queen Caroline, who is denied entry to the Abbey, is observed looking like "a blowsy landlady". As for the nude revue 'Oh Calcutta', it is noted that "there are some parts of the anatomy over whose movements the choreographer has no control”.  Join Fanny Kemble as she travels at break-neck speed aboard Stephenson's Rocket and Joyce Grenfell as she washes her tennis balls and bakes them in the oven while Lord Byron conducts a fiery seaside funeral of his close friend Shelley.
