    Deep sleep meditation with...

    Sara Dylan

In this audio listening experience, Sara Dylan will be leading you gently into a quiet meditation during a summer thunder storm. You are sheltering safely from the storm and looking about as the rain falls.
You can choose what else you see in your mind’s eye; you can look out at the rain as it falls and listen to the thunder, or past the rain into the landscape to visualise the lightning; you can turn your head and look around and along the street or road.

Why this works: The brain naturally craves sensory input. Rain produces a sound akin to white noise. The brain gets a tonic signal from white noise that decreases this need for sensory input, thus calming us down.

A 2016 study carried out by the Brighton and Sussex Medical School found that sounds from nature – including rainfall, babbling streams, and thunder – have a relaxing effect on our psyche, and also physically adjust the way our brains work, reducing our body's fight-or-flight instinct.

The thunder in this recording will be quite loud at the beginning and will grow more distant, quieter, and less frequent as the storm moves away. The rain will continue throughout the recording.
Storms with lightning and the resultant thunder rarely last more than 30 minutes, unless following storms move in, but we have applied artistic license in extending this effect for 60 and 120 minute versions of this audiobook to assist your achievement of deep sleep.

Gentle meditative music has been added to enhance your experience.

This deep sleep meditation has been designed as a sitting meditation to be used at any time of the day, but it works just as well when you are lying down.

    Relax and enjoy.

The Decisive No - Choose What...

    Ezra Tovell

Most people spend their lives perfecting the wrong things. They optimize productivity systems, fine-tune habits, and manage their schedules with impressive discipline — while leaving the decisions that truly determine their fate to inertia, social pressure, and chance. In The Decisive No, behavioral scientist and decision theorist Ezra Tovell argues that this is the defining mistake of modern life.
Drawing on more than a decade of research into long-term life trajectories, Tovell identifies a striking pattern: roughly 80 to 90 percent of a person's life satisfaction, financial standing, relationship quality, and health is shaped by approximately ten "root decisions" — whom we build a life with, how we earn a living, where we live, how we spend our best hours, whom we allow to influence us, and — crucially — what we say no to. Everything else matters far less than we think.
The Decisive No is a rigorous, deeply researched guide to identifying those root decisions and protecting them from the noise. Tovell weaves together behavioral economics, Stoic philosophy, positive psychology, and decision theory to challenge some of our most cherished assumptions about success, happiness, and the good life. Along the way, he draws on the research of Angela Duckworth, Daniel Gilbert, Philip Tetlock, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, and Viktor Frankl, as well as the real-life examples of people who radically redesigned their values and rebuilt their lives around what actually mattered.
The book dismantles the comfort trap — the widespread belief that ease, achievement, and accumulation lead to fulfillment — and replaces it with a more honest and demanding model. Meaningful lives are not built by saying yes to more. They are built by learning to refuse — distractions, borrowed values, wrong commitments, social pressure, and the internal pull toward the easiest path. The decisive no is not an act of deprivation; it is the mechanism by which a person protects what deserves their finite time, attention, and energy.
Through thirteen interconnected chapters, Tovell addresses the psychology of suffering and growth, the economics of attention, the myth of personal exceptionalism, the difference between values that build and values that erode, the hidden costs of passivity, and the clarifying power of mortality. He closes with a practical framework — the Root Decisions Method — offering readers a set of small, concrete rituals for keeping their deepest priorities alive in the reality of daily life.
For readers of Jordan Peterson and Greg McKeown, The Decisive No is an uncompromising and ultimately liberating guide to living with deliberate purpose. It does not promise that the right choices will be easy. It promises that they will be worth it.

The Five Ranks of Zen - Tozan's...

The great Japanese Zen master Hakuin exclaimed, "How priceless is the merit gained through the step-by-step practice of the Five Ranks of Master Tozan!" Hakuin here refers to a teaching created by the Chinese Buddhist master Dongshan, known in Japanese as Zen Master Tozan, which is honored and studied in both Soto and Rinzai schools of Zen and is a gem of the classical Zen tradition. The ranks serve as guides to a radical exploration of the experience of relative and absolute reality, the interpenetrating "Two Truths" of Mahayana Buddhism.

In The Five Ranks of Zen, American Zen teacher Shishin Wick offers an accessible entry point to each of the ranks, which Tozan created in two formulations: the first and better-known is the Five Ranks of the Relative and the Absolute; while the second set, called the Sequence of Merit, is an abbreviated form of the Ten Oxherding Pictures, a traditional formulation of the Zen spiritual journey. Wick presents multiple translations and offers commentary on the ranks' titles and on Tozan's renowned verses, as well as offering guidance on these teachings' application in contemporary life and Zen practice. He emphasizes that, to truly plumb the depths of Tozan's teachings, you must treat these teachings as Zen koans and make a thorough investigation using your entire body.

Do you have a special needs child or know someone who is? Room at the Table: Encouraging Stories from Special Needs Families is rooted in the 2 Samuel 9 account of King David, who extended kindness to Jonathon's disabled son, Mephibosheth, and granted him a seat at the king's table.
Author Stephanie Pavlantos, the mother of Matthew with cerebral palsy and Starr Ayers, the mother of Ashley with Down syndrome, co-authored the collection of real-life experiences from families, guardians, caregivers, and individuals with special needs. These stories of hardship, courage, and blessings will encourage, enlighten, and equip readers for ministry in their communities. Room at the Table also contains a light-hearted look at life through the eyes of these extraordinary individuals.
Stephanie and Starr's vision is to increase awareness of the impact of mental and physical disabilities on families and caregivers. They aspire to promote understanding, diminish fears, and provide suggestions for ways people who know and love special needs individuals and families can minister to them.
Those with special needs are compassionate individuals who love freely and desire love in return. There is no need to fear them or allow their disabilities to intimidate you. As people made in God's image, their wants and needs are the same as yours and mine.
We are all children of God with special needs. Only Jesus knows the battles we have fought and won or lost, or the ones we are still fighting. When life or insensitive people hurt, wound, or leave us bitter, Jesus is the One who heals, loves, and restores us.
Room at the Table: Encouraging Stories from Special Needs Families will inspire and instill in you a greater desire to show the kindness of God to "one of the least of these." (Matthew 25:40 NIV). Whether you shed tears or laugh out loud, these stories will touch your heart.
