Summary

In a time of deep division and political turmoil, "United and Divided: True Liberalism and Red State Hypocrisy" offers a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of the true meaning of liberalism and the dangers of Red State conservatism.

Author Pasquale De Marco takes readers on a journey through the history of liberalism, revealing its genuine commitment to equality, justice, and opportunity for all. This is contrasted with the actions of Red State politicians, who claim to uphold these values while actively working against them.

The book exposes the hypocrisy of the Red State's assault on democracy, from voter suppression and gerrymandering to attacks on the media and the judiciary. It delves into the roots of conservative resentment and the role of misinformation and propaganda in fueling division and hate.

"United and Divided" offers a vision of a better America, one that embraces true liberal values and works towards a more just, equitable, and sustainable future. It highlights the power of unity and the need to overcome division, recognizing that progress can only be achieved when we work together.

This book is a call to action, urging readers to stand up against hypocrisy, hate, and division. It is a reminder that liberalism is not just a political ideology; it is a moral imperative, a way of life that values compassion, empathy, and the pursuit of a better world for all.

Join Pasquale De Marco on this journey to reclaim the true meaning of liberalism and build a future where justice, equality, and opportunity prevail for all.

China's military has entered a new era. It has acquired modern weapons to rival the world's finest, undergone a massive restructuring under Xi Jinping, and been on the frontlines of territorial disputes with Japan, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines. It is readying forces to be able to seize Taiwan sometime in the next decade. It aims to be a "world-class" military on par with the United States.

China's Quest for Military Supremacy provides a broad and accessible exploration of Chinese military power, including relations between the Chinese Communist Party and its army, the strategic worldview of Chinese leaders, military strategy and resourcing, conventional and nuclear modernization, military diplomacy and coercion, preparations for war, and the People's Liberation Army's emerging global role. It also identifies the challenges facing China's military and shows how its focus on supremacy in the region means that it is not yet prepared to fight with the same lethality beyond Asia. Different futures are possible, and the book concludes with a preview of what it might take for a truly "world-class" Chinese military to take the global stage.

The United States has become an almost unrecognizable country—with millions in thrall to conspiracy theories, toxic populism, and the far right edging closer to total power—a dire threat to civil society and democratic institutions. While the MAGA movement was in remission due to Donald Trump's defeat in 2020, the fascist fringes have not just survived but have continued to thrive and burrow into the mainstream. The January 6th Capitol Riot prosecutions have done little to curb their enthusiasm for mayhem.

Trump's base in the Republican Party is committed to their candidate like never before. The institutionalization of racist voter suppression and the outdated logic behind the Electoral College means he could take back the White House. Apocalyptic messaging ensures the alt-right, anti-government, anti-LGBT, and white nationalist groups see the next election as a life-or-death struggle and are uniting to back the one person they can all agree on—guaranteeing another chaotic election.

In this chilling exposé, Wendling encounters Capital rioters, Covid deniers, QAnon supporters, and Proud Boys and uncovers the roots of a movement that threatens to shatter the foundations of democracy.

“I feel, when we have no friends upon whom to lean, or to look for moral guidance." (Mussolini)

This audiobook contains over 60 of Mussolini's earlier speeches, covering the years 1914-1923: from soon after his expulsion from the Socialist Party for supporting WWI, to his becoming Prime Minister yet still submitting outwardly to democratic rule. (He seized power, threw off the democratic yoke, and became dictator in 1925-1927.

Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini, born on July 29, 1883, who went by the nickname “Il Duce” (“the Leader”), was a deeply unbalanced tyrannical Italian dictator who created the dreaded Fascist Party in 1919. Eventually, he held all power in Italy as the country’s prime minister from 1922 to 1943. An ardent socialist as a youth, Mussolini followed in his father's political footsteps but was expelled by the party for his overt support of World War I. As an evil dictator during World War II (even murdering his own son by lethal injection) he greatly overextended his forces and was eventually killed by his own people in Mezzegra, Italy. Here, for the first time, are the words of the great dictator himself in his twisted manifesto on the political movement he started and is still so feared to this very day.

'Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism' by Rachel Maddow, inspired by her podcast 'Ultra,' delves into the history of American authoritarianism, particularly focusing on a right-wing movement that emerged before and during World War II. This movement orchestrated a widespread disinformation campaign to weaken the U.S. war effort and align the country with the Axis powers. Maddow uncovers the shocking extent of this campaign, aimed at undermining democracy, promoting antisemitism, and eroding trust in democratic institutions with the end goal of authoritarian takeover.
The book also explores an ultra-right paramilitary group that prepared for mass violence and insurrection. Parallel to these events, a group of activists and journalists worked tirelessly to expose this scheme. In 1941, the U.S. The Department of Justice took action against the conspirators but faced significant challenges, including political interference from influential figures, leading to a failure of the legal system. Maddow argues that this historical event, often overlooked and involving prominent officials, has had long-reaching impacts on American history and remains highly relevant in today's political climate.

In late 2019, Dennis Oya's persistent cough was just the beginning of a harrowing tale of neglect and systemic failure in a Washington prison. Diagnosed eighteen months later with tuberculosis (TB), Oya's case sparked one of the largest prison TB outbreaks in decades, affecting over 3,000 contacts. This outbreak, and others like it, exposes the glaring weaknesses in prison healthcare systems.

In Outbreak Behind Bars, Homer Venters reveals the grim realities of how communicable diseases thrive in the overcrowded, unsanitary conditions of correctional facilities. From TB to Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), these infections spread rapidly due to systemic neglect and inadequate medical responses. The book highlights the stories of those who suffered, the failures in health care provision, and offers specific guidance for public health professionals in conducting investigations and facility inspections during outbreaks behind bars.

With firsthand accounts and expert analysis, this book illustrates the urgent need for reform in prison health care to protect incarcerated people and the wider community. Outbreak Behind Bars is a crucial listen for anyone concerned about justice, public health, and the overlooked plight of incarcerated people, especially students, faculty, and professionals in the field of public health.
