Summary

In the annals of American history, few conflicts have been as dramatic and consequential as the Bank War. This epic struggle between President Andrew Jackson and the Second Bank of the United States raged for years, leaving an indelible mark on the nation's politics, economy, and society.

At the heart of the conflict was Jackson's deep-seated distrust of the Bank. He viewed it as a symbol of elitism and corruption, an institution that wielded undue influence over the lives of ordinary Americans. The Bank, on the other hand, was a powerful institution with a strong base of support among wealthy merchants, bankers, and industrialists. Its defenders argued that it was essential for maintaining a stable financial system and promoting economic growth.

The clash between Jackson and the Bank came to a head in 1832, when the Bank's charter came up for renewal. Jackson vetoed the renewal bill, setting the stage for a showdown with the Bank's supporters in Congress. The Bank's president, Nicholas Biddle, launched a massive campaign to pressure Jackson into changing his mind. He contracted the Bank's loans, causing a financial panic. He also mobilized the Bank's allies in Congress to pass a resolution censuring Jackson.

Jackson responded with defiance. He ordered the removal of federal deposits from the Bank and placed them in state banks. He also used his veto power to block legislation that would have helped the Bank. The Bank War raged on for several more years, eventually leading to the Bank's demise in 1836.

The Bank War was a watershed moment in American history. It marked the end of the era of central banking in the United States and ushered in a period of decentralized banking that would last for decades. It also left a deep scar on American politics, dividing the country along regional and class lines. The legacy of the Bank War continues to be debated today, with some historians arguing that it was a necessary step in the development of American democracy, while others believe that it was a reckless and destructive conflict that had lasting negative consequences for the American economy.

This book tells the story of the Bank War in vivid detail, drawing on a wealth of primary sources to bring this tumultuous period in American history to life. It is a story of power, greed, and political intrigue, a story that offers valuable lessons for understanding the American political system and the challenges it faces today.

Jim Lindsay's The Sniper reveals, for the first time ever, the full story of the deadliest sniper in Marine Corps history, Chuck Mawhinney, who served in the Vietnam war at age 18—written with his full cooperation and participation.Charles "Chuck" Mawhinney is a United States Marine who holds the Corps' record for the most confirmed sniper kills (and the second most of any US service member in history), having recorded 103 confirmed kills in 16 months during the Vietnam War. He was also the youngest—killing the enemy as a teenager. In 1967, at the age of 18, Mawhinney joined the Marines and began his assent from recruit to the Marine Corps’ deadliest sniper. During his tours—in one of the most dangerous war zones of Vietnam—his character and charisma helped him deal with life and death in a hell hole with other young men a long way from home. After Vietnam, Mawhinney married and settled into his post-war life, raised a family, and was content that no one knew of his accomplishments in war. Then in 1991 he was startled and dismayed when outed by a fellow Marine sniper, Joseph Ward, who spoke of Mawhinney’s number of kills in his book, Dear Mom. Newspapers picked up the story and Mawhinney’s life changed forever. The notoriety troubled him at first, but then he accepted the fame and used the opportunity to train service men and lawmen in the art of long-distance shooting. At last, Chuck's full story is told, including his heroic exploits in battle and the terrible toll that taking a life exerts on a human being.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

Gen. David McMurtrie Gregg (1833–1917) was one of the ablest and most successful commanders of cavalry in any Civil War army. Pennsylvania-born, West Point–educated, and deeply experienced in cavalry operations prior to the conflict, his career personified that of the typical cavalry officer in the mid-nineteenth-century American army. Gregg achieved distinction on many battlefields, ultimately gaining the rank of brevet major general as leader of the Second Division, Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac.

The highlight of his service occurred on July 3, 1863, the climactic third day at Gettysburg, when he led his own command as well as the brigade of Brig. Gen. George Armstrong Custer in repulsing an attempt by thousands of Confederate cavalries under the legendary J. E. B. Stuart in attacking the right flank and rear of the Union Army while Pickett's charge struck its front and center.

Historians credit Gregg with helping preserve the security of his army at a critical point, making Union victory inevitable. Unlike glory-hunters such as Custer and Stuart, Gregg was a quietly competent veteran who never promoted himself or sought personal recognition for his service. Rarely has a military commander of such distinction been denied a biographer's tribute. Gregg's time is long overdue.
