Spirito libero e indipendente, era un avido lettore soprattutto delle opere di Marx, Darwin, Hugo, Gorkij, Tolstoj, Zola e Dante. Nel 1916 guidò uno sciopero contro la Plymouth e per questo motivo nessuno volle più dargli un lavoro. Più tardi, nel 1919, si mise in proprio facendo il pescivendolo fino al momento dell'arresto.
