Summary

In this thought-provoking and wide-ranging book, Pasquale De Marco takes a critical look at the American empire, its history, its present, and its future.

From its humble beginnings as a collection of thirteen colonies on the eastern coast of North America, the United States has grown into a vast and powerful nation that spans a continent and projects its power across the globe. Its military might is unrivaled, its economy is the largest and most dynamic in the world, and its culture and values have permeated every corner of the earth.

The American empire has been a force for both good and ill in the world. On the one hand, it has helped to spread democracy, human rights, and economic prosperity around the globe. On the other hand, it has also been responsible for war, oppression, and exploitation.

Pasquale De Marco argues that the American empire is at a crossroads. It can continue on its current path, which will likely lead to further conflict and instability in the world. Or it can choose a different path, one that is based on cooperation, diplomacy, and respect for international law.

The future of the American empire is uncertain, but it is clear that it will continue to play a major role in shaping the world for many years to come. This book is a timely and essential read for anyone who wants to understand the American empire and its impact on the world.

Pasquale De Marco is a renowned historian and political commentator. He has written extensively about the American empire and its role in the world. His work has been praised for its clarity, its insight, and its provocative nature.

This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the American empire and its impact on the world. It is a timely and important book that will spark debate and discussion for years to come.

Throughout history philosophers have sought to define, understand, and delineate concepts important to human well-being. One such concept is knowledge. Many philosophers believed that absolute, certain knowledge, is possible—that the physical world and ideas formulated about it could be given solid foundation unaffected by the varieties of mere opinion.

Sextus Empiricus stands as an example of the skeptic school of thought whose members believed that knowledge was either unattainable or, if a genuine possibility, the conditions necessary to achieve it were next to impossible to satisfy. In other words, in the absence of complete knowledge, one must make do with the information provided by an imperfect world and conveyed to the mind through sense impressions that can often deceive us. Throughout his life Sextus Empiricus entered into intellectual combat with those who confidently claimed to possess indubitable knowledge. For skeptics, the best one can hope to achieve is a reasonable suspension of judgment—remaining ever mindful that claims to knowledge require careful scrutiny, thoughtful analysis, and critical review if we are to prevent ourselves and others from plunging headlong into mistaken notions.

August 25, 1943. A lone bicyclist transports a cache of explosives, hidden in a beer crate, to a Copenhagen hall being readied to house German troops. In a violent blast, the would-be barracks is reduced to rubble. It's the boldest act yet of Holger Danske and the growing Danish resistance combating the oppressiveness of Hitler's Reich.

In 1940, on its way to conquering Western Europe, Germany coerced the Danish government into a "cooperative" agreement that lasted three long years until the increasing brazenness of the Resistance movement prompted a crackdown. Denmark's nearly 8000 Jews, who had so far been spared Hitler's wrath, now became the focus of his rage. A roundup was ordered to begin on October 1st, 1943, the first day of the Jewish New Year.

The only passage to safety was across the Oresund to Sweden. But no group existed to organize an escape. Until the last moment, Sweden didn’t agree to allow the refugees into the country; and the strait between the two nations was swarming with Gestapo. What happened next was a miracle. 95% of Denmark's Jews survived the Holocaust, the highest percentage in Europe. Here are the riveting true accounts of ordinary Danes who, using their modest resources, wiles, remarkable courage, and camaraderie, quietly orchestrated their escape.

Few events have had a greater impact on human history than the ascension to power of the Nazi Party in Germany in January 1933. This was no coup: the party gained some power via democratic elections, although once it was established, it quickly took absolute control over all aspects of the state. Other parties were outlawed, and further elections were deemed “unnecessary.”
However, Germany’s image as a nation united under one man and committed to expansion through the application of science and technology was in reality an illusion. Nazi Germany was wracked by internal dissent, a chaotic system of rule and a leader who was willing to ignore the economic and resource needs of his nation. By the end of 1941, Germany appeared to be unassailable. Most of its European enemies had either been defeated or seemed to be on the point of defeat. The almost unbroken string of spectacular successes enjoyed by the German Army and air force suggested to many that these were simply unbeatable. Within less than four years, Germany had been utterly defeated, Hitler was dead and Germany itself was occupied by foreign armies.
The factors that led to this sudden and complete collapse had been present from the very beginning of the Nazi regime, but they had been hidden by early success in the face of uncertain and vacillating adversaries. In retrospect, we can clearly see that the fall of the Third Reich was probably inevitable, though it would shake Europe to its foundations, bring about an entirely new world order, and involve the deaths of tens of millions of people.
