Summary

For many, T. Rex founder Marc Bolan remains forever frozen in time as the poster boy of glam, the pop-rock genre he effectively launched with his March 1971 Top of the Pops appearance to promote ‘Hot Love’, the band’s first number one single. But this is to view him through too narrow a focus. In John’s Children he flirted with modernist art-rock. He sang folk songs of an otherworldly England in Tyrannosaurus Rex. He became a teen idol while dominating the singles and album charts and he also experimented with his unique brand of interstellar soul. Finally, he proclaimed himself ‘The Godfather Of Punk’ and became its patron, touring with The Damned and giving several major new wave acts their first television exposure. This book examines all aspects of Bolan’s career, from the genre-defying My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair… through the transitional A Beard Of Stars and T. Rex albums, the misunderstood Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow and the should-have-been comeback Futuristic Dragon. Along the way, it discusses Unicorn, the defining document of the Tyrannosaurus Rex years, and the essential T. Rex trilogy of Electric Warrior, The Slider and Tanx.

During the day Peter Gallagher is a lecturer in Events Management, but at night can be found scribbling away in his man-cave. Having talked about writing for decades it is only recently he decided to do something about it, with 2020 seeing the publication of his first short story and the commissioning of his first book. His favourite bands include T. Rex, The Ramones, and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, none of whom he has seen in concert. He Lives in Glasgow, Scotland.

The 1960s was simply the most exciting decade in music history known to man. The eruption of talent after the discovery of the Mersey Sound, spearheaded of course by the Fab Four, changed the world.
What was special was that for a glorious and colourful short period of time, hardly a week went by without some new creative talent emerging on our airwaves, some new direction in music being created; something fresh to excite us being presented for our edification. Looking back at the charts week by week you realise that there was an explosion in song writing, a huge growth in people being interested in music and, as a result, some really great sounds were made.
In this book we have not tried to quantify that, or even order those bands and artists who helped to change our society and our way of looking at it, but we have created a top 40 of artists that can simply not be ignored for what they did. From artists such as Cliff Richard to The Kinks and Pink Floyd, The Rolling Sones and, of course, The Beatles!

'Hilarious, heart-wrenching and packed with British music history.' - COLDPLAY A Virgin Radio Book of the YearIt's a life-and-near-death story. But whose life? And whose near-death?As a one-time NME journalist, former Xfm radio presenter, toilet-circuit promoter and the founder of enduring homespun British record label Fierce Panda, Simon Williams has been at the cutting, cutting, cutting edge of all things 'indie' for over thirty years. During his tenure as managing director of Fierce Panda (a role he holds to this day), Simon was responsible for tripping over bands such as Coldplay, Keane, Placebo and countless other acts of independent hue - some of whom have gone on to achieve earth-shattering musical superstardom, while others have merely baffled the crowd at the Bull & Gate in north London on a wet Wednesday evening.Unfiltered and unflinching, Pandamonium! is the story of Simon's time at the indie coalface, filled with insider anecdotes to entertain music enthusiasts everywhere - from the origins of a bootlegged Oasis release to Chris Martin's delight at reaching number ninety-two in the charts. But it is also the story of how Simon tried to bring a premature end to proceedings, documenting in blunt, matter-of-fact detail his longstanding mental-health struggles.Yet, despite his raw and often poignant honesty, Simon writes with the warmth, wit, self-deprecation and wide-eyed good fortune of someone who has stared into the abyss and survived, bounding down a few indie rabbit holes along the way.

In 1998, The Uninvited were poised to become the next multi-platinum darlings of the new millennia. With a hit song burning up the charts and a major label release described as “The breakthrough album of the next decade,” everything was teed-up for a life of sold-out arenas, gold plated Ferraris and Dom Perrion on draft. But the chances are you never heard of The Uninvited – so what the hell happened?
THE UNINVITED: ON THE ROAD WITH THE GREATEST ROCK BAND YOU NEVER HEARD is the story of 5 friends stuffed in a van on a Homer-esque nationwide odyssey, clinging desperately to a gossamer thread of one-hit-wonder fame while sharing the stage with legends like Cheap Trick, Blues Traveler, The Violent Femmes, Chris Isaak, and many more.
For two sweat-drenched and mind-altering years, The Uninvited had fame by the tender bits and squeezed hard. And for Steve, just when it looked like life couldn’t get any better, it did; Mia, so achingly unattainable for so many years, landed squarely in the attainable category. But all these dreams collided in a rush to come true, threatening to unravel everything, just when he held it all in his hand.
THE UNINVITED is a chaotic tale set in the early days of Napster and the last days of Warehouse Records on Sunset Blvd. It’s a memoir for anyone who’s ever cranked the volume up on Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins, or stood in the audience singing their lungs out, and wondering what life is like on the other side of that stage. Unlike any other rock memoir, THE UNINVITED chronicles the harrowing sacrifice necessary to attain a dream – and more importantly, what it takes to let it go.
And there was a gnome, too. He was kind of an asshole.

The Twilight Zone Haiku explores the essence of Rod Serling’s iconic, uncanny 1960s television show through haiku, giving us dazzling, spot-on snapshots of each episode. In seventeen syllables, Boykin captures the show's main objective: to deliver a keen jolt of existential awareness. As you read, you find yourself marooned on an alien planet, lost in time, trapped inside a mannequin, surrounded by the debris of a nuclear attack, and always, always powerless to forces beyond your control. The Twilight Zone Haiku conjures the trappings of each haunting plot of the series, but more astutely, its scalpel-edged soul. Special audiobook bonus content includes: an interview by Tom Elliot with Earl Holliman, the first actor to ever step into The Twilight Zone, a special conversation between the author, Chad Ellis Boykin and audiobook producer and narrator, Tom Elliot, host of The Twilight Zone Podcast, an interview with haiku poet, artist, author, publisher, and Weirdo Poetry webmaster Jason McBride, and a special behind the scenes interview by audio engineer Christopher Sadler with the author, including new Twilight Zone Haiku poems exclusive to the audiobook.“Fans of The Twilight Zone will love this wonderful collection of haiku based on episodes of the classic series. Like Rod Serling’s doppelganger, Chad Ellis Boykin distills the theme of each episode into seventeen perfect syllables. Even if you’ve never seen an episode, the haiku can be enjoyed for the precision of the language and the lessons they share about the human condition. This book is smart, playful, and a joy to read. Be warned: once you step into that slippery dimension between time, space, and the open page, you’ll have a hard time leaving The Twilight Zone Haiku.”-Chuck Augello, author of Talking Vonnegut: Centennial Interviews and Essays and The Revolving Heart, a Best Books of 2020 Selection by Kirkus Reviews.
