Sinopsis

In the heart of 20th-century Argentina, a political movement emerged that would forever change the nation's destiny: Peronism. This book delves into the intricate relationship between Peronism and the Argentine working class, shedding light on the movement's origins, its impact on labor, the economy, and society, and its enduring legacy.

Juan Perón, a charismatic military leader, ascended to power in 1946, promising a new era of social justice and economic prosperity. Peronism quickly gained traction among the working class, who were drawn to its populist message and its emphasis on workers' rights. Perón implemented a series of policies that transformed Argentina, including the nationalization of key industries, the expansion of social welfare programs, and the creation of a powerful labor union movement.

However, Peronism also had a darker side. Perón's government suppressed political dissent and used violence and intimidation to maintain control. The movement's close ties to organized crime and its authoritarian tendencies alienated many Argentines, leading to Perón's eventual overthrow in 1955.

Despite his fall from power, Perón's legacy continued to haunt Argentina. The Peronist movement remained a potent force in Argentine politics, and Perón himself returned to power in 1973. His second presidency was marked by economic instability and political violence, culminating in a military coup in 1976.

The military dictatorship that followed unleashed a wave of terror on Argentina, targeting suspected Peronists and other dissidents. Thousands of people were killed, disappeared, or tortured. The "Dirty War," as it became known, left a deep scar on the nation's psyche.

After the fall of the dictatorship in 1983, Peronism reemerged as a major political force. The Peronist Party has won several presidential elections since then, and its policies have continued to shape Argentina's economic, social, and political landscape.

This book offers a comprehensive analysis of this complex and controversial movement, drawing on a variety of sources, including archival documents, interviews, and scholarly research. It provides a deeper understanding of Peronism's impact on Argentine society and its enduring legacy.

These entrepreneurs and practitioners detail both the challenges and successes they've experienced in putting their ideas into practice, and they offer wise advice to administrators, policymakers, and educators who hope to adopt these approaches. Many of the approaches described in the book were driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the nation to rethink core tenets of schooling. Contributors find solutions in robust career and technical education and new staffing models. They champion best-fit environments achieved via school choice programs and variations in school size, from colossal, highly resourced school systems to microschools. And they highlight a range of alternative instructional models such as mastery-based learning, personalized instruction, and multimodal learning labs for math instruction. This collection offers a host of actionable solutions to help accommodate different learning needs.

This in-depth Civil War study examines two early Union victories that were instrumental in deciding the conflict’s ultimate outcome. Some historians argue that the Civil War was decided in February 1862 with the collapse of the Confederate defenses of Forts Henry and Donelson on the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers. This ambitious offensive opened the whole Tennessee Valley to Union invasion and control, effectively cutting the Confederacy in two. In domino fashion, the Confederates lost Nashville and central and western Tennessee. Memphis eventually fell, and the upper stretch of the Mississippi itself was brought under Union control. During this period, General Ulysses S. Grant came to prominence, putting him in place to lead the Union to victory. Where the South Lost the War is a major contribution to Civil war literature. Shedding light on an overlooked campaign and revising conventional judgments on key players and events, author Kendall D. Gott provides a detailed, incisive, and even controversial study of the operation’s events.

In the 17th century, in a Europe torn apart by wars, religious disputes, and superstitions, Johannes Kepler transformed a fragile life—marked by illness, precariousness, and family losses—into one of the most profound intellectual transformations in history. Between faith and method, between the intuition of a secret harmony and the discipline of Tycho Brahe's data, Kepler dismantled the 'perfect' sky of circles and constructed a new universe of ellipses, laws, and numbers that still underpin modern astronomy. This book traces his journey from his childhood in the 16th century to his lasting legacy, showing his lights and shadows, his obsessions, his fertile errors, and the battles—public and private—that ran through his work.
