Summary

Jorgi Williams hopes starting graduate school will go smoothly. He needs a break from his clingy and transphobic mother Kat, who still insists on calling him by his deadname. Moving into a duplex with a male roommate only sparks a fresh tirade from Kat, and Jorgi is sick of this treatment.
Thane Miller, Jorgi's roommate, is a fellow graduate student. Handsome in a skinny, alterna way, Thane is laidback and kind, and seems to accept Jorgi exactly as he is. Jorgi can't help developing a crush, despite his fear about whether Thane would date a transman.
But the question of love is put on hold when they receive evil spirits as a housewarming present. Thane locates and digs up a cursed jar in the front yard and reveals he is a Wiccan, a white witch. He begs Jorgi not to freak out. Far from being freaked out, Jorgi is fascinated. Thane introduces Jorgi to his coven and the coven leader asks the dreaded question: Who in Jorgi's life is capable of something like this? Jorgi's ex-best friend Christy is infamous for vicious grudges, and she's openly interested in black magic. Chance meetings with Christy seem to confirm she's guilty.
But not everything is adding up. As the demons grow powerful enough to talk, they claim Jorgi's soul soul has been bound to a powerful demon in a blood magic contract. That's something Christy wouldn't have the ability to do. Are the demons lying, or is the enemy still out there?
The stress of the demonic attacks, Kat's relentless transphobic hounding, and the world of blood magic opening up around Jorgi cause him a massive internal shift. Suddenly, he becomes aware there is a part of him who comes and goes and who claims their family is not as innocent and Christian as Jorgi always believed. Jorgi has Dissociative Identity Disorder, and his other selves are holding onto dark secrets about the Williams family's real religion. Thane is supportive every step of the way, causing Jorgi to fall in love.
Then one of Jorgi's inner selves points the finger at their mother, and Jorgi's sense of reality is thrown into chaos. Is his enemy Christy or his mother? Can Jorgi and Thane stop the haunting, break the evil contract, and get their happily-ever-after?

Don’t bring a kiss to a knife fight.

Roadkill. Violent. Brash. Obsessive. In the closet.
Clyde. Cunning. Ruthless. Biker royalty. Trapped on the other side of the same closet.

    Roadkill.

I’ve hated Clyde Turner since the moment I laid eyes on him. I hate him for existing, for tempting me, for being everything I can’t have.

Ice-blue eyes, a cocky smirk that makes my fists itch, a damn Hell’s Butchers MC prince. I want him violently, but since I can’t have him, I will destroy him. I killed his f*cking brother, and he’s next.

When a fire traps us together, death feels inevitable. With no way out and nothing left to lose, we trade confessions like poison-laced promises.

I say I wish I’d f*cked him. Just to break him. Just to see disgust twist his perfect face.

His reply is like a bullet.

    “I would have let you…”

    Clyde.

I should’ve burned to death in that fire, because now my worst nightmare has come true. Roadkill knows. He knows the secret I’ve spent years burying beneath blood, alcohol, and loyalty to my club.

I have to kill him. There’s no other way.

But a knife fight leads to kisses and a deal struck in the dark. We’ll keep it quiet. No one needs to know. Enemies with benefits, nothing more. A stolen moment here, a touch there, with no strings and no club betrayal.

Until one of us is dead, I’ll let myself fall into his bed, and in the meanwhile, I’ll keep looking for the bastard who killed my brother.

    The aftermath.

Nothing stays buried forever. Not secrets, not sins, and certainly not feelings. What starts as a forbidden tryst becomes something deeper. No matter how far we run, the shadows of our clubs and the weight of our hatred threaten to destroy us.

Some things you can’t come back from.

But that doesn’t stop us from one last kiss.

    And then, just one more.

This tenth-anniversary edition of Kate Cayley's award-winning collection includes three new stories.
A young mother intrudes into the life of an older woman, thinking she knows what's best. An academic becomes convinced that he is haunted by his double. Two children spy on their supposedly criminal neighbours. A man enables his cousin's predatory impulses out of loyalty, and a circus performer dreams of a perfect wedding. These characters fail despite their best intentions and continue on despite their failures.
The stories in How You Were Born, each more incisive and devastating than the last, examine the difficult business of love, loyalty, and memory. Sharing the bizarre and tragi-comic of life—whether in present-day Toronto or in small towns of the early 20th century—Cayley champions the importance of connections, even when missed or mislaid, and the possibility of redemption.

    ALEKS
After my divorce, I’m ready to have fun, date around, and not get into anything serious. Then I meet Gabe Crosby, superhero firefighter and a disgrace to the Crosby name. He doesn’t even like hockey!
Yet, there’s a draw to him I can’t deny—something I haven’t felt since my teens. But that’s the problem. I have no idea what dating is like, let alone how to do it with another man. He makes me flakey and nervous, and I’ve never been that guy.
Gabe turns me inside out and upside down in the best possible ways. I only recently became single, but if I continue to chase after him, I might not stay that way for long.
    GABE
When I meet Aleksander Emerson during an emergency call-out, there are three things that catch my attention: his sexy tattoos, his kind eyes, and his drunken offer to have my babies.
He’s new to Seattle and recently divorced, so I take him under my wing–and under my sheets. I’m showing him what the world of hookups is like, only those hookups turn into sleepovers and dates and public displays of jealousy.
Aleks is in his casual era, and I’m working my way toward settling down and starting a family. What the two of us have is fun, but not a good idea permanently.
Too bad Aleks has already set my life on fire.
