"Progress is not just electronics and robots; it’s also adaptation and correction of social structures in light of these technological advances," Shvalb asserts, warning that "the old democracy won't survive if we don’t adjust it to the new era."
After reviewing the social phenomena leading societies to dangerous places, he points out, "History teaches us that civilizations tend to fade, and when they do, it can happen very suddenly." He then explores the influence of social networks on public discourse, noting that "fake news spreads six times faster than truthful news." As a scientist in the field of hard sciences, he examines the dangers of advancing technology, particularly the role of AI in societal unrest. Shvalb questions, "Can technological mega-giants know us intimately enough to control our choices?"
Life as we knew it no longer exists. The benefits technology has given us come with a heavy price. In a world where social interactions are shaped by powerful platforms guiding the way we think, behave, buy, and choose, there is a real risk to our societies that we must consider. The last part of the book is dedicated to practical solutions and suggestions. Yet, despite its serious themes, "Our Western Spring: Where is Political Divide Leading Us?" is engaging and fun to read. If you're curious about who suffered from scrotal ascites, what is considered the worst film of all time, or why China's government hates Winnie-the-Pooh, this book is for you. This blend of intriguing trivia and insightful analysis makes the book both thought-provoking and enjoyable, offering readers a captivating journey through the complexities of modern society.

This introduction to cyborg theory provides a critical vantage point for analyzing the claims around emerging technologies like automation, robots, and AI. Cyborg analyzes and reframes popular and scholarly conversations about cyborgs from the perspective of feminist cyborg theory. Drawing on their combined decades of training, teaching, and research in the social sciences, design, and engineering education, Laura Forlano and Danya Glabau introduce an approach called critical cyborg literacy. Critical cyborg literacy foregrounds power dynamics and pays attention to the ways that social and cultural factors such as gender, race, and disability shape how technology is imagined, developed, used, and resisted.

Forlano and Glabau offer critical cyborg literacy as a way of thinking through questions about the relationship between humanity and technology. Cyborg examines whether modern technologies make us all cyborgs—if we consider, for instance, the fact that we use daily technologies at work, have technologies embedded into our bodies in health care applications, or use technology to critically explore possibilities as artists, designers, activists, and creators. Lastly, Cyborg offers perspectives from critical race, feminist, and disability thinkers to help chart a path forward for cyborg theory in the twenty-first century.

Thanks to his rise in the military and politics, Crassus’s renown and riches heavily influenced his contemporaries. In the wake of the Third Servile War, Crassus’ patronage helped position Caesar to be appointed governor of Hispania Ulterior. In order to maintain political office, which made him immune from prosecution for his debts, he left for modern day Spain before his praetorship expired. Caesar made this move knowing that governors were immune from prosecution, but governors also had vitally important military responsibilities via command of whatever legions were garrisoned in their territory. It would be as governor that Caesar’s military career truly took off, starting with his victories over a couple of local tribes. These military successes earned him the title Imperator, the Roman equivalent of the title of Commander.
Likewise, Caesar was heavily sponsored in his run for Consul by Crassus, and in a brilliant stroke of diplomacy, he succeeded in reconciling Crassus with Pompey, who was Rome’s most powerful general at the time. Alongside Pompey and Caesar, Crassus established the First Triumvirate, with Crassus supplying the funds, Pompey the muscle, and Caesar the political clout necessary for governing the city. Though later triumvirates officially wielded power, like the Second Triumvirate (which formed in the wake of Caesar’s assassination and included his heir Augustus and longtime general Mark Antony), this First Triumvirate acted behind the scenes to run Rome unofficially.
The triumvirate would come to an end when Crassus met a sudden and unexpected end while campaigning in the east against the Parthians. Ironically, his failed campaign is better remembered than the rest of his life because of the way his reputation brought about his manner of death: ancient writers claimed that shortly after he was killed in fighting, the Parthians poured molten gold down his throat and then used his head as a prop in a play.
