Summary

Journey through the captivating history of Russian aviation, from its humble beginnings to its status as a global powerhouse.

In this comprehensive and engaging narrative, we delve into the remarkable feats of Russian aviators, from the early pioneers who took to the skies in rickety aircraft to the cosmonauts who ventured into the vastness of space. We witness the birth of the Soviet aviation industry, a colossus that produced countless aircraft, both for military and civilian use, and played a pivotal role in the nation's victory in World War II. We trace the development of iconic aircraft such as the MiG fighter jets, the Tupolev bombers, and the Antonov cargo planes, marvels of engineering that showcased the ingenuity and determination of Soviet engineers.

Beyond the realm of military and technological achievements, we explore the profound impact that aviation has had on Russian culture and society. We trace the representation of aviation in literature, art, and film, and examine the ways in which it has shaped Russian identity and aspirations. We also investigate the challenges and opportunities that Russian aviation faces in the 21st century, from the need for modernization and innovation to the imperative of sustainability in an era of climate change.

With vivid storytelling and meticulous research, this book brings to life the extraordinary stories of Russian aviators, engineers, and visionaries who have shaped the course of aviation history. It is a testament to the human spirit of innovation, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of the skies.

On the ground, in the air, and behind the lines, grunts made life-and-death decisions every day—and endured the worst stress of their young lives.

It was the tumultuous year 1968, and Robert Tonsetic was Rifle Company commander of the 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry in Vietnam. He took over a group of grunts demoralized by defeat but determined to get even. Through the legendary Tet and May Offensives, he led, trained, and risked his life with these brave men, and this is the thrilling, brutal, and honest story of his tour of duty. Tonsetic tells of leading a seriously undermanned ready-reaction force into a fierce, three-day battle with a ruthless enemy battalion; conducting surreal night airmobile assaults and treks through fetid, pitch-black jungles; and relieving combat stress by fishing with hand grenades and taking secret joyrides in Hueys.

During that fateful year, as unrest erupted at home and politicians groped for a way out of the war, Tonsetic and his men did their job as soldiers and earned the title "Warriors."

Equal parts personal testament, structural interrogation, and social criticism, Reagan Jackson’s Still True inspires in its singularity. Jackson writes with a powerful sense of history and a wide-ranging vision, capturing a Seattle in flux, where processes of inequality, gentrification, and police violence occur alongside community struggle, vivid resistance, and countless episodes of joy. The true crime story of the kidnapping, rape, and murder of a Missouri teen and her family’s journey to justice. In the early hours of March 22, 1989, two friends—career criminals with violent felony convictions—drove around the eastern Kansas City area in a stolen car committing a series of crimes. The weather was mild for late March in Kansas City; the sky was clear, and there was the pale remnant of a Full Moon that bore the dubious name of Death Moon, the last full moon of winter. A little before 7 a.m., fifteen-year-old Ann Harrison walked to the end of her driveway on Kansas City’s east side to wait for the bus to take her to Raytown South High School. Ten minutes later, she disappeared but no one saw what happened. As if waiting for her return, her belongings were still stacked carefully by the side of the road.By the Side of the Road is the true crime story of the kidnapping, rape, and murder of Ann Harrison and the long journey forced upon her family who had to wait nearly three decades to see her killers brought to final justice.

It is widely accepted that political discourse in recent years has become more openly racist and more accepting of wildly implausible conspiracy theories. Dogwhistles and Figleaves explores ways in which such changes—both of which defied previously settled norms of political speech—have been brought about. Jennifer Saul shows that two linguistic devices, dogwhistles and figleaves, have played a crucial role. Some dogwhistles (such as "88", used by Nazis online to mean "Heil Hitler") serve to disguise messages that would otherwise be rejected as unacceptable, allowing them to be transmitted surreptitiously. Other dogwhistles (like the 1988 "Willie Horton" ad) work by influencing people in ways that they are not aware of, and which they would likely reject were they aware. Figleaves (such as "just asking questions") take messages that could easily be recognized as unacceptable, and provide just enough cover that people become more willing to accept them. Saul argues that these devices are important for the spread of racist discourse. She also shows how they contribute to the transmission of norm-violating discourse more generally, focusing on the case of wildly implausible conspiracist speech. This book is the first full-length exploration of dogwhistles and figleaves. It offers an illuminating and disturbing view of the workings of contemporary political discourse.
