Summary

In The Incarcerated Psyche: Mental Bodies in a Carceral Society, Pasquale De Marco offers a searing indictment of the American carceral state and its devastating impact on the mental health of those caught in its web. With rigorous research and powerful storytelling, Pasquale De Marco exposes the hidden human toll of mass incarceration, revealing the ways in which the prison system perpetuates cycles of trauma and suffering.

Drawing on extensive interviews with incarcerated individuals, their families, and mental health experts, Pasquale De Marco delves into the depths of the prison experience, shedding light on the profound psychological consequences of confinement. The book exposes the rampant neglect and abuse that occur within prison walls, including the widespread use of solitary confinement, a form of torture that has been linked to severe mental health problems.

The Incarcerated Psyche also examines the systemic factors that contribute to the over-incarceration of people with mental illness. Pasquale De Marco argues that the criminalization of poverty, racism, and ableism has created a revolving door between the streets and the prison system, trapping countless individuals in a cycle of despair.

This book is not only a powerful exposé of the American prison system, but also a call to action for transformative justice. Pasquale De Marco offers a vision for a more just and humane society, one that prioritizes treatment and rehabilitation over punishment and incarceration. The Incarcerated Psyche is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand the mental health crisis in America and the urgent need for prison reform.

When The Case for Animal Rights was published in 1983 it rapidly became an acknowledged classic of moral philosophy, and its author, Tom Regan (1938–2017), was recognized as an intellectual leader within the animal rights movement. Twenty years later, Case was reissued with a new and fully considered preface, in which Regan responded to his critics and defended the book's revolutionary position. Now, forty years after its original publication, this foundational text is available as an audiobook. In addition to the complete text of the revised 2002 edition, the audiobook includes a recording made by Tom Regan in 2001, in which he reflects on why he wrote The Case for Animal Rights, how it compares with Peter Singer's Animal Liberation, and how his thinking evolved as he was writing the book. The audiobook also features an essay by philosopher Gary Comstock on Tom Regan's contribution to, and place within, the history of thinking about our obligations to nonhuman animals over the last half-century.
The audiobook of The Case for Animal Rights is a production of the Culture & Animals Foundation, a nonprofit co-founded by Tom Regan in 1985. Both the book and the e-book of Case are available from the University of California Press.
"Unquestionably the best work yet to appear in its field, surpassing even Peter Singer's famous Animal Liberation in originality, thoroughness, and rigor."—Choice
"The Case for Animal Rights is beyond question the most important philosophical contribution to animal rights and is a major work in moral philosophy."—Animal Law Review

Ronald Reagan hosted the General Electric Theater TV series which ran from 1953 to 1962. During this time Reagan visited GE’s 135 plants across the country and spoke to audiences of GE’s 250,000 employees. Reagan’s speech focused on the growing power of federal, state, and local governments and the dangers this posed to free market competition and to American liberty. Over the years Reagan continually refined and improved what came to be known as “The Speech”.
Reagan was asked to record a version of his speech to be used to support the presidential campaign of Barry Goldwater during the 1964 presidential campaign. The speech, entitled “A Time for Choosing”, was presented to a national television audience on October 27, 1964, as part of a program titled Rendezvous with Destiny.
David Broder of the Washington Post said the speech was "the most successful national political debut since William Jennings Bryan electrified the 1896 Democratic Convention with his 'Cross of Gold' speech." Following the speech, Reagan was elected Governor of California in 1966. This speech launched Reagan’s career on the national stage and contributed to his reputation as “the Great Communicator”.

A searing chronicle of ambition, brutality, and collapse, Broken Supremacy: The Rise and Fall of the Wehrmacht in Russia reveals the untold dimensions of the most catastrophic military campaign in modern history.
At the height of its power, the Wehrmacht was celebrated as an unstoppable force, an army honed on lightning victories, driven by a doctrine of speed and annihilation. Yet on the vast, unforgiving battlefields of the Eastern Front, that supremacy was shattered. This groundbreaking work peels back the myths to expose the flawed strategies, fatal hubris, and relentless resistance that led to the Wehrmacht’s disintegration against the Soviet war machine.
Drawing on newly unearthed archives, soldiers’ testimonies, and penetrating analysis, the book traces the Wehrmacht’s trajectory from its initial triumphs in 1941 to its devastating reversals at Stalingrad, Kursk, and beyond. It examines the interplay between ideology and strategy, the limitations of military innovation, and the human toll of a conflict that claimed millions of lives. More than a military history, it is an unflinching portrait of a regime’s overreach and the resilience of those who resisted it.
Written with cinematic immediacy and scholarly authority, Broken Supremacy illuminates how the Wehrmacht’s rise carried the seeds of its downfall, and why its defeat in Russia sealed the fate of Nazi Germany itself.

A rare opportunity—private music lessons with my professor.
His teaching methods are unconventional. He stands behind me, arms wrapped around my frail body while he guides my trembling fingers. The tight chastity cage in my underwear is a constant reminder of what we’ve done…
To become skilled, he says I need to become one with the instrument. I need to let his music flow into my brain.
    Becoming the instrument…becoming an object.
Flutes don’t think. They just sit with an open hole, waiting for a man to breathe inside.
