Summary

"There are moments, Jeeves, when one asks oneself, 'Do trousers matter?'""The mood will pass, sir."
Not only do trousers matter in the crazy world of P. G. "Plum" Wodehouse, they speak volumes: as does one's choice of suit, shirt, cuffs, studs, collar, tie, socks, shoes, spatterdashes, hat and stick. Jeeves, Bertie Wooster's "infallible" valet, is always there to guide us through this sartorial minefield, his trained eye able to spot the microscopic detail that separates the chic, de rigueur, and le dernier cri from the outré and farouche.
The seventh of Paul Kent's occasional essays on matters Wodehousean takes us on a fascinating and informative tour of what the well-dressed man (and woman) should wear in order to look just right, transporting us back to an era of top hats, white ties and tailoring that positively reeks with 1920s and 30s elegance.

Okay, imagine a quiet little town in Kansas, where life is, like, really simple and peaceful. That's Holcomb—until one chilling night in November 1959 flipped everything upside down. The Clutter family, just living their lives, was brutally murdered in their own home. Yeah, it's the kind of story that's so shocking it sticks with you, and that's exactly what this book, Holcomb's Scars: Clutter Family Murders by Muhsin Shikder, brings to life.
This isn't, um, just another dry true crime tale, though. Muhsin Shikder, who's actually a super passionate storyteller, digs deep into the heart of the Clutter family. He shows us who they were—their dreams, their everyday struggles, and the unimaginable tragedy that rocked Holcomb and the whole nation. It's, like, really a heart-touching listen that makes you feel the weight of what happened.
The book's split into seven gripping sections, each with titles that, well, just pull you right in—like "The Night Evil Walked In" and "Can Holcomb Ever Forget?" Every part uncovers a new layer of this American true crime classic, keeping you hooked from the moment you hit play. It's not only about the crime itself but also the lives it shattered, told in a way that's, yeah, totally emotional and raw.
So, if you're into true crime stories that go beyond the headlines and, um, actually make you feel something, this is your next listen. Perfect for fans of American history, gripping mysteries, or just a darn good story. Shikder's fresh take on the Clutter family murders—a case you might know from In Cold Blood—brings something new to the table, something that's, well, really special.
Grab your headphones and dive into Holcomb's Scars. It's one of those books that, like, stays with you long after it ends—because some stories are just too powerful to forget.

Amazing! An astonishing find! - AMITAV GHOSH
Nariman Karkaria, a young Parsi from Gujarat, had always wanted to see the world. So he left home as a teenager with fifty rupees in his pocket to do just that. After working in Hong Kong and Peking for a few years, in 1914, when war was in the air, he decided to volunteer for the British Army. Passing through China, Manchuria, Siberia, Russia and Scandinavia, he reached London early in 1915 and managed to register as a private with the 24th Middlesex Regiment. He was now a Tommy.
Incredibly, Karkaria saw action on three major fronts in the next three years. In 1916, he was in the trenches at the Battle of the Somme. After convalescing from an injury, he was sent off to the Middle Eastern Front where he fought in the Battle of Jerusalem in 1917. He was then transferred to the Balkan Front in 1918, where he served in Salonika. After being discharged, he returned to India and wrote a book in Gujarati about his years of travel and adventure, which was published in 1922.
Karkaria's war memoir is truly one of a kind. And in Murali Ranganathan's brilliant translation, this astonishing story comes alive with rare immediacy and vigour.

Collected here are six tales that span nearly two thousand years, from a Roman citizen writing a satire of the ‘historical’ literature of his time in 182 AD to Edgar Allan Poe exploring the idea of a scientific ascent to the moon in 1835. Humanity changed vastly across that time, and yet the moon never lost its allure, its promise of mystery and magic. By the late nineteenth century, it was clear that the moon’s surface was barren, and a wave of moon-based stories inaugurated the expansion into space of fiction.
Before we breached the atmosphere and sent men to our planet’s satellite, humanity spent countless millennia gazing up at the moon and wondering what might be there, telling stories by firelight of the mystery and magic of our constant and changing night-time companion.
