Summary

One night. One stage. One moment that changed everything.

On August 30, 1972, John Lennon and Yoko Ono stepped onto the stage at Madison Square Garden for a concert unlike any other. It was their first full-length live performance together, and for Lennon, the only major solo concert of his post-Beatles career. But this was more than just a night of music—it was a bold statement of love, defiance, and revolution at a time when America was in turmoil.

One to One: John & Yoko – Love, Music, and Revolution takes you deep behind the scenes of this historic event, revealing the tensions, triumphs, and untold stories that shaped one of the most significant performances in rock history. Drawing from exclusive sources, personal recordings, and newly uncovered details, this book captures the couple’s vision for the concert, their battles with the U.S. government, and the rising wave of political activism that fueled their art.

Set against the backdrop of early 1970s New York—a city pulsing with protest, creativity, and counterculture—this is the story of how two of the world’s most controversial artists used music as a weapon for peace. From their collaboration with the iconic Elephant’s Memory band to their support for radical activists like John Sinclair and Bobby Seale, the concert was a reflection of Lennon and Ono’s deep commitment to social justice.

But behind the idealism was a storm brewing. With the Nixon administration actively working to deport Lennon, the FBI watching their every move, and critics dismissing Ono’s avant-garde artistry, the couple faced relentless opposition. Yet, through it all, they remained defiant. The One to One concert was not just about raising money for disabled children—it was a declaration of artistic freedom, political resistance, and the power of music to unite people in the face of oppression.

This book also examines how the concert, long overshadowed by Lennon’s tragic fate, has been reinterpreted through time—including through the 2024 documentary One to One: John & Yoko. With restored footage and remastered sound, the film reignited interest in this momentous event, revealing just how forward-thinking and radical Lennon and Ono’s vision truly was.

More than fifty years later, the echoes of that night still resonate. The music, the message, and the movement that John and Yoko inspired continue to shape our world.

Whether you're a lifelong Beatles fan, a student of history, or someone fascinated by the intersection of music and activism, One to One: John & Yoko – Love, Music, and Revolution is the definitive account of a night that was more than just a concert—it was a turning point.

Step back in time. Witness history in the making. And experience the true story behind the concert that defined a generation.

An illuminating exploration of 31 incredible women—across art, architecture, dance, literature, and more—whose culture-defining contributions have, until now, been overshadowed by their role as "muses" to history's better-known men.  What does it mean to be someone's "muse"? Historically, to be called a “muse” among artistic circles has been marketed as a flattering title. It is a commendation that most often refers to a woman whose vivacity and beauty are the source of inspiration for a (usually) male artist or creator. Perhaps her inspiring presence is even credited in the story of his success. But the very concept of a muse underestimates these women and their abilities. At its root, muse is a support role, the title a consolation prize that claims to recognize a woman’s greatness—but only in her support of another.I'm Not Your Muse reclaims the narrative of 31 of these extraordinary women, from "The Mother of the Movies" Alice Guy-Blaché to Modernist designer Eileen Gray, prima ballerina Maria Tallchief, storied Harlem Renaissance editor Jessie Redmon Fauset, and many more. Each of these women advanced the narrative of culture and society, pushing the boundaries of visual arts, dance and movement, commercial architecture, music, journalism, and the performing arts. Whether by historical accident or cruel design, their contributions have historically been overshadowed by those of their male counterparts, and often collaborators. In this briskly written, incisively researched compendium, author and researcher Lori Zimmer repositions these women as the main characters of their own lives. Each profile is accented with original illustrations—including jaunty portraits in playfully constructed frames—by artist Maria Krasinski. Together, they highlight the contemporary accomplishments and historical legacies of a wide-ranging group of revolutionary women. Featured women include: Louise Blanchard Bethune Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore Minnette de Silva Clara Driscoll Jessie Redmon Fauset Loie Fuller Martha Gellhorn    Eileen Gray Belle da Costa Greene Alice Guy-Blaché Miss La La Edmonia Lewis Neysa McMein Hildreth Meière Lucia Moholy May and Jane Morris    Na Hye-Sŏk Fernande Olivier Pan Yuliang    Ethel Reed    Clara Rockmore    Ada Bricktop Smith Maria Tallchief Alice B. The Who's The Who Sell Out

Released in the U.S. in January 1968, The Who Sell Out was, according to critic Dave Marsh, a complete backfire--the album sold well, but not spectacularly [and was] ultimately a nostalgic in-joke: Who but a pop intellectual could appreciate such a thing? Further rarifying its in-joke status was its unapologetic Englishness; 13 tracks stitched together in a mock pirate radio broadcast, without a DJ, with cool, anglocentric commercials to boot. In the 36 years since its release, Sell Out, though still not the best selling release in The Who’s catalog, has been embraced by a growing number of fans who regard it as the band’s best work, one of the few recordings of the late 1960s that best represents the ambitious aesthetic possibilities of the concept album without becoming mired in a bog of smug, self-aggrandizing, high art aspirations. Sell Out, powerfully and ecstatically, articulates the nexus of pop music and pop culture. As much as it is an expression of the band’s expanding sonic palette, Sell Out also functions as a critique of the rock and roll lifestyle. Not the clichéd mantra of sex, drugs, and rock and roll but in the ways that commercial advertising fabricates a youth-oriented cultural reality by hawking pimple cream, deodorant, food, musical equipment, etc., and linking it with rock and roll. In this sense Sell Out is a reflective work, one that struggles with rock and roll as a cultural expression that aspires to aesthetic permanence while marketed as ephemera. From this conflict emerges a pop art masterpiece.
