Sinopse

In this captivating exploration of the realm of colors, we embark on a journey that unveils their significance, symbolism, and impact on our lives.

From the vibrant hues of nature to the man-made colors that adorn our world, color surrounds us in every aspect of life. This book delves into the fascinating world of colors, examining their role in art, science, culture, and human experience.

For centuries, artists have harnessed the power of colors to create masterpieces that evoke emotions, convey messages, and tell stories. We explore how color choices can reveal the artist's personality, style, and cultural context, and how the interplay of colors can create depth, movement, and atmosphere in a work of art.

Beyond the canvas, color plays a vital role in various aspects of human culture and experience. We delve into the symbolic meanings of colors in religious traditions, where they represent divine qualities or spiritual concepts. Color can also convey social status, gender roles, and regional identities. It influences our moods, behaviors, and even our perception of time and space.

Recent scientific advancements have shed new light on the properties and effects of colors. We now understand how colors are produced by the interaction of light with matter, and how our eyes and brains process these signals to create the perception of color. This knowledge has led to advancements in fields such as color theory, color psychology, and color therapy.

This book is an invitation to explore the vast and interconnected tapestry of art, science, culture, and human experience that surrounds us. It offers a deeper understanding of the role colors play in shaping our lives, and invites readers to appreciate the beauty and power of colors in all their forms.

In this landmark collection, William T. Vollmann offers a kaleidoscopic retrospective of the visual artwork he has produced over four decades, with new commentary from Vollmann on his process, inspiration, and the many intersections with his writing.

The celebrated author of over twenty-five books (among them the National Book Award–winning novel Europe Central; the seven-volume Rising Up and Rising Down, based on Vollmann's career as a war correspondent; and the two-volume climate change investigation Carbon Ideologies), Vollmann's equally ambitious and prolific career as a photographer, printmaker, and painter reflects the artist’s deep interest in people existing on the margins, a profound empathy for his subjects, and the humility and generosity to meet them on their terms.

In Shadows of Love, Shadows of Loneliness, a series of essays commissioned especially for this book lays out Vollmann's views on what photographs can and should say, how he chooses what to represent (beauty, suffering, compassion, love, desire, ideology), thoughts on photographic consensuality, and any number of technical descriptions. Particularly useful for Vollmann fans and scholars are the cross-references between these artistic and photographic projects and his books.

How can we interpret the work of contemporary artists? Focal Points is a new book series of essays, articles and reviews by acclaimed curator and critic Robert Storr. Expertly edited by art historian and curator Francesca Pietropaolo, and richly illustrated, it lends Storr’s illuminating insights into an artist’s practice and way of thinking across recent decades. Brilliantly scholarly, accessible and engaging, Focal Points offers fresh interpretations of the varied territory of modern and contemporary art. This second volume considers the work of American abstract painter Ad Reinhardt (1913–1967). Active in New York for over three decades, Reinhardt was part of the group of artists who became known as Abstract Expressionists, and he made work that would prove influential to the younger generation of Minimal and Conceptual artists. He believed in a philosophy of what he called ‘art-as-art’ and used his writing and satirical cartoons to advocate for abstract art. As he famously wrote in 1962: ‘Art is art-as-art and everything else is everything else.’ In this volume, Storr discusses Reinhardt’s painting, his comics, and his slide lecture series or ‘non-happenings, ’ as the artist called them.

'I like eating cold, clammy wraps from big pharmacies that are open late and sell just a few foods like protein bars and powders.' Flower is a book of realistic admissions, likes, dislikes, memories and no-brainer observations, treating personal truth as unavailable - something that must be made up and convincing. Taking cues from confessional literature, his daughter's improvised games, poor internet writing and shitty AI, Ed Atkins, in his first work of non-fiction, equivocates between inanity and divinity, ease and pain, sentimentality and sterility. An anti-memoir, a list, a listless blur - Flower is a highly original, moving and absurd book by one of the most influential artists of his generation, formally inventive and disturbingly of our time.
