Synopsis

THE office was a small, square room on a third floor near Golden Square. It was sombre and unassuming. The furniture was nondescript. A suggestion of efficiency was provided by a steel filing-cabinet.
Outside, between this office and the corridor, was another even smaller room. In it MacMurray, a big, broad-shouldered, truculent-looking man, dozed over an evening paper. He wished Fenton would go home.
MacMurray— who had been "lent" by C.I.D. Central Office, and who spent most of his time wishing he was back there— divided his attention between the Greyhound Racing news and wondering about Fenton. MacMurray was curious about Fenton. Damned curious. He wondered why it should be necessary for him to stay put in the outer office for twenty-four hours at a stretch whilst Fenton sat at the desk in the other room waiting for telephone calls that seldom came, or spent an odd hour going through the filing-cabinet making pencil notes on folders. Folders which MacMurray never saw.

A corporate executive who has fallen from grace seizes an opportunity to salvage his career with the help of his ambitious wife in this gripping, psychologically astute New York Times–bestselling novel from the author of Executive Suite

This audiobook is narrated using advanced digital voice technology for clear, natural-sounding storytelling.

The keys to Lincoln Lord's success have always been his charm and amiability. He has been president of five different companies and serves as chairman for the White House's Far East Trade Mission. But now, just shy of fifty, he is no longer considered the boy wonder of business. He's unemployable. He and his wife, Maggie, have been forced to move out of their suite in Manhattan's Waldorf Tower and they have yet to pay this semester's tuition for their seventeen-year-old son's private school.

Then Lincoln is thrown a lifeline. Coastal Foods, a struggling cannery in New Jersey, needs a top executive to help get the company back on its feet. For the first time, Lincoln feels a part of something bigger than himself. And when he and Maggie are drawn into a major crisis at the plant, his leadership position is no longer just a job—or a steppingstone to the next one. It's a means of reclaiming his pride, his family, and his humanity.

An idyllic setting. A violent death!

If it hadn't been for the circumstances, Detective Inspector Keith Tremayne would have said the view was outstanding. Up high, overlooking the farmhouse in the valley below, the panoramic vista of Salisbury Plain stretching out beyond. The only problem was that near where he stood with his sergeant, Clare Yarwood, there was a body, and it wasn't a pleasant sight.

'What happened?' Tremayne asked. He was a cantankerous man, he knew that, and he wasn't in a good mood on account of the biting wind and the squelching mud underfoot.

'I found him when I came up here to check on the livestock,' the farmhand said.

'At what time?' Tremayne moved away from the body, attempting to find somewhere drier. The condition of the track up to the site was so bad that the vehicle sent to transport the dead man to the mortuary could not make it up. Even Tremayne and Clare had had to hang onto a tractor to get up the slope, and now the weather looked as if it were about to worsen.

Tremayne had never been keen on farms, and especially horses, although Clare loved them. Tremayne assumed she wouldn't be so fond of the one that trampled Claude Selwood to death.

A mass shooting. An amoral Romanian gangster. A Russian oligarch who claims to be an honest businessman, but isn't.

No one knows who was the target or why, but there are eight dead. The men seem the most likely, or could have it been one of the two women, the attractive Gillian Dickenson, or even the celebrity-obsessed Sal Maynard?

There's a gang war brewing, and if there are deaths, they don't care as long as it's not one of them. But to Detective Chief Inspector Isaac Cook, it's his area of London, and he needs to find out who killed the eight.

It's unpredictable, and initially, it had been the West Indian gangs that had held sway in the area. But then, a more vicious Romanian gangster had usurped them. And now he's being marginalized by the Russians. And their leader is the head of the most vicious Russian mafia organization, and he's got residency in England, as well as money and influence, the ear of those in power.

Everly Dupree's ex is a criminal, and now the FBI thinks she's his partner.
Which is just the cherry on top of a week that already includes ghost drama, nosy neighbors, and a suspicious white van parked across the street.
She might not have wanted to help murdered ghosts with their unfinished business, but Everly used to think she was at least good at it.
Until Amber Hale—the spunky, throttled-to-death reporter who decided it would be more fun to stick around and haunt Everly for the rest of her life. (Which, at this rate, may not be much longer.)
Then Everly's ex-husband, Paul, mysteriously vanishes amid (totally true) allegations of fraud, and the FBI starts asking very pointed questions—all aimed at Everly.
Suddenly she’s got agents watching her every move, neighbors placing bets on her arrest, and no choice but to dust off her amateur sleuth hat (again) to investigate the very people she’s been trying so hard to forget.
To survive the fallout, Everly will have to admit that Amber is as helpful as she is annoying, and accept her ghostly assistance if she wants to make it out of this one without becoming the next headline.
    Or worse—the next ghost.
