Sinopsis

**The Crucible of Democracy** explores the challenges facing American democracy and discusses ways to strengthen our democracy and make it more responsive to the needs of the people.

In recent years, American democracy has been under pressure. Political polarization has made it difficult for the government to address the needs of the people. The rise of inequality has led to a decline in trust in government. And the influence of money in politics has made it difficult for ordinary citizens to have a say in how the country is run.

Despite these challenges, democracy remains the best system of government that we have. It is a system that is founded on the belief that all people are created equal and that they have the right to a say in how they are governed. It is a system that is designed to protect the rights of all citizens and to ensure that the government is accountable to the people.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the American political system. It examines the history of American democracy and the key principles on which it is founded. It also discusses the structure of the American government and the role of the three branches of government.

The book also explores the challenges facing American democracy in greater depth. It discusses the impact of political polarization, inequality, and money in politics. It also examines the role of the media and the impact of social media on American democracy.

The book concludes with a discussion of ways to strengthen American democracy. It argues that we need to promote civic engagement, reduce the influence of money in politics, and reform our electoral system. It also argues that we need to address the underlying causes of political polarization and inequality.

**The Crucible of Democracy** is an essential read for anyone who wants to understand the challenges facing American democracy and who wants to take action to strengthen our democracy and make it more responsive to the needs of the people.

    The Black Sea - poems

In this third collection of poems Papadopoulos addresses the historical subject of the Pontic Greek massacre in the 1920’s in a series of “sonnet-monologues” that link cinematically to create a very specific, semi-fictional account of a group of people living within this particular historic context.  His own  Greek family is of Pontic and Cretan origin, and he traveled the black sea extensively while writing these poems, but the abstracted landscapes and the slightly “grotesque” characters that inhabit these poems lead anyone, regardless of his/her knowledge of the region,  into a new and intimate relationship with this volatile and tragic story.
"The Black Sea won’t be for everyone. The subject is unrelentingly dark, rarely leavened by humor, and the history involved is known to few Americans. But it is a superb book, ambitious without being verbose. His opening poem meditates on the role of the poet in history, and in this subject alone he has plenty of company among Greek writers like Cavafy and Ritsos. The texture of cultural allusion in some of these poems is quite rich, yet the book dispenses with footnotes and leaves us to find our own way. Most of the poems can be read as little dramas in which vital characters have everything at stake. " David Mason, The Hudson Review

How today's unjust global order is shaped by uncertain expert knowledge—and how to fix itA World of Struggle reveals the role of expert knowledge in our political and economic life. As politicians, citizens, and experts engage one another on a technocratic terrain of irresolvable argument and uncertain knowledge, a world of astonishing inequality and injustice is born.In this provocative book, David Kennedy draws on his experience working with international lawyers, human rights advocates, policy professionals, economic development specialists, military lawyers, and humanitarian strategists to provide a unique insider's perspective on the complexities of global governance. He describes the conflicts, unexamined assumptions, and assertions of power and entitlement that lie at the center of expert rule. Kennedy explores the history of intellectual innovation by which experts developed a sophisticated legal vocabulary for global management strangely detached from its distributive consequences. At the center of expert rule is struggle: myriad everyday disputes in which expertise drifts free of its moorings in analytic rigor and observable fact. He proposes tools to model and contest expert work and concludes with an in-depth examination of modern law in warfare as an example of sophisticated expertise in action.Charting a major new direction in global governance at a moment when the international order is ready for change, this critically important book explains how we can harness expert knowledge to remake an unjust world.

Ousted from power by the French army on April 11, 2011, following the disputed presidential election in Côte d'Ivoire of November 2010, Laurent Gbagbo was charged with crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, on December 5, 2011.

This book, written from 2012 onwards, thanks to numerous prison visits and interviews, is the only one to have been produced with the participation of the Ivorian president during his incarceration and trial.
This unique testimony is more than ever a document for history, because it sheds light on the manipulations of the 2010 elections, the collusion between Nicolas Sarkozy's France and the ICC to get rid of Laurent Gbagbo, and the stalling tactics and maneuvers that marred "Gbagbogate."
Over meetings with François Mattei, Laurent Gbagbo looks back on his seven years in prison, explains what they mean and shares his vision for the future—that of a free man, come what may.
