Summary

1097 AD. - During the events of the First Crusade, basileus Alex Komnenos tries in vain to prevent
the massacre of thousands of Seljuk Turks residing in Nicaea. Now tainted by the horrendous crime and fearful
of his reaction, the Crusaders give him as a sign of peace gift a lonely, frightened child with no parents left.
Moved to compassion by the look on the little orphan's face, the basileus decides to take him with him and make him live at the
Grand Palace of Constantinople together with his son of the same age. That Turkish child named Yahya will go down in history
as John Axuch, and will become a close friend of the future Emperor John II.
Within a lifetime dedicated to serving the Komnenos dynasty, Axuch will ascend to the prestigious title of Grand Domestic,
becoming a well-known and respected figure even beyond the imperial borders. But even at the height of his influence,
he will never forget his original mission: to watch over the basileus John, and eventually over his heirs.

Self-care is the conscious practice of taking care of oneself—physically, mentally, and emotionally—by engaging in activities that promote well-being. It is about recognizing the need for balance and nurturing our whole self. When we engage in self-care, we are actively choosing to invest in our health and happiness, which in turn enhances our ability to care for others and handle life’s challenges. It’s a practice that requires time, effort, and commitment, but its benefits are immeasurable.

The connection between mind, body, and spirit is at the heart of self-care. Each of these areas is intricately linked, and neglecting one can affect the others. For example, mental stress can lead to physical fatigue, and physical health challenges can impact our emotional state. When we address our self-care needs holistically, we are nurturing all aspects of our being, fostering a sense of harmony that radiates throughout our lives. By giving attention to each part of ourselves—our thoughts, our body, and our spirit—we cultivate a sense of balance and fulfillment that supports long-term well-being.

He had some downtime after graduation and before reporting for duty so he decided to hitchhike the world. A decision that would change his life forever. As he traveled, his approach to life and his future decisions changed. He hitchhiked through the Iron Curtain and worked on a collective farm in Hungary only to find that communism wasn't our real enemy. He met people from North Vietnam who showed him the real enemy was the U.S. war machine. Being an American was not popular in those days, but the people of the world showed Smith kindness and kept him alive when he ran out of money. The long road to decision showed him that people everywhere want peace, not war.Mark Paul Smith's hitchhike from Indiana to India in 1972 changed him from being an Air Force Officer into a conscientious objector. His faith in the United States of America was restored when he sued the government and won his case in federal court. His journey is one of faith, contemplation, and awakening, mixed with the freedom and abandonment of the 70s.

"Sometimes it is easier to see the trauma in others than it is in our own lives. It is in reading that we find validation. And in I Know Why She Stayed I had that experience, over and over. I did not know the term "economic abuse" but I have suffered from it. It is that shared experience that gives us words and power, for if we can name it, we can mourn what we lost, allow ourselves to feel rage, and finally release our pain and say, 'never again.'" - Lara Lillibridge, author of The Truth About Unringing Phones: Essays on Yearning and Girlish: Growing Up in a Lesbian Home
From Itch Perfect to the bonds of friendship, two gameshow participants' lives intertwine when they discover a shared trauma that restricted and shaped their futures. One trapped in a financially abusive marriage, the other forced into debt as a child, they begin to unravel the disturbing events of a shared truth: I Know Why She Stayed.
