Summary

World Englishes is a rapidly growing field of study that explores the many ways in which the English language is used around the world. This comprehensive introduction provides a thorough overview of the history, sociolinguistics, and global impact of World Englishes.

In this book, readers will learn about the spread of English across the globe, from its humble beginnings in the British Isles to its current status as the most widely spoken language in the world. They will also explore the role of British colonialism in the expansion of English, as well as the impact of Americanization on the language. The book also discusses the rise of regional Englishes, such as Indian English, Singapore English, and Nigerian English.

The book then turns its attention to the sociolinguistics of World Englishes. It examines variation in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, as well as the role of social class and identity in language variation. It also discusses the impact of globalization on language variation and the challenges of teaching English as a second language.

The book also explores the role of World Englishes in various domains, including education, literature, media, business, law, science and technology, and the arts. It examines the challenges of translating World Englishes texts and the impact of World Englishes on global culture. It also discusses the future of World Englishes and the role it will play in the 21st century.

Finally, the book concludes by discussing the implications of World Englishes for language policy and planning. It considers the challenges of maintaining English language standards in a globalized world and the need for language policies that are inclusive and supportive of linguistic diversity.

With its comprehensive coverage of the history, sociolinguistics, and global impact of World Englishes, this book is an essential resource for students, scholars, and anyone interested in the future of the English language.

A prose translation of the Tao that focuses on bringing out the subtlety and depth of the classic Way.Translations of the famous Way and Virtue (Dao De Jing/Tao Te Ching) focus on the poetics and depth of the original. In contrast, Giles’ translation focuses on telling stories with the text, drawing out the nuances in a way that is more familiar to Western audiences from philosophical and religious texts.“Few can help being struck by the similarity of tone between the sayings of Lao Tzu and the Gospel enunciated six centuries later by the Prince of Peace. There are two famous utterances in particular which secure to Lao Tzu the glory of having anticipated the lofty morality of the Sermon on the Mount. The cavilers who would rank the Golden Rule of Confucius below that of Christ will find it hard to get over the fact that Lao Tzu said, "Requite injury with kindness," and "To the not-good I would be good in order to make them good." It was a hundred and fifty years later that Plato reached the same conclusion in the first book of the Republic. It is interesting to observe certain points of contact between Lao Tzu and the early Greek philosophers. He may be compared both with Parmenides, who disparaged sense-knowledge and taught the existence of the One as opposed to the Many, and with Heraclitus, whose theory of the identity of contraries recalls some of our Sage's paradoxes. But it is when we come to Plato that the most striking parallels occur. It has not escaped notice that something like the Platonic doctrine of ideas is discoverable in the "forms" which Lao Tzu conceives as residing in Tao. But, so far as I know, no one has yet pointed out what a close likeness Tao itself bears to that curious abstraction which Plato calls the Idea of the Good.”

Once you have mastered translating sentences from English into Russian (lesson 6) in the time gap before the English translation, you have won. The words alone will help you in understanding the meaning, but using the mastered complete sentences will help you communicate much better. There is a script to this course available for free download at www.audioacademyeu.eu which will make your activities with the course much more effective. In its introduction, you will find a learning guide along with helpful tips on how to make the lessons more effective and a lesson plan for you to record your learning progress. The Art Of series, edited by Charles Baxter, is a new series of brief books by contemporary writers on an important craft issue. Each book investigates an aspect of the craft of fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry by discussing works by authors past and present. The books in The Art Of series are not strictly manuals, but serve readers and writers by illuminating aspects of the craft of writing that people think they already know but don't really know. The first book in The Art Of series of books on the craft of writing, fiction writer and essayist Charles Baxter's The Art of Subtext discusses and illustrates the hidden subtextual overtones and undertones in fictional works haunted by the unspoken, the suppressed, and the secreted. As Baxter notes in one essay, "A novel is not a summary of its plot but a collection of instances, of luminous specific details that take us in the direction of the unsaid and unseen."Using an array of examples from Melville and Dostoyevsky to contemporary writers Paula Fox, Edward P. Jones, and Lorrie Moore, Baxter explains how fiction writers create those visible and invisible details, how what is displayed evokes what is not displayed.
