The Jacobins and Girondins were two of the most influential political factions during the French Revolution, each representing different visions for the future of France. Their rivalry played a significant role in shaping revolutionary politics and ultimately led to the radicalization of the movement. While both groups initially sought to overthrow the monarchy and establish a republic, their ideological differences and approaches to governance placed them on a collision course.
The Jacobins emerged as a radical force advocating for centralized power, direct democracy, and the use of revolutionary violence to achieve their goals. They were named after their meeting place, the Jacobin Club, a former Dominican convent in Paris. The Jacobins attracted members who believed in strong government control, economic regulation, and the direct involvement of the lower classes in politics. They were heavily influenced by Enlightenment ideals, particularly the belief in equality and the general will of the people, as expressed by philosophers like Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The most prominent Jacobin leaders, including Maximilien Robespierre, Georges Danton, and Jean-Paul Marat, pushed for radical reforms such as the execution of King Louis XVI and the implementation of policies that favored the common people.
In contrast, the Girondins represented a more moderate and decentralized vision of the revolution. Many of their members came from the Gironde region, giving the faction its name, and they were often associated with the provincial bourgeoisie. The Girondins supported a constitutional monarchy in the early stages of the revolution but later advocated for a republican form of government with more power distributed among local authorities rather than concentrated in Paris.

NAACP Image Award Nominee · NPR Best Book of 2022
A searing memoir of American racism from a Somalian-American who survived hardships in his birth country only to experience firsthand the dehumanization of Blacks in his adopted land, the United States.
“No one told me about America.”
Born in Somalia and raised in a valley among nomads, Boyah Farah grew up with a code of male bravado that helped him survive deprivation, disease, and civil war. Arriving in America, he believed that the code that had saved him would help him succeed in this new country. But instead of safety and freedom, Boyah found systemic racism, police brutality, and intense prejudice in all areas of life, including the workplace. He learned firsthand not only what it meant to be an African in America, but what it means to be African American. The code of masculinity that shaped generations of men in his family could not prepare Farah for the painful realities of life in the United States.
Lyrical yet unsparing, America Made Me a Black Man is the first book-length examination of American racism from an African outsider’s perspective. With a singular poetic voice brimming with imagery, Boyah challenges us to face difficult truths about the destructive forces that threaten Black lives and attempts to heal a fracture in Black men’s identity.

    On Drugs - Psychedelics...

“Like the best psychedelic experiences, On Drugs estranges the familiar, familiarizes the strange, and returns us to reality (whatever that is) with a broadened sense of the possible. Justin Smith-Ruiu is simply one of the most interesting thinkers alive, and he has found an ideal subject for his peculiar brand of brilliance.”—Christopher Beha, author of The Index of Self-Destructive Acts

In the late, post-lockdown days of the pandemic, grappling with personal loss and existential uncertainty, Justin Smith-Ruiu found himself standing in a California cannabis dispensary, pondering a question his tribe of fellow philosophers have often dismissed as too simple: How did I get here? That moment marked a transition for him—it was the start of a journey Smith-Ruiu would take to experience his own mind and the world around him in a new, clarifying way.

On Drugs blends autobiography, intellectual history, and philosophical inquiry to explore the transformative impact of psychedelics on human consciousness and thought. Drawing on his personal experiences as “an articulate guinea pig,” Smith-Ruiu argues that psychedelics upend our assumptions about the nature of reality—and thus force a reckoning with the very foundations of Western philosophy.

Provocative, profound, and deeply personal, On Drugs points toward a radically new way of thinking about the world and our capacity to understand it.

‘Pembrokeshire’s Past’ vividly and unforgettably brings to life the boisterous and turbulent history of this little-known Welsh peninsula jutting out into the Irish Sea. The book is a fascinating and unforgettable read. A great glacier overrode the mountains in the north and produced the blue stones of Stonehenge. Upper Palaeolithic mammoth hunters sheltered in limestone caves. As the climate warmed, Mesolithic people were followed by Neolithic people who left their spectacular stone burial chambers. Rising sea levels produced sunken forests around the coast. Bronze Age people left stone circles and burial mounds. Iron Age Celtic settlers left many hill forts. Turbulence followed with Roman, Irish, Viking and Norman invasions. The latter left the great stone castles. The Civil War was strongly contested. Lord Palmerston built many forts in the south. A great naval shipbuilding yard operated in Pembroke Dock. For beach walkers, the flora and fauna from the Amazon and Caribbean that wash ashore are described in all their remarkable and colourful detail.
