Summary

In this captivating exploration of patterns, we embark on a journey to uncover the hidden order that shapes our universe. From the intricate designs of nature to the complex rhythms of human behavior, patterns are everywhere, waiting to be discovered.

With a keen eye for detail and a passion for understanding the world around us, this book delves into the science of patterns, revealing the underlying principles that govern their formation and behavior. We will explore the different types of patterns, from simple geometric shapes to complex fractals, and examine their role in various fields, including mathematics, physics, biology, psychology, and computer science.

But patterns are not just abstract concepts; they are deeply ingrained in our own minds and consciousness. Our brains are constantly seeking out and imposing patterns on the world around us, helping us to perceive order and meaning in a seemingly chaotic universe. This innate ability to recognize and create patterns is a defining characteristic of human intelligence and creativity.

Throughout history, humans have been captivated by patterns, finding inspiration and beauty in their intricate designs. From the earliest cave paintings to the latest works of modern art, patterns have served as a powerful means of expression and communication. By studying patterns, we can gain a deeper understanding of human culture, history, and psychology.

More than just a theoretical exploration, this book also showcases the practical applications of patterns. We will see how patterns can be used to solve problems, generate new ideas, and enhance our understanding of the world. From the development of new technologies to the creation of beautiful works of art, patterns play a vital role in driving innovation and creativity.

As we delve deeper into the world of patterns, we will discover that they are not merely external phenomena but fundamental building blocks of reality. They are the underlying order that gives structure to our universe and allows us to make sense of our experiences. By embracing patterns, we can unlock hidden knowledge, gain new perspectives, and ultimately deepen our appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things.

The tank was first developed by the British and French during World War I as a means to break the deadlock on the Western Front. More so than any previous war, the balance of power lay with the defense, as machine guns, trenches, bunkers, barbed wire, and rapid-firing rifles all made frontal assaults on established positions prohibitively costly. In the closing months of the war, the tank partially evened up that balance, even as the war’s commanders initially proved unsure of how to use them. While it cannot be said that the tank won the war, it contributed to its end and if the fighting had continued another year, the mass production that had started in Allied countries may have proved decisive.
World War II was the culmination of a quarter century of tank development, and it would also be the first major test of tanks in mobile warfare during which they had to face other tanks. However, many of the tanks were constructed with the static warfare of the Western Front in mind and were thus slow and had short operational ranges. Others were too light to face opposing tanks or the new generation of anti-tank weapons that hadn’t existed in World War I. The unsuitability of these tank models for this new kind of warfare was quickly recognized, and the belligerent powers scrambled to create better designs. As each new, improved model came off the assembly lines, the opposing powers rushed to create a tank that could beat it. In that regard, World War II was also a war between rival engineers.
The beginning of World War II found the major powers developing tanks to some extent, but lingering ideas from World War I affected the development of tanks during the Interwar period.

Mysteries of the Social Brain describes the scientific underpinnings of human behavior and values. Through the retelling of fascinating clinical stories of people with neurological conditions, this book explores the parts of the brain that allow humans to thrive as social and creative beings. The authors reveal the relevance of our brain circuits to our well‑being―and the well‑being of our societies―and show what happens when changes in our brain circuitry drive changes in empathy, altruism, moral beliefs, and creativity.

By integrating perspectives from neurology, psychology, psychiatry, and neuroscience, the stories in this book offer novel insights into the inner workings of the social brain and reveal groundbreaking findings from work in frontotemporal dementia, emotion, and the science of human values. This book showcases the discovery that creativity can emerge when there is decline in the brain’s language systems, a finding that highlights the robust, yet underappreciated connections between science and art. Listeners will learn about the biological basis of social behavior as well as simple steps that they can take to improve the functioning of their own social brains.

This book will captivate general listeners as well as clinicians and scientists who are interested in human social behavior, cognition, and emotion.

Understanding the context of terrorism requires a trek through history, in this case the history of terrorist activity in the United States since the Civil War. Because the topic is large and complex, Terrorists Attacks on American Soil: From the Civil War to the Present does not claim to be an exhaustive history of terrorism or the definitive account of how and why terrorists do what they do. Instead, this book takes a representative sampling of the most horrific terrorist attacks on U.S. soil in an effort to understand the context in which they occurred and the lessons that can be learned from these events.
