Summary

Semiotics, the study of signs and symbols, is a vast and complex field that has become increasingly influential in a wide range of disciplines in recent decades. One of the most important and controversial topics in semiotics is the question of interpretation: How do we interpret signs and symbols? What are the limits of interpretation? And what are the dangers of overinterpretation?

This book offers a new approach to interpretation, called deconstructive field theory. Deconstructive field theory is based on the idea that all interpretations are partial and incomplete, and that there is no such thing as a single, definitive interpretation of a text. Instead, every interpretation is a product of the particular context in which it is produced.

The context of an interpretation includes the reader's own experiences, beliefs, and values, as well as the historical and cultural context in which the text was produced. Deconstructive field theory argues that these factors all play a role in shaping the way that we interpret texts, and that there is no way to eliminate their influence.

However, deconstructive field theory does not argue that all interpretations are equally valid. Some interpretations are more plausible and convincing than others, and some are more useful for understanding a text. The goal of deconstructive field theory is to help readers develop more sophisticated and nuanced interpretations of texts, and to avoid the dangers of overinterpretation.

This book is intended for students and scholars of semiotics, as well as for anyone who is interested in the study of interpretation. It is written in a clear and accessible style, and it is full of examples from literature, film, and popular culture.

We hope that this book will help you to understand the complex and fascinating world of semiotics, and to see the world around you in a new light.

Avoid inadvertently offending or alienating anyone by following six straightforward communication guidelines developed by a no-nonsense linguistic anthropologist and business consultant.

In today's fast-moving and combative culture, language can feel like a minefield. Terms around gender, disability, race, sexuality and more are constantly evolving. Words that used to be acceptable can now get you "cancelled." People are afraid of making embarrassing mistakes. Or sounding outdated or out of touch. Or not being as respectful as they intended.

But it's not as complicated as it might seem. Linguistic anthropologist Suzanne Wertheim offers six easy-to-understand principles to guide any communication-written or spoken-with anyone:

    - Reflect reality
    - Show respect
    - Draw people in
    - Incorporate other perspectives
    - Prevent erasure
    - Recognize pain points

This guide clarifies the challenges-and the solutions-to using "they/them," and demonstrates why "you guys" isn't as inclusive as many people think. If you follow the principles, you'll know not to ask a female coworker with a wedding ring about her husband-because she might be married to a woman. And you'll avoid writing things like "America was discovered in 1492," because that's just when Europeans found it.

Filled with real-world examples, high-impact word substitutions, and exercises that boost new skills, this book builds a foundational toolkit so people can evaluate what is and isn't inclusive language on their own.

Ancient images can feel distant—formal, silent, as if speaking an unknown language. And yet, they were designed to communicate with absolute clarity.
Why is the pharaoh always larger? Why do figures appear flat, shown in strict profile? Why do certain symbols repeat with such insistence? Why do temples, tombs, and palaces take the shapes they do?
These aren't accidents. They're choices—visual strategies born from what these cultures valued most: power, order, memory, the divine.
This book turns ancient art into a readable language.
You'll learn simple, practical tools to "read" any artwork—by noticing patterns like hierarchy, repetition, color, and framing, and by connecting those choices to the stories they were meant to tell. Each work becomes a narrative: of kings who needed to appear eternal, of gods who demanded visibility, of societies that encoded their entire worldview into stone and pigment.
The journey is chronological, from prehistoric caves to the Bronze Age worlds of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Crete, and Mycenae. Every chapter focuses on key works and monuments, training your eye through clear explanations and a repeatable method.
By the end of this volume, you won't have memorized dates and names. You'll have acquired a method—a way of looking that transforms any image, ancient or modern, into a text you can read.
This skill matters more than ever. In a world flooded with images—from social media to advertising and news—learning ancient visual codes sharpens how we decode what we see today.

Oscar Wildes essay about the benefits of socialism, how it would change the face of society, and bring peace by erasing the concept of private property. In his unique manner, he sticks his finger into the very pain points of the English society of his time, which might remind of some, we find in the society of today as well. Leaving no doubt of how much he despised being rich; almost as much as he despised being poor.

“Much alarm has been raised among Establishment media and politicians about President Trump’s efforts to cut the federal bureaucracy and to force its top officials to be more loyal to him and to those who voted for him. How did we come to find ourselves in a situation where our top national administrators – who exercise immense governing power in our country – think of themselves as independent of the elected president? Why does it create alarm among our elites when the president expects those running the administrative state to carry out his political program? The roots of this entitled attitude go back many decades, and are part of the original Progressive project to comprehensively reshape American government. We are now in the midst of the first serious effort since the 1930s to restore some measure of democratic accountability to national administration. In this Provocation, Ronald J. Pestritto explains how we got to this moment, and what the prospects are for the current effort to turn things around.”
