Summary

In They Walked in Berlin, readers are taken on a journey through the vibrant and tumultuous city of Berlin in the 1920s. Through the eyes of Joseph Roth, one of the most renowned journalists of his time, we witness the city's cultural awakening, political upheaval, and descent into darkness.

Roth's essays capture the essence of Berlin in the 1920s, a city pulsating with life and energy. He paints a vivid portrait of the city's streets, its people, and its atmosphere, immersing readers in the city's unique blend of glamour and grit.

But Roth also delves into the city's darker side, exposing the poverty, crime, and political unrest that plagued Berlin in the aftermath of World War I. He chronicles the rise of the Nazi Party, the growing sense of fear and uncertainty, and the erosion of democracy and freedom.

They Walked in Berlin is a powerful and moving account of a city on the brink of change. Roth's essays are a testament to the power of journalism to capture the spirit of a time and place, and they offer a valuable historical document of one of the most important periods in history.

But They Walked in Berlin is more than just a historical record. It is also a work of art, beautifully written and full of insights into the human condition. Roth's essays offer a unique perspective on a city that was at the center of one of the most important periods in history.

They Walked in Berlin is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of Berlin, the Weimar Republic, or the rise of Nazism. It is also a powerful reminder of the importance of fighting for democracy and freedom, even in the darkest of times.

Unlock the hidden rhythms of Russian conversation with A Language Learner’s Guide to Russian Idioms, narrated by Ernest Timkin and crafted by linguist Dana Levina. This audiobook isn’t just about memorizing phrases—it’s a cultural passport, revealing how Russians weave humor, history, and wisdom into everyday speech. Imagine transforming awkward pauses into confident exchanges by knowing when to say someone’s “counting crows” (считать ворон) instead of daydreaming, or calling out empty promises as “noodles hung on ears” (вешать лапшу на уши). Whether you’re a traveler aiming to navigate local markets without getting “led by the nose” (водить за нос), a student tired of “thumbing wooden blocks” (бить баклуши) instead of studying, or a professional striving to “take the bull by the horns” (брать быка за рога) in meetings, these idioms bridge the gap between textbook Russian and authentic dialogue. Each expression unfolds with vivid context: Learn why “walking on heels” (ходить по пятам) means relentless pursuit, how “sitting on needles” (сидеть как на иголках) captures nail-biting anxiety, and when to “keep your ear sharp” (держать ухо востро) in tricky situations. Perfect for learners craving cultural fluency, this guide turns idioms from curiosities into tools, helping you decode films, literature, and casual chats with ease. Dive in—before you know it, you’ll be swapping stale translations for phrases that make Russians lean in and smile. Удачи! (Good luck!)

The Silver Women - How Black...

    Joan Flores-Villalobos

In The Silver Women, Joan Flores-Villalobos argues that Black West Indian women made the Panama Canal construction possible by providing the indispensable everyday labor of social reproduction. West Indian women built a provisioning economy that fed, housed, and cared for the segregated Black West Indian labor force, in effect subsidizing the construction effort and the racial calculus that separated pay in silver for Black workers and gold for white Americans. But while also subject to racial discrimination and segregation, West Indian women mostly worked outside the umbrella of US canal authorities. They did not hold contracts, had little access to official services and wages, and received pay in both silver and gold. From this position, they found ways to skirt, and at times subvert, the legal, moral, and economic parameters imperial authorities sought to impose on the migrant workforce. West Indian women developed important strategies of claims-making, kinship, community building, and market adaptation that helped them navigate the contradictions and violence of the US empire. These strategies of social reproduction nurtured further West Indian migrations, linking Panama to places like Harlem and Santiago de Cuba. The Silver Women is thus a history of Black women's labor of social reproduction as integral to US imperial infrastructure, the global Caribbean diaspora, and women's own survival.

Thelma & Louise, the 1991 film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, has been described as a road movie, a buddy movie, a feminist parable, and only incidentally as a Western. An Oscar winner for first-time screenwriter Callie Khouri, Thelma & Louise catalyzed a national conversation about women, violence, and self-determination in a Hollywood still shrugging off the West of John Wayne and in an America that still viewed women as accessories to the national mythology.

In this latest volume in the Reel West series, Susan Kollin recreates this watershed moment for women's movies in general and women's Westerns in particular.
