Summary

In this thought-provoking and wide-ranging book, Pasquale De Marco takes us on a journey to explore the enigma of morality. Drawing on insights from philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and evolutionary biology, Pasquale De Marco offers a comprehensive and accessible account of the nature of morality and its role in our lives.

Pasquale De Marco begins by examining the evolutionary roots of morality, arguing that our moral sense is a product of natural selection. He then explores the biological basis of right and wrong, showing how our brains are wired to make moral judgments. He also discusses the role of culture and society in shaping our moral values, and the development of moral reasoning in children.

Pasquale De Marco then turns his attention to some of the most pressing ethical dilemmas of our time, including the challenges of climate change, the ethical implications of artificial intelligence, and the future of warfare. He also explores the role of morality in our personal lives, examining the importance of moral autonomy, the pursuit of moral perfection, and the struggle against moral failure.

Throughout the book, Pasquale De Marco draws on a wealth of real-world examples to illustrate his arguments. He also engages with the work of leading moral philosophers and thinkers, past and present. The result is a book that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply relevant to our lives today.

Whether you are a philosopher, a scientist, a policymaker, or simply someone who is interested in the big questions of life, this book is essential reading. It will challenge your assumptions about morality and leave you with a new understanding of the human condition.

About empty thrones, a lot can be said. Throughout history, both ancient and near modern, a lack of an heir and the sudden death of a beloved monarch always meant trouble. When the position of a king is up for grabs, a lot of eager hands come forward. Pretenders and would-be heirs, cousins and nephews, bastard sons and daughters - they all came forward staking their claim to the throne. In the history of Medieval England, such episodes were many. Usurpers who oust kings and heirs, pretenders with long-forgotten dynastic claims: many once fought for the lucrative throne of the English Kingdom. However, by far the most important of all these historic episodes lasted from 1455 to 1487 - 32 long years of struggle and bloodshed in England. And that episode was known as the Wars of the Roses. These wars ravaged England, pitting two competing cadet families of the royal House of Plantagenet - York, and Lancaster. Their supporters, the Lancastrians and Yorkists, descended into bitter warfare over the throne. For their symbols they took red and white roses, respectively - thus giving the name to the conflict.

The history of India is filled with tales of powerful warrior empires that shaped the destiny of the subcontinent. Among them, the Hoysala Empire, the Rashtrakuta Empire, and the Kakatiya Dynasty stood as formidable forces in the Deccan region, each leaving behind a unique legacy of conquest, governance, and cultural patronage.
The Rashtrakutas, known for their military might, expanded their rule across vast territories, engaging in wars with the Pratiharas and Palas while fostering art and architecture, as seen in the magnificent Kailasanatha temple at Ellora.
The Hoysalas, emerging later, were fierce warriors and master builders, commissioning iconic temples such as those at Belur and Halebidu while defending their kingdom against rival invasions.
The Kakatiya Dynasty, renowned for its defensive strategies, constructed impressive fortifications like the Warangal Fort and resisted repeated invasions, including those from the Delhi Sultanate.
These warrior empires not only fought to expand and defend their territories but also enriched Indian culture, trade, and architecture, leaving an enduring impact on the history of the Deccan.

It has been a century since the massacre at Jallianwala Bagh, but Punjab is still to recover from the shock of it. The British Empire never did either-the impact of those bullets fired for ten minutes at an unarmed, peaceful crowd inside a community park with one narrow exit rang through its remaining years in India. Yet, the true horror of the event itself has been forgotten, as also the volatile atmosphere in Punjab at the time.
What was the catalyst for the events of that day and how did it become a turning point in India's struggle for independence? Why did the British feel the need to impose martial law on Amritsar, which had shown little inclination for violence, despite provocation? What do we know about the individuals whose lives spun out of control on 19 April 1919, never to recover? Why did the people of Punjab suffer barbaric punishments, including public flogging, torture and even bombing, unknown to the rest of the world?
These are the questions fuelling the research that eventually gave shape to this meticulous and determined reconstruction of that crucial day, and the events which followed. Based on the reports of the Hunter Committee and the Indian National Congress, as well as other historical documents, Jallianwala Bagh, 1919: The Real Story provides a sharp analysis of General Dyer's actions and their fallout-the official narrative and the Indian counter-narratives.
