Summary

Gladys Lancashire and Cynthia Tilling live in a retirement community called 'The Village' where little happens to disturb their daily routine until a newspaper report on the cold case of banker Richard Pennington catches their eye. Pennington's body was left thirty years previously on the common next to 'The Village' on the exact spot where riding his bicycle on Christmas Day he knocked over and injured an eight-year-old girl, Jekina Iqbal who later died. Their curiosity aroused, the women visit the scene of the two incidents and find a credit card buried in the undergrowth which dates to the time the body was found.
Together with their fellow 'Village' resident, ex-senior police officer George Skelton they follow a trail which leads to Jekina's aunt, a lawyer and one of the leading supporters of women's rights in the world being put on trial for murder….

When ten-year-old Lukas disappears from his Copenhagen school, police investigators discover that the boy had a peculiar obsession with pareidolia: a phenomenon that makes him see faces in random things. A photo on his phone, posted just hours before his disappearance, shows an old barn door that resembles a face. Journalist Heloise Kaldan thinks she recognizes the barn—but from where? When Lukas’s blood-flecked jacket is found in the moat at Copenhagen’s Citadel, DNA evidence points to Thomas Strand, a former soldier suffering from severe PTSD. But then Strand turns up dead in his apartment, shot in the head execution style. What did the last person to see Lukas really witness that morning in the school yard? Was it really Lukas, or was it an optical illusion? Can you ever truly trust your eyes?

Esther was born in the shadows of Rio de Janeiro's underbelly a place where innocence dies young and survival is the only virtue. Trapped in a life of prostitution to feed her sick parents and herself, she learned early how to wear a smile that hid hunger, and how to lie without blinking. Then came the American quiet, rich, powerful. A man with secrets of his own and a strange kindness she didn't expect. He took her away, out of the streets and into a mansion half a world away. She became his wife. A fairy tale? Maybe. But Esther never forgot where she came from or how fast everything could be taken away. Wealth changed her, but not enough. It wasn't love that kept her in that house it was the money. And one day, she decided she wanted it all. With cold precision, she executed a plan: one bullet, no witnesses, no mistakes. But the man she killed had a mother a quiet woman with steel in her spine and grief sharper than a blade. For three years, she moved in silence, gathering evidence, watching, waiting. No badge. No backup. Just vengeance. When the truth cracked open, it wasn't the police who found Esther it was the mother. And in the end, justice came not with a gun, but with a sentence: life behind bars. No mansion. No freedom. Just the weight of her choices. A Quiet Man with a Gun is a gritty, slow-burning noir thriller about lust, betrayal, and the long reach of justice. It's a story of a woman who thought she could outsmart fate and a mother who proved otherwise.

Sisters are meant to look after each other. But Josie and I have secrets. Just like our mother did.

My husband and I have moved back into my childhood home: a pretty stone cottage by the sea. Our two kids love the huge garden and the views are breathtaking. The renovations will probably cost twice what they said, but I know it'll be amazing in the end.

I'm baking a cake when the builder calls me over. 'We've found something.'

    'What do you mean?'

'Bones,' he says. 'You've got bones buried at the bottom of your garden.'

The first person I call is my sister Josie. She'll know what to do. We've been there for each other ever since our mother walked out more than twenty years ago. We were just children. The only contact we had was a card on our birthdays—but they suddenly stopped when we reached the age of twenty-one.

We ask our father about the bones. What he tells us will shatter everything I thought I knew about my family.
