Learning from Black voices means listening to more than snippets. It means attending to Black stories. Reading Black Books helps Christians hear and learn from enduring Black voices and stories as captured in classic African American literature.

Pastor and teacher Claude Atcho offers a theological approach to ten seminal texts of twentieth-century African American literature. Each chapter takes up a theological category for inquiry through a close literary reading and theological reflection on a primary literary text, from Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man and Richard Wright's Native Son to Zora Neale Hurston's Moses, Man of the Mountain and James Baldwin's Go Tell It on the Mountain. The book includes end-of-chapter discussion questions.

Reading Black Books helps readers of all backgrounds learn from the contours of Christian faith formed and forged by Black stories, and it spurs continued conversations about racial justice in the church. It demonstrates that reading about Black experience as shown in the literature of great African American writers can guide us toward sharper theological thinking and more faithful living.

Collected by the author over many years, these stories from the yoga and Zen traditions are the flint and steel that strike a spark that lights up the mind with insights that one should ponder daily to bring to light ever deeper meaning. They may be similar in intent to Zen koans - but they are rather different in content.
In many Zen koans, someone says or does something extraordinarily inappropriate, which catches your attention just because it's extraordinary - but afterwards the light from them has to be applied to daily life. In contrast, the stories here are often ordinary incidents from ordinary lives (not that there aren't some extraordinary ones too!) that nevertheless open the mind's eye to the vast potential for realisation and inspiration to be found in daily life.

Colonialism, at its core, refers to the practice of one country establishing control over another, typically by settling its own population and exploiting the resources, labor, and markets of the colonized region. This system of domination, which spans several centuries, began to take on its modern form during the Age of Exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries. However, its roots can be traced back to earlier periods in history, when ancient empires expanded their territories through military conquest, trade, and settlement. Colonialism, as it is most commonly understood today, is a product of European powers' ambition to extend their political and economic influence across the globe.
The motivations for colonial expansion were multifaceted. European nations were driven by the desire for wealth, resources, and new trading routes. The establishment of colonies in foreign lands provided access to valuable commodities such as spices, precious metals, and later, sugar, cotton, and tobacco. Equally important was the drive for prestige, as colonial ventures served to enhance a nation's status on the global stage. Religion, too, played a crucial role; missionaries sought to spread Christianity to indigenous populations, often justifying the subjugation of these peoples in the name of religious salvation.
Technological advancements during the late medieval period enabled European nations to explore and map distant lands. Navigational tools like the compass, the astrolabe, and advances in shipbuilding made transoceanic voyages possible, laying the groundwork for the so-called "Age of Discovery." Figures such as Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, and Ferdinand Magellan were among the first to chart new routes to Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Their voyages marked the beginning of an era in which European powers, armed with superior weaponry and navigational skills, would expand their reach to the furthest corners of the globe.

Doctors at War tells the stories of physicians in France working to impede the German war effort and undermine French collaborators during the Occupation from 1940 to 1945. Determined to defeat the Third Reich's incursion, one group of prominent Paris doctors founded a medical network to treat injured Resistance fighters who they then secretly transported to Allied countries to avoid forced labor in Germany. Another team of medics organized a cabal focused on intelligence gathering and sabotage that became one of the largest in wartime France, even after the Gestapo arrested and imprisoned its leaders. Deported to concentration camps, these physicians continued to frustrate Nazi efforts by rendering aid and keeping their fellow prisoners alive. Others joined rural guerrilla camps to care for the young conscripts fighting to block German reinforcements from reaching Normandy after the D-Day landing.

These stories add a crucial dimension to the history of Occupied France. Written for both historians and general listeners of World War II history, Doctors at War stands as a dramatic, character-driven account of physicians' courage and resilience in the face of evil. It serves as a window into life under a fascist regime and the travails of doctors who negotiated the terrifying moral labyrinth that was the German military's occupation of France.

An honest, humorous, and refreshing look back on the experiences of a unique generation and the challenges of growing older in the digital age.Musings of a Baby Boomer: Life Before X, Y, and Z is a collection of selected shorts from Hoflander’s weekly newspaper column “Full Circle,” featuring sometimes funny and sometimes philosophical stories with a continuous theme: the reluctant, but generally happy, aging of the Baby Boomer generation. In this collection, Hoflander tells stories about everything from yard flamingos and college move-in day to battling internet bots. She reflects on the simpler times of her childhood and addresses present-day changes to which, as a baby boomer, she adapts: memory loss, evolving technology, and politics. Through it all, she uses humor and wit to remind readers not to take life too seriously—and to focus on the things that really matter.“This book entails family, friends, and wisdom from the perspective of the baby boomer generation! A great read for all!
