Service is much more than a mere act of giving; it is a transformative experience that intertwines our personal growth with the welfare of others. At its core, service is an expression of compassion, empathy, and responsibility. It calls upon us to use our unique gifts to address the needs of our communities and to create an environment where everyone feels valued and supported. When we engage in service, we recognize that our contributions, no matter how small, have the potential to bring about significant change.
Understanding service begins with a deep reflection on our own lives. It requires us to assess our strengths and passions, asking ourselves what we can offer that might alleviate another’s struggle or enhance their quality of life. This process is not solely about what we do for others but also about how these actions enrich our own lives. The act of helping fosters a sense of purpose and fulfillment that can lead to personal development and a more resilient, positive mindset.
Service is also a powerful tool for building community. In a world where isolation and disconnection are increasingly prevalent, acts of service serve as a bridge that connects individuals from diverse backgrounds. Whether it is lending a hand to a neighbor, volunteering for a local charity, or engaging in community projects, each act of service contributes to a larger tapestry of collective well-being. These actions remind us that we are part of a larger whole and that every contribution is vital to the strength and success of our communities.

The day I found Ben swinging from the chandelier, I knew two things - being his mom was going to be a wild ride, and if I ever decided to write a book about it, I had my title. This book started as a way to cope, a reminder to breathe as I raised three boys, including Ben, who was diagnosed with autism at age 2. It tells our story - from experiencing the complex emotions of fear and guilt at hearing the diagnosis, to fighting tooth-and-nail with the school district to get Ben the services he needed. Our journey isn't over yet, but my once-nonverbal, illiterate son is now a public speaker. And this is the story of how - against all odds - he learned to read and write, learned to drive, and eventually got a job. It's the story of how he was voted homecoming king by his high school of 3,000, and how he continued to exceed all our expectations for him.
I have been working on this book for over 10 years. When I first started, it was a way for me to document events, feelings, successes, and missteps while raising our son, Ben, who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at age two. Over time, I realized that the stories of other parents helped me on my own journey, so I hoped my book might do the same for someone else.

Paris, often known as the "City of Light," is renowned for its iconic landmarks, romantic ambiance, and vibrant culture. Yet, beneath its grand boulevards and charming streets, lies an entirely different world—an underground labyrinth that has shaped the city in ways few know or understand. From ancient Roman origins to the modern-day metro system, Paris’s subterranean spaces are a testament to the ingenuity, mystery, and resilience of the city.
The underground world of Paris is not merely a collection of tunnels and chambers; it is a complex network that has served multiple purposes throughout the ages. Some of these spaces were created for practical reasons—such as the quarries that provided building materials for the city's growing skyline—while others evolved into places of mystique and darkness, such as the famous Catacombs, now home to the remains of millions. What began as a means of resource extraction gradually became a vault of history, culture, and secrets.
This book delves into the hidden depths beneath Paris’s streets, exploring the lesser-known aspects of the city's subterranean heritage. It examines the origins of these tunnels, from the Romans who first began to carve through the limestone to the workers who later expanded them into extensive catacombs. It also explores the multifaceted role these spaces have played throughout history: as a refuge during times of war, as a setting for revolutionary movements, and as a sanctuary for those who choose to live outside the city's mainstream society.

When the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991, the Russian Federation and the newly independent republics of the Baltics, the Caucasus and Central Asia engaged in redefining their national identity in a challenging regional and global context. The stances and policies towards the minorities living in these countries became part of the striving towards national independence and identity formation. Despite vastly different post-Soviet nation-building trajectories, the development and implementation of state policies towards minorities had similar relevance and importance across the region. Thirty years after the end of the USSR what is the situation of minorities and minority issues in the countries that emerged from that multi-ethnic state?
How have the former republics – including Russia dealt with their minorities and minority affairs? To what protection and rights are minority communities entitled to? Studies of the dissolution of the USSR and of nation-building in the independent post-Soviet states have flourished over the past decades. However, despite the relevance of the theme, there is a dearth of specialist publications which address the many issues related to minority communities in the post-Soviet space. This volume attempts to fill this gap by providing a collection of essays covering some of the most relevant aspects of the contemporary status and situation of minorities in the area.

Many of the highlanders in Virginias western mountains live in small communities with names such as Stonebruise, Novelty, and Wangle Junction, and here their stories are chronicled by one of their own, Floyd County native and Pulitzer-nominated journalist Rex Bowman, roving reporter for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Colorful characters abound, from folks in Independence who have a decades-old tradition of racing outhouses, to the brawlers in St. Paul who once gave the town a reputation for world-class wickedness, to the purveyors of Roanokes Texas Tavern who have never in seventy years put ketchup on their hamburgers. Blue Ridge Chronicles is a delightful look at how the lively have lived in Southwest Virginias backcountry.
