Sinopse

In the Socrates Meets series, Peter Kreeft revives the classic method of bringing philosophy to life through dialogue. In eight innovative volumes, he uncovers the principles, assumptions, and sometimes dangerous conclusions of some of history’s most influential minds. Each dialogue imagines a purgatory where we can listen in on conversations between Socrates and the great thinkers who, centuries later, picked up the philosopher’s torch. Each conversation investigates one of the philosopher’s key works, a short, readable classic that raises central questions both for philosophy and for life. In this volume, Socrates cross-examines Immanuel Kant, the father of modern idealism and author of the Critique of Pure Reason and Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals, exploring the framework of human knowledge, the will, and the foundation for morality.

"Freedom's Battle" is an influential essay written by Mahatma Gandhi in 1922 during the Indian independence movement. In this thought-provoking piece, Gandhi reflects on the principles of nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience as a means to challenge and overcome oppressive systems.

The essay begins with Gandhi acknowledging the critical juncture at which the fight for freedom stands. He passionately articulates the necessity of the struggle for independence and the moral imperative for individuals to resist unjust laws and policies.

Gandhi introduces the concept of Satyagraha, emphasizing the power of truth and nonviolence. He argues that nonviolent resistance is not a strategy of the weak but a potent force that requires great courage and strength of character. He believes that nonviolence is not a submission to injustice but a proactive, assertive force that can transform both the oppressor and the oppressed.

Throughout the essay, Gandhi explores the moral duty of individuals to engage in civil disobedience when faced with unjust laws. He contends that obedience to an unjust law is in itself a form of violence, and breaking such laws nonviolently becomes a powerful instrument for societal change.

Gandhi also touches on the idea of self-suffering as a means of resistance. He advocates for willingly enduring the consequences of civil disobedience as a way to awaken the conscience of the oppressor and the society at large.
"Freedom's Battle" is a call to action, urging individuals to recognize their agency in the struggle for freedom and justice. It remains a significant work that encapsulates Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence and its application in the pursuit of social and political change. The essay serves as a timeless inspiration for movements advocating civil rights, justice, and freedom around the world.

Sparky Reardon — who dedicated 36 years to his alma mater, the University of Mississippi — was a witness to the best, and worst, of times at Ole Miss. Reardon engaged with every facet of campus life, navigating the wild and unpredictable situations sparked by students (and, at times, by visitors). Reardon found himself in the midst of campus crises where he facilitated the university family through tragedy and loss (some involved student casualties); he navigated intricate battles for freedom of expression on campus (including confrontations with the Ku Klux Klan and loony street preachers); he gently guided students (and sometimes administrators and politicians) through complex judicial issues; and he had a rare, insider’s view of the evolution of Oxford, Mississippi, from a quiet college town to a vibrant cultural hub. In The Dean, Sparky lays bare the joys and hardships of what he describes as “the best job in America.” In 1968, Reardon enrolled at Ole Miss with an eye on law school. Two years later, his plans shifted. Summoned to the dean’s office to account for his role as social chairman in breaking university rules, Reardon experienced a pivotal moment of clarity. As Reardon remembered, “It might have been the result of one of our parties running too late or getting too loud, or perhaps there was a chance that beer was involved.” He realized that someone, someday, would need to take this man’s place. Reardon left that meeting determined to become the dean of students at Ole Miss. Raised in Clarksdale, Mississippi, a young Sparky Reardon turned to books after a severe knee injury ended his sports days. Guided by inspiring teachers, he cultivated a passion for writing. Artist and author William Dunlap said, “Sparky Reardon’s The Dean is anecdotally rich and beautifully written. His prose — which soars — is once again proof that language is a Southerner’s birth

"This whip-smart collection is a playful celebration of feminine power.”
    —Publisher’s Weekly
"Goddam funny ... a clinic in irony. What a beautiful book.”
    —Ross Gay
"With the verve of Alice Fulton and the panache of Gerald Stern, Sysko keens into the canon, a welcome voice. Sing, indeed, heavenly muse.”
    —Alan Michael Parker
"With electric nerve, L.J. Sysko's savvy and often comic poems careen through American pop culture and the suburban world that infantalizes and traps women. Sysko fixes her gaze on adolescent girls and their trajectory into selfhood—a path that takes them through sexual shame and erasure, and then, as they age, into defiance."

    Selected by Patricia Smith
The Daughter of Man follows its unorthodox heroine as she transforms from maiden to warrior—then to queen, maven, and crone—against the backdrop of suburban America from the 1980s to today. In this bold reframing of the hero’s journey, L. J. Sysko serves up biting social commentary and humorous, unsparing self-critique while enlisting an eccentric cast that includes Betsy Ross as sex worker, Dolly Parton as raptor, and a bemused MILF who exchanges glances with a young man at a gas station. Sysko’s revisions of René Magritte’s modernist icon The Son of Man and the paintings of baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi, whose extraordinary talent was nearly eclipsed after she took her rapist to trial, loom large in this multifaceted portrait of womanhood. With uncommon force, The Daughter of Man confronts misogyny and violence, even as it bursts with nostalgia, lust, and poignant humor.
