Summary

In the heart of Southern California, where dreams are made and stars are born, lies a lesser-known story of resilience, struggle, and triumph—the story of Black Los Angeles. This book takes readers on a captivating journey through the African American experience in the City of Angels, from the early 20th century to the present day.

From the first African American settlers who arrived in the early 1900s, seeking refuge from the oppressive Jim Crow South, to the vibrant cultural expressions of the Harlem Renaissance that found a new home on the West Coast, this book delves into the rich history of Black Los Angeles. We witness the community's resilience in the face of adversity, its unwavering determination to fight for equality and justice, and its profound contributions to the city's cultural fabric.

Through the eyes of ordinary people and extraordinary leaders, we explore the everyday realities of Black Angelenos. We walk the segregated streets, attend vibrant churches and bustling businesses, and witness the struggles for civil rights and social justice. We celebrate the triumphs and mourn the tragedies, gaining a deeper understanding of the Black experience in Los Angeles, both past and present.

This book is not just a history; it is a celebration of the resilience, creativity, and determination of the African American community in Los Angeles. It is a testament to the power of community, the importance of fighting for justice, and the enduring legacy of a people who have shaped the city in profound ways.

As we turn the pages of this book, we are inspired by the stories of those who came before us, those who paved the way for a more just and equitable Los Angeles. Their struggles and triumphs are a reminder that the fight for equality is never truly over, but that with perseverance and unity, we can create a better future for all.

Join us on this journey through time, to learn about the rich history of Black Los Angeles and to be inspired by the stories of the men and women who have made this city their home.

In late November 1942, Soviet forces surrounded Paulus' Sixth Army in a pocket outside the Russian city of Stalingrad. In response the Germans planned a relief operation, Operation Winter Storm, intended to break through the Soviet forces and open the pocket, releasing the encircled units. The 6th Panzer Division was the spearhead of the German relief force.

The attack started on December 12th, 1942 and was aborted on December 23rd after heavy Soviet counterattacks. This failure sealed the fate of the German 6th Army in Stalingrad.

This account of the operation was first published in German in 1961, written by the well-respected military historian and retired German officer, Schiebert Horst. It covers the entire operation from the situation in mid-November through the two German offensives, the Soviet counteroffensive and ongoing fighting until early January.

What was happening elsewhere in the world when Robert the Bruce was outlawed and Mary Queen of Scots lost her head? When Genghis Khan was on the warpath and Ivan the Terrible was the Russian czar, what was happening in Scotland? Find the answers to these questions in 2,000 years of Scottish history presented alongside what was happening in the rest of the world.
By placing events in Scotland in relation to those elsewhere, we can see what is different or distinctive about Scotland's experience. Simultaneously we can also see where movements in Scottish history were part of wider cultural or political change in Europe and beyond. John Knox's fiery sermons of the 1560s were connected into a wider Protestant Reformation, but they also represented a singularly Scottish version of a European phenomenon.
Connecting Scotland's History also gives us a history of 'many Scotlands'. We see the hybrid nature of a country where multiple peoples have come together in a distinctively Scottish mixture. From the Gaels, Picts and Norse people to more recent influxes from England, Ireland, continental Europe and beyond, Scotland's history tells us of internal connections as well as connections between Scotland and the wider world.

On Account of Sex - Ruth Bader...

Before she became the "Notorious R.B.G." famous for her passionate dissents while serving as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg made her most significant contributions as a lawyer who litigated cases on gender equality before the high court in the 1970s. Beginning with Reed v. Reed (1971)—for which Ginsburg wrote her first full Supreme Court brief, and which was the first time the Court held a sex-based classification to be unconstitutional—Ginsburg became known for her work on the issue of gender equality. Ginsburg established the Women's Rights Project at the ACLU in 1972 and coedited the first law school casebook on sex discrimination as a professor at Columbia Law School.

Drawing on interviews with RBG and those who knew her, as well as extensive knowledge of the cases themselves, Philippa Strum has provided a legal history of Ginsburg's landmark litigation on behalf of women's rights and gender equality. Those cases changed the meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment and, along with two Supreme Court cases of the 1980s and 1990s (Mississippi v. Hogan and United States v. Virginia), remain the foundation of constitutional gender jurisprudence today. On Account of Sex shows why RBG became the rock star of the legal world and gives listeners an accessible guide to these widely forgotten but momentous decisions.
