IPPY (Independent Publishers) 2021 award-winning Best European Non-Fiction. An unforgettable literary masterpiece written over 200 years ago by a remarkable woman during the struggle and fall of Europe's first attempt at a constitutional democracy. A coming-of-age story, love drama, and historical saga all in one, it reads more like a novel than an authentic memoir. Despite its epoch, the highs and lows of Countess Anna's journey reverberate with timeless issues that still affect us all today. This courageous young woman wrote down extraordinarily visceral details of the horrendous experiences she was living through between 1791 and 1795 -- fires, blizzards, near-starvation, bloody battles between nations, and savage bodily assaults. Nevertheless, she miraculously retained her poetic sensitivity and hopefulness, never succumbing to bitterness or resignation.Translated from mainly Polish over 60 years ago, this book contains unique descriptions of the lifestyle of an unknown peasant clan who rescued and revived Anna after a murderous carriage attack; graphic accounts of childbirth and healing practices; ghastly war scenes; candid comments on women's suppression and social class inequalities; poignant confessions of conflicts between love and duty; and explicitly sexual passages that Anna copied from the memoirs of her lascivious cousin Sophia. This Diary has never heretofore been published in its authenticity. Its present availability finally fulfills Countess Anna Berezowska's profound wish to share her experiences and insights with the world.

A military biography of the American soldier and statesman who managed the WWII Lend-Lease program and acted as governor of postwar Germany.During World War II, President Roosevelt called upon Lucius D. Clay to run military procurement. It took a man of his logistical genius to oversee the requirements of an eight-million-man army. Clay set priorities, negotiated contracts, monitored production, and coordinated military Lend-Lease—all without a breath of scandal. In 1945, Clay was called upon once again to act as military governor of a decimated Germany. He dealt with everything from de-Nazification to quarrelsome allies, from feeding a starving people to processing vast numbers of homeless and displaced. Above all, he had to convince a doubting American public and a hostile State Department that German recovery was essential to the stability of Europe.Clay went on to play key roles in business and politics, advising presidents of both parties. He helped run Eisenhower's 1952 campaign, led the federal highway program, raised the ransom money for the Bay of Pigs prisoners, and boosted morale in Germany as the Berlin Wall was built. In honor of their debt to him, the Berliners placed a simple stone tablet at his West Point grave: Wir Danken Dem Bewahrer Unserer Freiheit—We Thank the Defender of Our Freedom.

James Douglas Morrison was an American singer, poet, and songwriter who was the lead vocalist of the rock band the Doors. Due to his wild personality, poetic lyrics, distinctive voice, unpredictable and erratic performances, and the dramatic circumstances surrounding his life and early death, Morrison is regarded by music critics and fans as one of the most iconic and influential frontmen in rock history. Since his death, his fame has endured as one of the popular culture's most rebellious and oft-displayed icons, representing the generation gap and youth counterculture.

Together with pianist Ray Manzarek, Morrison founded the Doors in 1965 in Venice, California. The group spent two years in obscurity until shooting to prominence with their number-one single in the United States, "Light My Fire", taken from their self-titled debut album. Morrison recorded a total of six studio albums with the Doors, all of which sold well and received critical acclaim. Morrison was well known for improvising spoken word poetry passages while the band played live. Manzarek said Morrison "embodied hippie counterculture rebellion".

Morrison developed an alcohol dependency throughout the band's career, which at times affected his performances on stage. In 1971, Morrison died unexpectedly in Paris at the age of 27, amid conflicting witness reports. His premature death made him a member of the infamous 27 club. Since no autopsy was performed, the cause of Morrison's death remains disputed.

Kristoffer Kristofferson is a retired American singer, songwriter, and actor. Among his songwriting credits are "Me and Bobby McGee", "For the Good Times", "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", and "Help Me Make It Through the Night", all of which were hits for other artists.
