Summary

How can we interpret the work of contemporary artists? Focal Points is a new book series of essays, articles and reviews by acclaimed curator and critic Robert Storr. Expertly edited by art historian and curator Francesca Pietropaolo, and richly illustrated, it lends Storr’s illuminating insights into an artist’s practice and way of thinking across recent decades. Brilliantly scholarly, accessible and engaging, Focal Points offers fresh interpretations of the varied territory of modern and contemporary art. This second volume considers the work of American abstract painter Ad Reinhardt (1913–1967). Active in New York for over three decades, Reinhardt was part of the group of artists who became known as Abstract Expressionists, and he made work that would prove influential to the younger generation of Minimal and Conceptual artists. He believed in a philosophy of what he called ‘art-as-art’ and used his writing and satirical cartoons to advocate for abstract art. As he famously wrote in 1962: ‘Art is art-as-art and everything else is everything else.’ In this volume, Storr discusses Reinhardt’s painting, his comics, and his slide lecture series or ‘non-happenings, ’ as the artist called them.

My Turning Point is a quiet, honest walk through the darkest month I’ve ever known, beginning the day Charlie Kirk was killed. This story isn’t about his brand or beliefs; it's about the echo of how we treat each other.
The aftershock, the responses on social media, shook my belief in human decency to the core… and became the fire that forced me to repair and heal.
My Turning Point is one man’s month-long dive into and out of the abyss. What emerged isn’t just an album. It’s the story of personal journey — grief, anger, surrender, reflection, renewal — expressed through song, unbound by genre. It’s the map of descent and repair, a search for what holds when the ground gives way.
If you’ve ever lived through a time that rewrote you — welcome.
If you’re still struggling with the chaos, I hope my personal turning point helps you find yours.

The music of Yes indelibly shaped the original sound of progressive rock. But the true tale of this landmark band goes well beyond headline-making albums like Fragile and Close to the Edge. In this book, Kevin Mulryne tells the absorbing story of the final Yes album of the 1970s, Tormato, uncovering myriad fascinating twists and turns for the first time.
“Tormato was my introduction to the music of the world’s greatest progressive rock band, and I have spent years finding out all I can about it,” explains Kevin. “I have spoken to fans, experts and many of the people who were there during the technical setup of the equipment, the recording of the album, and the creation of the artwork.”
“Along the way, I have learned a great deal about Yes, and the processes, frustrations and triumphs of recording a rock album in the late ‘70s. This is a deep dive into what makes an iconic band tick. I’m sure you will enjoy the journey as much as me!”
So what’s the real deal with Tormato? … Be prepared to be surprised.

For the first time ever, and to help celebrate his 90th birthday in 2023, American icon Willie Nelson provides the stories behind the lyrics of 160 of his favorite songs.
From his earliest work in the 1950s to today, Willie looks back at the songs that have defined his career, from his days of earning $50 each to his biggest hits, from his less well-known songs (but incredibly meaningful to him) to his concept albums. Along the way, he also shares the stories of his guitar Trigger, his family and “family,” as well as the artists he collaborated with, including Patsy Cline, Waylon Jennings, Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Dolly Parton, and many others.
Willie is disarmingly honest—what do you have to lose when you’re about to turn 90? —meditating on the nature of songwriting and finding his voice, and the themes he’s explored his whole life—relationships, infidelity, love, loss, friendship, life on the road, and particularly poignant at this juncture of his life: mortality.
Revealing, funny, whimsical, and wise, this book is an enduring tribute to Willie Nelson's legacy.
